I got this electronic chess computer for Christmas. Sure, you can play chess on your smartphone, tablet, or computer. But there's nothing like playing chess on a real chessboard with real chess pieces.

The board is much more compact than the huge box it comes in would suggest. Overall, it measures about 12" x 12" but the actual chessboard is 7.25" x 7.25" with each square measuring slightly under 1". The King measures 1.75" tall. You can't store the pieces inside the board, but it does come with a drawstring storage pouch to keep the pieces together when not playing. The pieces are pretty small and the board does feel cramped especially at the start of a game. If you have large or fat fingers, it will be easy to unintentionally knock over other pieces. But this becomes less of a problem as the game progresses and pieces are eliminated and spread out more. My only other gripe about the pieces is that the box states that the pieces are weighted. They are not. My set came with lightweight hollow plastic pieces.

The electronic board itself is quite nice. The touch sensitive board is quite sensitive with only a very light touch needed to record a move. The moves are indicated by LED lights on rank and file. After a quick read of the instructions, I had no problem playing a game. The controls seem to make logical sense and are pretty intuitive. There are 16 playing levels with 4 styles each, totalling 64 levels of difficulty. The 4 styles include normal, aggressive, defensive, and high-risk. You can take back moves (up to 2 full moves). You can play as either white or black. You can play with the sound on or off. You can also customize the board set up and have the computer solve mate in one (up to mate in 5) chess puzzles. It all seems to be very versatile.

This is good for anyone just beginning to learn chess as it has several beginner playing levels as well as a training mode. It's also great for intermediate players who can't always find someone to play against.

There was a golden time for chess computers with sensory boards in the 80s when the German Hegener & Glassner produced the excellent Mephisto line, followed by Novag and others. Those where marvelous algorithms running on limited hardware. Later Mephisto was sold to Saitek, who converted it into a horrible scam by flooding the market with lots of models covering all the prize spectrum with algorithms that played bad chess on purpose, so that the consumer would be compelled to acquiring more expensive model in the false hope that it would play better. This damaged forever the reputation of chess computers, and the rise of PCs did the rest.

I still play against one of the pre-Saitek era machines, after 32 years. Then I saw this model yesterday in Toys R Us and wondered, perhaps this is the beginning of a resurrection?. I'll give it a try.

It is meant to be used on a stable horizontal surface because the pieces are very light and have no magnets. However the board is very sensitive and the overall impression is: not bad.

The opening book is too short. The position evaluation function seems to be based on material only, so the playing style is ugly, moving the Queen too soon and ignoring positional weaknesses. Yet, if you are below regular club player level and you set the time at 1 min per move, it may beat you. It is not as horrible as those infamous Saitek products that had a picture of Kasparov on the box.

This is a test game against my old chess computer (rated around 1400 FIDE in collector sites). The Pavilion plays black at 30s per move: 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 [Pavilion out of book here] Nc6 3. Bc4 Qg5(?) 4. Nd5 Bd6 5. Nf3 Qg4 6. d3 Nf6 7. Nxf6+ gxf6 8.
Bxf7+(!) Ke7 [at least it does not fall on the trap... yet] 9. O-O Kxf7 (??) 10. Ng5+(!) Qxg5 11. Bxg5 fxg5 12. Qh5+ Kf6 13. Qh6+ Kf7 14.
Qxg5 Nd4 (?) 15. Qh5+ Ke6 16. f4 Nxc2 17. Qh6+ Kf7 18. fxe5+ Ke8 19. exd6 Nxa1 (???) [stupid material only evaluation function in action] 20.
Qh5+ Kd8 21. Qg5+ Ke8 22. Qe7# 1 0

This is just what I was looking for. A chess game that teaches, has 64 levels from easy to forget it! and 4 game styles (levels 0 thru 15 with four different game styles each). Level 0 is for 2 players and the computer referees.
