I bought The pink Leapster Explorer for my daughter for this Christmas.. It was good thing I opened it to see give it a test run before I actually wrapped it. IF YOU ARE GIVING A CHILD THIS FOR A PRESENT, I HIGHLY suggest you get it started for them before hand. because it will take HOURS to get it up and running.
First, you have to install the "quick start " Cd into your home computer, ( which takes about 5 mins) then you have to follow directions from what " quick start set up cd" tells you ...( this process takes about an hour, because the leapster had to UPDATE INTO your computer" so you have to wait for the updates before you can set up your LEAPSTER EXPLORER game system.. then you will be promted to to connect your USB from your system to the computer and fill out your child name on the LEAPSTER EXPLORER , and once you do all of that, then you're ready to go... CAN YOU IMAGINE giving your child this with updating it first ? they would have to sit through hours waiting for the configurations before they can play with their toy.. so again, i HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU OPEN IT AND DO THE PROPER SET UP before giving it to you're child.

because without doing the QUICK START installation, your child will only be able to play games, from the cartridge, and won't be able to use E BOOKS and play the downloadble games.. just remember patience, because it does take a while. other than the waiting .. and after the waiting for installtion.. it's a pretty good product =)

Apparently I got a bad one. I bought this back in August for my daughter's b-day (11.29.10). Her party was just this past Sunday (11.28.10) and she got it as a gift....Read complete review

Apparently I got a bad one. I bought this back in August for my daughter's b-day (11.29.10). Her party was just this past Sunday (11.28.10) and she got it as a gift. She's loves it but it keeps freezing, shutting off by itself, jerky movements and sound and some of the buttons are constantly getting stuck ("home" button, and "left" button). Half the time, the stylus won't respond to anything at all.She just turned 4 and doesn't immediately understand when it's the game that's causing problems and then she gets upset.I've tried all the tips on the leapfrog site (new batteries, calibrating, etc...) and it doesn't make a difference.[...] Leapfrog is no help either. I'm so ticked!Anyway, word of advice...don't buy your kids gifts if they won't be getting them for further than 90 days out!

I love the product, and so does my daughter. She just turned four. I just wish it would come with the adapter and rechargeable batteries, but I guess that is just another ploy to make you spend money since it's sold separately. Regular batteries die within two days of the child playing it. All in all, I do like it.

My 4yr old daughter loves her Leapster! She has had it since June 2011. It was working great. My only problem is that now the sound only works if we plug in headphones.. which for most parents is a blessing :). I just wish that it would work without it. Unsure why it went out- everything else works fine. She still loves using it headphones and all.

Parents please note that after your child runs out of shampoo, etc for her pet- it will direct her to ask her parents to go online and buy more. I really don't care for the tatics to get us to buy more items online..but what else is new :)

I have a 6 year old daughter who has trouble with a short attention span from having brain surgery when she was younger. But with the Leapster, she will play it for hours on end. The only downside is I wish it would have included a better selection of included programs, but add on programs are not that expensive and I understand it's where they make their money. For the price, I really cannot complain. It was easy to set up by connecting it to my computer, and from reading the reviews I knew to do this a head of time before we gave it to her so she could play with it right away. It only took maybe 10 minutes to set up, most of the time was deciding what programs to put on it with the included download card.

I am not very computer savvy, and I don't have much time to spend on the computer, so I don't have much use for the parent updates LeapFrog sends to my email account. I meant it simply as a "video game" with educational qualities that my daughter could entertain herself with.

Pros: Color is actually more lavender than pink, My daughter loves playing games on it, The sound is adjustable, She can practice WRITING her letters rather than just identify them!

Cons: Extra games are pricey, It seems like my daughter has gone through all the games rather quickly (I will have to play on it when I get a chance and make sure she really knows how to use it), Needs extra parental guidance

I bought the leapster explorer for my daughter because my sister bought the leapster for her kids and they LOVED them. What I really like about this item is it teaches through play. She thinks she's playing a video game.I also like that there are different learning games with all the characters kids love like spongebob. I like everything about this game system but would like to see the price come down.

Bought this for my 2yearheart old for x-mas. She loved it played it for a couple months. Then the batteries stopped put new batteries in and wouldn't work. Plugged it in and still won't work. She is three so going to look at a ds instead. I know that will keep working.
