Description



The Mill Pond, by Maxfield Parrish. The most popular American artist of his day, Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) began his paintings with minute attention to the appearance and behavior of real things - shadows, trees, mountains, clouds - and added effects that came straight from his formidable imagination. He created hyper realistic worlds that can be briefly entered and savored: you can almost smell the snow on his distant peaks, feel the pine duff underfoot in his forests, hear the chirps of high summer in his skies.

Parrish's images graced advertisements for everything from lightbulbs to bicycles, and at one time a Parrish art print hung in one of every four American homes. As treasured today as they were in his lifetime, Maxfield Parrish's paintings remain among the most beloved works of any American artist.
