This product does work well if you use it properly. First off, about the leak: There is an emergency drain hole in the lower body of it, it's under the "corner" of the L shaped filter tray. This is a LIFE SAVING safety feature; without it, if the tank started at full and drained for too long water could eventually spill over into the fan compartment and possibly get to the motor. Powered electric motor + water = fiery electrocution nastiness. The user instructions do specifically say to empty the unit when not in use. Follow this RELIGIOUSLY; don't just leave the unit with water all day after you turn it off, and also have it sit in a tray (maybe a cookie baking tray with a 1/2" rim) as a backup and you should be fine. It is designed to constantly drain at a slow rate when the tank is in, and when the fan is on the wicking into the filter consumes most of that leak. If it's off...there's no consumption of water, it just builds up and eventually drains. For the noise: The fan has a very tight tolerance gap to the lower part of the plastic body. When it's on you could push up in certain spots lightly with your thumb and make the fan contact, making the repetitive clacking sound. The four formed "legs" of the base are designed to take the weight, but make sure whatever surface you put this thing on is PERFECTLY SOLID and will not flex in any way, otherwise the bottom of the unit may flex enough to have the fan contact and get noisy.I got this for my rather sick son who had a bad virus and infection and couldn't breathe properly at night. It does work well, so keep the above tips in mind and it should work fine.

We purchased this for my daughter to use in her room. My daughter and I were actually pretty excited to set it up and turn the "stars" on. It worked well the first week or so. Then the stars/light stopped working. I exchanged it at BRU for a new one. Fortunately, the exchange/return policy was okay. The second one poured water out of the bottom and all over the carpet after two nights of use. I had use the carpet shampooer to suction the water, clean the carpet, and use a big fan to dry it as well. It took awhile to dry too for some reason. We thought we would try getting a new one, one more time. We exchanged it for a THIRD one. We didn't use it right away, as we didn't need it. The first time we went to use it, it leaked and did the same thing as the last time...poured water all over the carpet. It ended up being the little stick that springs up and down in the bottom of the tank that allows the water to drip to the bottom and then be "humidified" into the room that was culprit. It would just push up and stay up. The only "pros" were:nice lights/stars with rotating colorswater lasted all night and then some..probably 1.5 nights worth. If you look at the manual you are supposed to refill with fresh water daily anyways. We ended up bucking up and spending the money on the Vicks Pure Mist Humidifier that is the Tower Humidifier and have LOVED it. We used this in a 13x15 room and 11x13 room with no problem with humidification. If this wouldn't have been so faulty or if VICKS could fix that one problem with the tank, I would recommend this and still own it.

awesome but scary

This humidifer is amazing, super quiet and easy to use. The night light feature is a huge bonus. The only this is i have never seen any this scarier than when the light turns red. Why red!? The room is super dark compared to the rest of the colours and looks like something out of insidious! But other than that its perfect!

I am happy with the humidifier that I purchased, it works great for at night when I have to have our heaters on high for heat. Works in keeping the air moist for my babies to sleep.

Love this humidifier! We bought this for our 1 year old because she gets stuffy in the winter. It came in handy when she recently got sick with a bad cold. Kept her breathing better throughout the night. The low setting is extremely quiet and I like the idea of the 'invisible' mist. It also has a moisture sensing feature which works great. Our moisture level reaches about 51% humidity before it levels out. The Vicks scent pads worked great during her congestion too. We do change the filter monthly and clean the unit according to manufacturer's instructions. It's a bit of work, but I feel it's worth it.
Filter terrible, lights are fab

I used it for a month or so almost every night, cleaning the filter once per week. Filter pretty much disintegrated. Got a replacement one, same thing happened, tried cleaning more often, but it just had an ever present smell that was so yucky. They don't sell replacement filters ( i really don't know why, because this filter is the worst I've ever seen). All that to say, i had to get rid of the filter, and all I'm left with is pretty projecting moon and stars. Not what i expected, and will never buy another vicks humidifier again.

We have used this product for almost 2 years, it has worked great. Even made a move with us into a new house and is still going strong. Looking to get a second one, now that my daughters are in seperate rooms. The water lasts about 1.5-2 days. I replace the water reguarly, I also use a water purifier thingy you just drop in tank when filling. And I clean the filter as often as I think it needs it, (once every week or two) and replace when it stops cleaning up nicley. We need one in our Living Room and I am going to get this one, even though we dont need star lights, just cause I'm so happy with the first one I bought!

Worked decent for about a week, then began to stink like musky water. Changed the filter and was better. Then after another week the fan began to make noises and was loud.

The steam only flows down. One would think that if they were to design a quality product and charging as much as they are for it, that you would be able to direct the flow of steam. I am going to have to build a shelf if I want my son to be able to benefit from this product. It got a great rating, but I do not see why. The star display on the ceiling is lame too. Could have done a way better job desigining this product.
