I bought this after reading the other reviews. There is a white plastic strip that is attached to the packaging - it slides out of a slit on the back of the phone when it is removed from the package. When it is out the volume goes down to barely audible. Following another reviewer's advice, I snipped off the plastic from the package and reinserted it and cut if off flush with the toy, and covered with tape. I also made sure to keep the extra leftover plastic strip to replace it if it if the piece I left in gets lost.This brought the volume back to the original level.** I should note here that my son is older with autism and knows not to put the plastic or tape in his mouth. I personally would not do this if the toy was for a child who may put the tape or plastic in their mouth if the tape came loose.**

We tried taping in the little white tag to avoid the low sound problem, but after lots and lots of play it fell out and was lost. This toy needs to be fixed. Raise the volume to the display volume, and let me decide whether it is too loud for my kid by either buying it or not. My son loves all things Thomas, including this phone. But now he is frustrated because it's not loud enough.

It is fun and the child enjoyed it -- but as soon as the sound tab was removed it was too quiet and was no longer a favorite because it was hard to hear!

This toy looks interesting to little thomas lovers however the volume is too low. Thought it was a defect at first, but if you read the insert it states for safety the volume lowers once removed from the box. I just cut the tab that was inserted when in the box and taped it in the slot so the volume stays loud enough. With the volume problem resolved it's an average toy, but nothing spectacular.

We had the same problem with the sound as everyone else. When you take the toy out of the package, there's a white tab that you have to pull out of the back of the toy. If you stick it back in the slot, the sound is loud again. We cut the paper tab off short & stuck the end back into the toy. My boy played with it all evening, so I am going to add a piece of tape to it tomorrow to make sure the tab doesn't fall out. Problem solved!

You can not hear this at all! What a waste of money. My son doesn't even play with it! Do not buy! This product should be recalled.

Loved this item in the store. Once you remove the demo strip from the toy, however, the volume goes down...WAY DOWN! It informs you of this on the package but this volume is so low it is ridiculous. My husband stuck the demo strip back in and rigged it to stay in the demo mode which is loud but atleast audible.

We bought this for my 20 month old who is a huge Thomas fan. He loves to press buttons and went crazy over the sounds it made in the store. But when we took it out of the box on Christmas morning, the sound automatically lowered to a level so faint we thought it was broken. Turns out you have to hold it against your ear to hear anything, making it pretty difficult for a toddler to press the buttons at the same time. He immediately handed it back and hasn't looked at it since. My husband is going to try sticking the tab from the box into the slot on the phone and taping it up so it plays louder like it did in the store because my son really did love it that way. If that doesn't work, we're returning it.

I purchased this phone for my 18 month old son. I saw it in the store, pressed some buttons, and liked what I heard. However, once I took it out of the package, the sound was faint. Turns out the paperwork inside the package has a disclaimer stating the volume will go down once it is taken out of the package to meet safety standards and protect the hearing of little ones. Would have preferred to have a volume switch or perhaps place the speaker on the side of the phone instead of the back where it is muted by little hands holding the phone.
