I had had about enough of buying Christmas toys and gifts for the kids in my life, so I thought I'd buy myself a little treat. When I saw these, I went back to Christmases from my childhood and couldn't resist.

The tank measures 5" tall. The top is 1 7/8" x 8 3/8", and the bottom is 1 1/4" x 7 3/4", which makes it a little top-heavy.

I was a little concerned about this product after reading some of the reviews on another site about magic rock sets being sold there (different brands). I am 100% convinced that either these folks didn't follow the directions (you absolutely must follow them EXACTLY), or their kits were of the antique variety and maybe the chemicals had degraded. The set I purchased from the Toys R Us website was manufactured in June 2012, so no worries there.

It worked exactly according to specs, although some of the colors on the spires seem a bit washed out from their "pre-grow" colors.

There are a couple of cons with this specific set. First, there are some plastic "nubs" leftover from the manufacturing mold on the bottom of the tank that make it a bit wobbly. I recommend sanding or grinding them down before starting. Also, with the tank being top-heavy, so you really have to use it away from any type of play activity, and make sure the table you use is stable. Personally, the next time I buy a set of rocks and chemicals to use with this tank, I would glue the bottom of the tank to a piece of scrap plywood.

All that said, this was a very enjoyable activity to do with my 10-year-old nephew, even if I did have to constantly scold him for horsing around in the room with the rocks. I completed the activity on Saturday, 12/8, and it is now Thursday 12/13 and the rocks are still nice to look at. Only a couple of spires have broken from the initial change to plain tap water.

Very hard to figure out. no fun at all. My grand daughter was frustrated. I like to spend time doing things with each grand child. I felt like I hurt her with this gift.

Comments about Toys R Us 1001325 Edu Science Magic Rocks:

The instructions are clear, yet the actual experience is not worth it. The first set of rocks grew amazingly fast, but super thin. Once the time period was up and you have to change out the water, everything broke, they tumbled and the second, supposedly "final extreme growth" didn't produce anything at all!! Both of my kids were very disappointed in not being able to see anything through dark water and then seeing the rocks not growing like the kit promises.

Comments about Toys R Us 1001325 Edu Science Magic Rocks:

My son loved this kit. He received it as a birthday gift. We followed the instructions & they were fairly simple. The rocks grew really well & tall. However, they were brittle so I wouldn't recommend moving it much. We tried emptying the water some to put fresh in but some of the taller crystals broke. When the kit is first progressing, the water stayed clear but by the end of the day, the water had turned blue. That was where it lost a star for me. I would like to see it stay clear so that the kit could be enjoyed for a longer amount of time. It is hard to view the magic rocks through colored water. The kit is for a 1 time use. Overall, my child loved it & that's what counts for me!

Bought this for my 12 yr old daughter. She was so excited, because she like this sort of thing, it didn't end up growing much at all. We followed the directions to a T. Waste of money.

The directions are a convoluted mess of what could be a fun experience. The last one we had was as simple as pour the mixture in a jar. This one starts with putting a piece of aluminum foil in the bottom of the tank and gets way more stupid as it goes on.
