Received this product as a gift in return for a free review

First and most importantly, do not buy this if you are expecting it to be a fully maneuverable remote control aerial device, all it does is climb up into the air 12-15 feet and fly about 200-250 feet. You can then use the controls to turn it left or right before it glides down for a crash landing.

With that said, my son loves the looks of this and was hand-flying it around the house before I could get it loaded up with the 6 batteries it takes to charge it up. It has a highly detailed weathered paint scheme that helps add to the realism of the model. We both agreed it will look great on his display shelf.

It's also disappointing that the instructions recommend you only fly it indoors. But assuming you can even find a big enough room to fly it, is it fun? My son and I certainly thought so. We took it to an area gym and had a blast, flying it from the floor and for added excitement, from the top of the bleachers, and it soared across the gym before crash-landing full speed into the floor, stage curtain, or concrete wall. We were pleasantly surprised to see that the rugged Styrofoam body withstood even the fastest and hardest crashes without any dents or tears. The regular Styrofoam gliders we've used in the past seemed to always break in similar situations.

My 11 year old son, who insisted on the 4 star rating, wanted to share the following tips:

--Be sure to remove the laser guns from the wingtips before flying it
--Start the motors while still holding the ship, then gently toss it forward, nose slightly up
--Forget about doing complete turns, it will never turn fast enough
--Always fly it indoors as it works much better inside

I received this product free (from BzzAgent) in exchange for an honest review.

Overall:
*This product is not as intuitive as other remote control vehicles that we have owned. My 5 year old has never gotten the hang of it (but still loves it - check out the pictures), my 11 year old got the hang of it after about an hour, my husband got the hang of it after about 20 minutes.
*Friends who are huge Star Wars fans saw this after we got it and they tried it out as well. They loved it, but their experience was similar in that it was difficult to get the hang of how to fly this ship.

Pros:
*DURABLE - we've crashed the ship into a tree (a dozen times), into our home (almost as much) and into the ground (more times than I can count) and there is not one scratch, dent or mark on the ship. Unless something heavy fell on top of it I think the ship can withstand pretty much anything and it will not break easily.
*Easy to charge - it is as simple as installing batteries (not included - 6 AA) and plugging it in. We have charged it a few times since we received it and each charge last through one evening of play.
*Outstanding battery life - So far we have been playing with this for almost 2 weeks and are still on our first set of batteries.
*Both of my sons (ages 5 & 11) enjoy the ship and ask to play with it daily.

Cons:
*Confusing instructions - when I opened the box there was an insert that indicated it was only for indoor use, the instructions said only for outdoor use, the box did not specify. Ultimately, I decided that the instructions were correct and we only tested this outside.
*The controls are very difficult for a beginner. Personally, I would say that this is designed for Intermediate to Advanced skill level with remote control flying objects.
*The ship does a great job of gliding, but it is difficult to actually fly it like other remote control helicopters, planes, etc.
*The side guns can not be attached during flight so we have to remove them each time.

Looks great, poor handling

By Dave

Comments about Spin Master 1001130 Air Hogs Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens Remote Control X-Wing Starfighter:

My youth was spent making/flying model airplanes and fantasizing about being Luke Skywalker. Grew up to be a pilot, and like to think I'm okay with flying things. For all the terrific looks, this thing handles like a somewhat powered paper airplane. Using power to control pitch and yaw means it drops with any significant control inputs. Best way is to "pulse" the sticks instead of smoothly using the controls. If you want it to do more than just turn in a circle a few times, you're likely going to have to modify it-- there are a few YouTube videos out there. But honestly, there's still no way you could bag even a Womp Rat with this.

PS I also purchased the Millenium Falcon Airhog makes. Night and day with attention to detail, lights and sounds, flies great. Oh, and it has a USB jack, which for some obscure reason they didn't include with the X Wing (you'll burn through batteries recharging if you don't use it)

I own this great replica of the movie X Starfighter. I loved the movie and when I saw that an actual flying model was made I had to have it. The problem is that it hard to maintain on a level flight it goes into a dive before you can adjust the controller. I was surprised to find out that it does not have engines to make it hover while going forward. I think that it will become a collectors item. I am glad I got one . If you come with a newer model with better flight dynamics and features please let me know.

Flying the X-wing

By John

Comments about Spin Master 1001130 Air Hogs Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens Remote Control X-Wing Starfighter:

Model arrived in good order, well packaged and protected.
It is a simple model, well detailed, light in weight for proper flying. I found that the instructions were limited in scope, relying on artwork and simple verbage to detail setup and flying. While aimed squarely at young persons, the model is not strong enough to stand more than a few hard landings. The flyer does not need to understand basic aerodynamics to fly the model but with limited thrust for climbing and turning, any turns result in altitude loss. It should not be flown in a 'confined' area, as the turning area is large for a model this size, and response is slow in recovery. At the normal retail price, the model is over priced simply from the standpoint of a durable toy. I can well imagine that a good many that were sold ended up in a trash can within a few days of opening, as success from a raw beginner would prove challenging, to the disappointment of the child and the parent who spent over $100.
Overall, the quality is good, it is well packaged and completely assembled. It would make a nice display model between flying sessions, or when retired. I am an active, experience radio control flyer, with a good understanding of aerodynamics and aircraft control. Since the first flight is basically a trimming flight, caution should be indicated in the instructions to allow it to climb straight ahead, and make small thrust corrections to control climb. There is too much tension on the throttle stick, as any relaxing of forward pressure will allow the thrust to fall off sufficiently that the model may go into 'glide' mode. If recovery from nose down is not initiated right away, there is insufficient thrust to arrest the rate of descent. If flying over hard ground, the model may be damaged in the ensuing landing.
While all this seems negative, it is a wonderful concept, a nice looking model, and with practice, could become a real fun flyer.

my son was dying for this. So we got it, got it home, and charged it up (doesn't take long at all) we got it to fly...you have to rev it up and then toss it into the air for it to take flight.
It is pretty cool. it doesn't FLY FLY like I thought it would. BUUUUTTT it flies enough, considering I would hate for it to fly over the fence or fly far away. We will take it to the park and really test it out when the weather warms up.

This is an awesome toy once you figure out how to fly it. It definitely needs modifications. You need to be crafty in order to make it work. We taped on a dime in the front and the side and it balanced it. We shaved off a little bit on the back, and now it fly's really well. This is now the best Christmas gift my son has gotten.

    Guaranteed to disappoint

    By Joe

    from Dallas, TX

Comments about Spin Master 1001130 Air Hogs Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens Remote Control X-Wing Starfighter:

It doesn't actually stay in the air and nosedives 9 out of 10 attempts. When it does stay in the air (due to a slight breeze in the right direction and a good throw) for more than a second, there is no sense of control with the remote. Pretty sturdy foam does not break even after about 100 nosedives into the grass. Laser cannons come off with each nosedive. Guaranteed to disappoint kids even kids with lots of patience

Comments about Spin Master 1001130 Air Hogs Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens Remote Control X-Wing Starfighter:

Santa brought this gift to my son. Fighter would climb high then drop to the ground. Had I not had some flying experience I may not have been able to help him controll it. You have to controll altitude by the use of throttle positioning. Reduce thrust as the nose comes up increase thrust as the nose drops. This should keep you in the air. Watch out for any obstacles. Trees, posts, poles or anything you may hit as you cannot steer it very well. You can controll thrust from left to right engines but it does not respond quickly enough to avoid an impact, which may break the irreplaceable, clear plastic leading airfoil, leaving your X-wing grounded. Clearer flight operation instructions would be a plus. As would having a replaceable clear plastic leading airfoil.
