The Protect by Munchkin Extender Extra Tall & Wide Safety Gate is an extending safety gate that offers the added safety of extra height and the added convenience of extra width because theres always a place for tall, wide, and handsome in your home. Double locking mechanism on handle is easy for adults to use, but difficult for toddlers and young children. Unlike some other extending gates, the Extender Safety Gate has no unsightly adjustment holes along its sturdy steel frame. The gate is approved for use at top of stairs, bottom of stairs, and between rooms for maximum versatility. This hardware mounted gate features a quick release latch so the gate can be easily removed when you have company over. The gate is 36" tall mounted and fits openings up to 56" wide. Suitable for use with children from 6 months up to 24 months of age.

I read SOooo many gate reviews before purchasing this gate, and all of them had both excellent and very negative reviews; I had to spend a lot of time reading between the lines. My experience with this gate has been quite good so far. Some complained about 'poor' directions; I had no problem following them, but they are picture-only directions, so can be 'read' by speakers of any language. Not super simple to install, but not particularly difficult if you are handy and experienced with hanging shelves, building boxed furniture, etc. It is true, what others said, about the enclosed anchors being inadequate; I wouldn't even install a stationary shelf with those anchors, let alone something that moves and gets pulled on. However, I also wouldn't install ANY gate directly into sheet-rock with ANY type of anchor; a gate needs to be installed into something solid such as wood. What I like about this gate is: 1)it is hardware mounted, so it is more secure and there is no pressure rod to trip over,(both very important for top of stairs installation), 2)is easily removable in case you don't want it up all the time, 3)simple basic design blends in with our staircase. I also like that you can choose whether to have it swing only one way, or both ways. Yes, the latch is a bit tough to work until you get used to it (requires a tug), but I prefer the security of this latch to an easy one that could give way with a good shake from a strong toddler. All in all, I would say this is a good value for the $.

Sturdy and pretty good looking. The other reviews are right, the mounting screws are inadequate. I am on our second set of anchors and screws in two weeks. It pulled out of the wall on the original screws and anchors after 24 hours. I highly suggest larger screws and mounting it into a stud. I'm going to try toggle bolts because two sets of plastic anchors in increasing sizes aren't working. Otherwise, I like this thing a lot.

          we got 2 to block the stairs at the top and bottom since our boy started crawling.. you have to make sure you install into the studs in the wall because we missed it the first time and ripped holes in the wall, they're that heavy.. but they can be sturdy.. you don't need very many tools and a template is included in the box for where you need to put the screws.. i loved that.. we are pleased with the gates..

            Would have been perfect gate since we have an extra large opening before the stairs at our home, but it was designed poorly and the adjustments were too specific for the doorway. We were unable to hook it so that it would fit. We ended up having to go with a wooden gate instead that folded in the middle. Would not recommend this gate, very hard to install in odd width doorways.

              We use this gate at the top of our stairs for our 1 year old! It does a great job of keeping her safe from the stairs. Durable, good quality and looks nice. Gate is easy to open and close. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because it wasn't super quick and easy to install, but this could have just been out house. I would definitely recommdbd

              I currently have two of these gates up, and have to chuckle at the other reviews that say it's a piece of junk or hard to install. Follow the directions, use common sense and the right tools and you should be fine.
              Also, for those who hate it, find another gate that will extend to 56" that's better and I'll buy it. There aren't any! I'll be getting a third for the top of our stairs, but the two I have on the main level now work just fine, exactly as advertised. :D

                The instructions are incorrect... I've worked over 4 hours trying to install this gate. As soon as the store opes in the morning its going back. 60+ dollars for a piece of JUNK. I do NOT EVER EVER EVER recommend buying this gate, esp if your a busy mom

                    Installed this gate to keep Boston terrier dogs/pups in a confined area. The height is perfect since these dogs are jumpers. The wall anchors and screws are inadequate for the type and weight of the gate. However, after using longer anchors and longer screws....no more surprise unwanted pups in off limit areas.
