Product Description

CHOKING HAZARD - Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs.

LEGO Architecture Empire State Building. Completed in 1931 during the height of the Great Depression, the Empire State Building was the world's tallest building in the world until 1972 when the World Trade Center opened. Voted one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Empire Stat Building is an Art Deco skyscraper and is considered the symbol of American skyscrapers. This golden LEGO model, co-developed and designed by Adam Reed Tucker, celebrates the early age of skyscraper design.

To be able to understand why LEGO has been successful for so long, just look to the name. LEGO originally got its name from founder Ole Kirk Christiansen who combed the Danish words "Leg Got" which means "play well". He later realized that LEGO in Latin translates to "I put together." The LEGO set became a standard of creative play for children worldwide, unlocking the creativity to build vehicles, buildings, cities and more. Historians point to the invention of the wheel as a major turning point in world history. The invention of the LEGO wheel had the same monumental effect in the history of LEGO, making it possible to create cars, trucks and eventually the LEGO train building set that is one of the most successful LEGO sets of all time. LEGO currently produces about 20 billion LEGO bricks a year and has sold over 400 billion LEGOs in their history -- enough for every person on the planet to have over 60 LEGOs each!

I purchased this set at the LEGO store in Kansas City. I have had my eye on this set for quite some time, and finally got the opportunity to purchase it. I happily traveled back to the hotel with it in hand, anticipating the stimulating build ahead of me. I opened the box, and remarked, " The packaging is really nice..." which it was. I built the set, and stood back and looked at the rather small building. I liked it. And then I remembered the 20 dollars I had spent on it. And I was rather dissatisfied. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love this set, and recommend buying it.. But for $20.00, it is rather lacking in stature with it's mere 77 pieces. If I were to order the same pieces off of pick-a-brick, it would most likely cost me around $10, not including shipping. The building can be partially disassembled into three chunks that fit into the really nice box, great for transport or storage, although I don't know why you'd need to do the former. The packaging is overdone, and I think this adds in to the price. You would almost think you were unboxing a piece of electronics. I did enjoy that LEGO included with the instructions list of facts about the empire state building. Who knew that the observation deck was intended to moor airships? As for the construction of the building, it is very solid until the last 1x2 brick at the top, which tends to become crooked and/or fall off. Overall, I love this set and am glad I purchased it. It makes a great introduction to the Architecture theme, and while it was not in the least challenging to build, it was very relaxing and almost therapeutic.

The set is easy to build and not too difficult for younger ages (i.e., 6-10) like some Lego Architecture sets can be (Falling Water and the White House). And the price is easier to handle. However, after finishing, there are dimensions of the building just missing. Some lines are missing (the model is simpler than the building itself), probably to make the set more simplistic and thus cheaper to purchase. But it is a letdown to get such a difference between the building and the model. If looking for a set, would pay a little more and get the White House or Guggenheim models (but which are not the best sets for young builders).

Comments about Lego 1001617 LEGO Architecture Empire State Building (21002):

I purchased this set on clearance at a big retailer. Had it been full price, I would not have purchased it because, quite honestly, it seemed like a lot of money for 77 bricks. The build went quickly and easily, taking about 30 minutes, and truly does look great when finished. Like most of the architecture sets, it uses the SNOT system (Studs Not On Top) so everything is smooth and clean looking. Instructions were clear and as always contain lots of information about the building. A good little build, but definitely not worth full price. Enjoy, and happy building!

Perhaps the weakest Architecture set.

Comments about Lego 1001617 LEGO Architecture Empire State Building (21002):

Although I wasn't expecting much from this set (I could see a lack of detail from the box), the price was fair and worth the money. I have 6 other Architecture sets and this was by far the easiest build. I have been to the Empire State Building in person and there really isn't that much detail to the building, I do however think they should have added the observatory deck in the set for a more detailed build. Nonetheless, it sits nicely on my shelf with the others. All my friends say it looks fresh.

This is a very nice little building and the build was very easy and I like all the brown pieces that are part of the building I have to say this would make a great office piece for anyone who likes iconic buildings. This is my first building I got as a early Christmas present and this is my first Lego Architecture set and it might not be my last because after building this I might start collecting more.

As with other Lego products of this series the pieces are well made and join together easily. When finished the building stands tall and firm. I especially like the attention to detail of the building.

                  Low detail, repetitive

Comments about Lego 1001617 LEGO Architecture Empire State Building (21002):

The Empire State building is an iconic piece of architecture that, while obviously having a distinctive form to it, also has a lot of small and important details that distinguish it not only from the other Manhattan structures but also are historically significant in terms of the architecture of the period. This model captures very little of it. If you're looking for a paperweight that kind of resembles the building and you want to be able to assemble it in 30 minutes, sure, this is for you. For me, though, every aspect of this model was generally repetitive, visually uninteresting, and fundamentally disappointing to the whole point of the original building - which was supposed to be a grandiose, detailed, and somewhat arrogant monument to the US economy and steel industry. This is an underwhelming model that is both more expensive and less detailed than an equivalent facsimile purchased at a tourist shop in Manhattan. I hate to be so critical, because I love LEGO and I love the architecture line, but I'd start somewhere else if you want to begin your collection, and unless you have a real interest in this building I'd probably leave it out altogether.
