I feel like this set is getting a bad reputation simply because of the UCS label on the box. Speaking as someone who did not previously own every Hoth set, the value of this set is decent enough if you evaluate it on its own merits. It is only in comparison to the expectations of the UCS label that it becomes a disappointment. This set is quite nice to build as it is by nature broken up into several smaller sets that can be completed in a shorter sitting and still leave you with the sense of satisfaction completing a LEGO set always provides. The smaller white pieces of snow can be a bit tedious but I feel the overall aesthetic is worth the extra attention. The play features on this set are fantastic. My daughter absolutely loves the wampa and tauntaun, as well as the ice cave and service crane. The blast doors and snow speeder are also great play set items. While I feel confident in complimenting the play features of this set, I feel that compliment is pointing to the major issue most people are having with this set, and that is the inclusion of the UCS label on the box. In calling this a UCS set it does two things, one sets up a false sense of expectation for what the set actually is, and two it takes up the spot for LEGO to put out another UCS set for summer 2016. If this set had come out just as a major large normal "Hoth Echo Base Playset" with no collector series label, I don't feel like it would be holding its steady 2 brick review online. Valuing this set on what comes in the box I do feel like having the same printing on Wes Janson and Wedge Antilles is a cheap out and shouldn't have happened. I also feel at the price another hundred or so elements could have been used to close up the back of the blast doors and make it more "baselike". I can forgive the Ion cannon for the play feature, but having the backside of the base connect to the other scenes in the set and then having it look unfinished is a major oversight in my opinion and my most harsh complaint overall with the set. In summation, take the UCS label off, be transparent that you just skipped development on a UCS set for this time and let people know what they are actually spending their money on. If you do that I think this set has great merit in its own right, it just wasn't given a fair shake by the company.

I'll start with the positives, the base door is cool, the command center inside is nice. The minifigs are fun. It's great to have a power generator and the Ion Blast Cannon.

But the big issue with this set is how incomplete it is. I'm not talking about missing things like AT-ATs, more imperials, etc, I'm talking about incomplete builds. The power generator is the worst culprit. There should be 4 of those disk things, Lego only made three. There are multiple spots to put the gun towers, but the set only comes with two. Sure you can buy Hoth Attach and get another, but this set should have come with 4. The back of the Ion Cannon is not finished, so it looks pretty bad from the back. The Wampa cave is just a doorway, you can't even fit Luke and the Wampa in it together. No Princess Leia was an amazingly bad oversight. She is crucial to this set.

Now if you are like me and have a lot of the other Hoth themed sets, it was a very fun project to integrate them all together like I did. I purchased lots of extra snowtroopers to make it actually look like an Assault on Hoth.

I've added a few pics to show what you can do with the set if you have some other Hoth themed stuff and the patience to expand what Lego started with (which is the point of Lego sometimes).

Poor remake.

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Assault on Hoth (75098):

This set is really poor. It's not original because this set is put together with A few existing smaller old sets instead of making a new design.

Very Disappointing

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Assault on Hoth (75098):

I bought this from another online retailer, and all I have to say is what a disappointment.....Probably one of the worst LEGO sets I have purchased in a long time. Set is not a difficult build, but it has no cohesiveness. The shield generator is missing the fourth module, the Ion cannon is poorly constructed, and the Minifigure selection is a joke (WHERE IS LEIA?). Lastly, the set is not worth the asking price. Wait for a drop in price if you feel you must have it.

This set is amazing, a little pricey, but I love it a lot and it was so fun to build and is so fun to play with. If you are looking for an ultimate collecters series star wars set w/o play features and just for display, this set may not be for you.

The Battle of Hoth

By Alanog1

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Assault on Hoth (75098):

This set certainly does not deserve the negative hype, I was a bit apprehensive after reading it but I went ahead anyways and it did not disappoint.

The great thing about this is that it is so easy to customise and make it your own. Each individual part can be moved around and changed as much as you like but there is also room for you to extend the set and build more onto it yourself using spare bricks from your own collection.

The gate is really cool, it could have been a tiny bit bigger as you can only just about fit the snowspeeder thorough but that is only a tiny detail. The ion cannon does look like it is missing pieces from the back but it is supposed to be tilted backward and pointing at the sky anyways so you dont even notice this really.

I would have liked the turrets to be a small bit taller they are but other than that they are pretty cool! The trenches look great and the rebel minifigures are very well done. The lack of imperial troops is a good point but there are plenty more sets that are or have been available that include more snowtroopers.

All in all i would definitely recommend this and I think it is great that Lego are still releasing sets from the original star wars movies and not just the new one. Hopefully more UCS sets are released soon as I find these are always the best!

It was a great pleasure to build this year's UCS. It was a little challenging but extremely fun. I always look forward to all the new Star Wars LEGOs but especially the UCS.

another enjoyable distraction

By woodturnerRay1

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Assault on Hoth (75098):

I am a retired/disabled licensed aircraft mechanic with a engineering degree who enjoys working with my hands. I am a wood craftsmen who has COPD which limits my working and crafting with wood. I also use to design tools for jet engines. Working with LEGO is a enjoyable substitute and keeps my hands busy. I especially enjoy the Technic series because of my earlier reasoning. Please continue with your more complicated menu.
