The Protect by Munchkin Auto-Close Safety Gate has a unique gravity-fed hinge that automatically closes the gate 100% of the time because sometimes you even forget to close the garage door. Double locking mechanism on handle is easy for adults to use, but difficult for toddlers and young children. U-shaped steel powerframe keeps gate securely in place while an extra wide walkthrough allows for easy in and out access. The gate is approved for use at top of stairs, bottom of stairs, and between rooms for maximum versatility. This pressure fit gate also includes hardware for extra safety. Gate is 29.5" tall and fits openings up to 37.5" wide (includes 2 extensions). Gate is capable of expanding to 54" with additional extensions. Suitable for use with children from 6 months up to 24 months of age.

Pros+ Automatic closing system works extremely well+ Feels very sturdy even with extensions+ Gate release mechanism is secure yet simple to use.+ Comes with both pressure mount and screw in mounts+ Gate opens in both directions (in & out)Cons- Lower cross bar can be a tripping hazard - Installation can be tricky if not thought throughInstallationThe instructions that come with gate are simple to follow. However, I think the list of tools for installation should also include a rubber mallet or a hammer. As other reviewers have pointed out removing the lower plastic plugs can be difficult. The way I removed the plugs was to pry out the plugs with a flat head screw driver just a little (as shown in the instructions). I then removed the plug by positioning the head of the screw driver under the exposed lip of the plug and gently tapped it with a rubber mallet (similar motion to chiseling wood). Be sure to use a wide flat head screw driver and tap, don't hammer. My plugs refused to come out only by prying but popped out with little effort when using the screwdriver/mallet method. I also used the rubber mallet to install the extension bars onto the extension plugs. The rest of the installation took all of 5 minutes.UseThe auto close feature of this gate is terrific. The simplicity of the design makes it pretty much fool proof. The latch mechanism is also excellent. Simply unlatch with your thumb, lift, and push or pull. The amount of force to open the gate is mildly stiff but any adult should be able to easily operate this gate. When allowed to slam this gate is quite noisey. If your child is extremely sensitive to noise when sleeping this gate is nearly impossible to close completely silently but the noise is minimal with a little effort. The mounting system and gate feels very solid. Even as an adult I find that yanking on it creates very little flex.

My wife purchased three of these gates. The assembly process requires you to remove four plugs from the corners of the gate, the top two are not an issue, but the bottom two are not the same story. With some prying I was able to the the plugs out of two of the three, but was not able to remove the plugs from the third. Even spraying WD-40 on the plugs was not enough to get them out. It strikes me as odd that these plugs are even located in the gate when you open the box anyways as they could be packaged with the rest of the assembly items. If the manufacturer insists on including them in the gate for shipment, the plug should at least be modified so you can get enough leverage to pull them out. For [$] it should be pretty easy to get together. Can't recommend due to the hassle of assembly.

Keeping it because it's safe but not a fan

We needed a gate for the top of the stairs because our son is a bit of a dare devil (11 months old). This gate was very highly rated for its safety features. However, it was a pain to install (screws into the wall so now we'll have to patch holes & repaint when we remove these gates) & it's so LOUD when the gate closes. It's like a loud thud which isn't what I want my baby to wake up to late at night when I'm headed to bed (it did at first because it was a new sound but I think he's used to it now). It'd be great if they could design the latching system to be quieter.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
I am going to buy two more!

Better than the baby gates that you have to take down. This is perfect if you have animals also! Very sturdy. Super easy to install.
Best gate out there

I am so happy with this gate. I've used other baby gates that I hated at other people's houses. This is awesome. I like that the gate door swings both ways. The auto-close is nice. If I want it to stay open, I prop something in front of the gate or use some cord. I also like that I didn't have to screw it into my wall and it's still stable.
Love this gate!

I have two of these gates in my home and bought another for our cottage. I like that it closes on its own.

Pressure mounted with a door!
Most gates with doors have to be screwed in. That's not a great option for renters like us. Pressure mounting has no damage and the door makes it super convenient.
