Terrible, Shameful Product

About Me Chess Computer Collector

Pros

    Cons

    • Poor Quality

Comments about Pavilion Games: Talking Electronic Chess Game:

I am a collector of dedicated chess computers and really wanted this product to work (despite the almost useless non-magnetic pieces it comes with... I just use my own).

My first unit was bought at the local ToysRUs. I tried playing around 10 games at various levels with it but could not complete a single one due to the computer locking up/crashing each time in under 25 moves. Thinking that I just got a defective unit, I exchanged the computer for another one at the same store. It had exactly the same problem. This product is complete junk. It's a shame, because the computer is not a weak player; in fact, it has an H8 Risc-style processor clocking at 10 MHz and a 32 KB program.

Comments about Pavilion Games: Talking Electronic Chess Game:

The only negative is the lack of magnetic pieces. The game plays well, instructions are brief but accurate, and is great for teaching my 7 year old the game. There are plenty of levels to challenge most people. Lack of magnets makes the pieces topple easily, but you get the knack of preventing this quickly. Do not press sure hard on the board to register moves. Overall based on the options out there, and the cost, Highly recommended.

      AWFUL

      By TeacherJennyMac

      from Modesto CA

Comments about Pavilion Games: Talking Electronic Chess Game:

Did not contain instructions and is not easy to figure out. The pieces are small and plastic- not magnetic. You can not understand the electronic voice. Better to get a $5 chess set and look up help on-line. Hoping they will accept it as a return!

Comments about Pavilion Games: Talking Electronic Chess Game:

This product has no magnetic pieces as advertised. I exchanged it and the replacement had the same problem. Without magnets, the pieces are so light that games are destroyed practically by breathing on the board. The electronic voice is unintelligible. Clearly a case of false advertising.

        Don't buy!

        By J.A.

        from Austin, TX

Comments about Pavilion Games: Talking Electronic Chess Game:

I should have paid attention to the two one-star reviews before I bought this. No, the pieces are not magnetic, and worse, the instructions are horrible. Plus, I put brand new, out-of-the-box batteries in the board, and TWICE it shorted out while I was playing, aborting the game. I am returning it to the store.

product did not contain magnetized pieces. they were just hollowed out plastic. I will take it back and try again. I wonder if this was a restocked returned item.

I teach my family and friends chess with it. I love the many easy levels there are for beginners. I wish it had an AC adaptor. I would like to know how many hours of play I can get from a fresh set of batteries. As soon as the store at Montebello gets more in, I intend to buy 4 more.

It's great that the Chess pieces have a little compartment right under the chess board. My 5 year loves it and hasn't lost any pieces like other Chess games.
