Product Description

Few structures in the United States have the history and reverence of The White House. On July 16, 1792, President George Washington chose this James Hoban design from six competing designs submitted by renowned architects. This six-story sandstone structure is an example of Neoclassical Federal style blended with Irish Palladianism, and was designed to command respect for the nation by citizens and foreign visitors. The building was constructed between 1792 - 1800, and later rebuilt by Hoban following a fire in 1814. This LEGO® Landmark series interpretation of The White House was designed by US architect Adam Reed Tucker in collaboration with the LEGO design team.

I'm a big fan of the LEGO Architecture series (before this purchase I owned the Seattle Space Needle and the Empire State Building). I mainly bought this set because I'd visited the White House whilst on holiday in the USA, and I needed to make another purchase on the LEGO online store to qualify for free shipping. The complete model looks very, very, very good. The detail is fantastic. Bricks have been effectively used to create shadows on window frames, and to recreate the iconic front and rear architecture. Some parts of the model are very repetitive (at one stage you build 16 of the exact same thing, consisting of 3 or 4 different parts). My only criticism of the model; WHY HAVEN'T YOU INCLUDED AN AMERICAN FLAG PLATE? The model includes a flag pole, however the flag is a 1x1 flat-brick which I found disappointing. Instead, I'm now chasing a 2x1 tile custom printed with the USA national flag. That's much better...

As a bit of a LEGO fanatic, I hate even to criticize, but there were a few things about this set that I wasn't happy with. The bushes in front of the building, for one, are a bit unconvincing and feel random. In terms of the general design, there was nothing that really stood out to me as particularly creative, and the build became pretty repetitive. That said, I think the building itself in real life is pretty uniform and not exactly amazing to look at (other than the obvious historical significance), so this criticism isn't really leveled at LEGO per se. It feels like the sort of addition to the series that was obligatory due to the prominence of the structure but not otherwise a really great subject for a model.

Glad I finally got this one

By LegoMeister

Comments about LEGO Architecture The White House (21006):

I don't know why I didn't buy the White House set earlier. Over the years I have bought, and built many of the Architecture Series. I've focused on my favorite architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, and also have built sets that have personal meaning to me. Somehow, this set slipped through the cracks. I'm glad I finally own and have built this set. At times, like in many of the Architecture Series, the build is repetitive. Architecture is repetitive, so I am okay with that. For a while I wished that the windows were made with clear bricks, but after a certain point in the build, I appreciated them as negative space. It actually makes the building look more cohesive, since it is mainly white, black and green with just a few gray, and brown pieces. One cool aspect of building an older Lego Architecture set after building a more recent one, is you see the evolution of the series. Buckingham Palace for instance, seems more detailed, even if the scale is different. They both display well, which I consider part of the play value. Looking forward to buying and building the United States Capital Building to add it to my DC display.

I love this collection myself. Bought one piece for grandsons birthday and saving the other for Christmas. Wish there was an original World Trade Center since he was not around to see the originals. It would make a wonderful history lesson.

    Frustrating at times

    By SusieJane

Comments about LEGO Architecture The White House (21006):

Previously built the Architecture Eiffel Tower and the Architecture Big Ben sets. I purchased this one as I liked the look of it. I built this after building the new Big Ben (10253) set, and the White House felt like such an inferior build. With hindsight, it would have been advisable to build the White House first. I had a few problems with the set coming apart. Some parts were only secure at the end of the build, once the roof and balcony railings had been put on. This has not put me off the Architecture sets, as I'm waiting for the 2 new sets that are being released later this year. The white flag looks pathetic, and a printed tile with the US flag would have looked so much better. Does the White House ever fly a white flag? In addition, instead of the green bricks, a few small trees/bushes would have improved the look of the front of the set. There is no playability with the set as it is designed for display purposes. Mine is now dismantled back in it's box, ready to be built again at some point.
