Just received the Lego Maze in the mail today and couldn't wait to put it together. Threw the whole thing together in about 3 hours (including a light lunch). Overall I love the mechanics/inner mechanisms that make the maze work, it is pretty cool to see how the tilting action takes place. I LOVE the idea that it is insanely modifiable and that many people can submit ideas, build multiple levels, have different themes (I'm working on a star wars one), but there is one major problem. In 2 directions the maze is greatly hampered in its ability to tilt. Sometimes when you are in a corner of the maze, you can't tilt enough to actually get it moving, so I do fear my wish to make a 2 story maze will greatly be influenced on the directions in which I can tilt hard enough to get up a ramp. I believe it is fixable by using a straight piece rather than an L shaped piece with a shorter connector, but without a different sized connector I don't think I can fix it with the parts included. I'll have to cannibalize another set to fix it. The idea was great, the execution was a bit off, if I am able to make it work with the pieces included I'll submit an edit.

Firstly I'll explain the problem, as it's nothing to do with a "faulty part" as LEGO suggested in their response to one review... There are two connecting bars ("Track Rod 6M", element ID "4211026"). They are both the same length - this is what causes the tilting to be wrong as some previous reviewers have noted. In order to correct this problem LEGO will need to produce a rod that is a little shorter to be connected to the inner tray section - if they can do that (and issue them to every one that has bought this!), this will be so much better as a build! I must admit I have no idea how this got past the LEGO "engineers", as it is a very basic flaw... But on to the rest of it. This is a fairly straight-forward build, with colour coding to make sure you always have it the right way round. If you follow the instructions properly it it's quite robust and never feels flimsy or in danger of falling apart, although the actual baseplate could have done with being a little thicker just to give it the feeling of being built on something sturdy. There are a truly staggering amount of flat-top plates, which makes it a great purchase if you enjoy designing your own structures and need a large number - although it should be noted that most are beige. On the subject of designing your own...once you've built the two mazes for which instructions are provided, there are another couple they show finished - and the internet is already producing some very nice designs, so the rebuild possibilities are superb even if you (like me) suck at design ;) All in all, it's a pretty good set, with plenty of scope - but the "engineers" really should have spotted (and corrected!) the glaring problem...

Comments about LEGO Ideas Maze (21305):

While a little overpriced, this is a fun and unique Lego build. You get two specific build options, though your imagination makes them limitless. I'd compare this to the Lego Chess sets most. It's a fun novelty that can be set on a coffee table to be played with and admired. Get yourself one now because they probably won't do anything like this again.

Brilliant Idea and Design w/ Great Play Experience

Comments about LEGO Ideas Maze (21305):

This set is marvelous. It was a gift for my 10 year old son. He, and everyone else in the family, love it. He enjoyed the build experience, especially the mechanisms to tilt the game board. The built game is quite sturdy and really fun and challenging to play. I can't understand why the set has already been flagged as being retired soon???? It would be nice if both mazes could be built at the same time; it wouldn't add many parts to the set. When you build it, make sure to press all of the tiles down firmly to avoid any slightly raised surfaces on the board. This leads me to one play issue... The balls are not perfectly round. There are two small holes at the poles which create flat spots that prevent the ball from rolling freely and predictably. This can be very frustrating while playing. Of course, other similar sized balls (e.g. marbles) can also be used, but you'd think Lego could make a round ball. The only other complaint that I have is an old pet peeve of mine. The box that the set comes in is (just barely) too small for the built set to fit in. This drives me nuts. I'd like to be able to store the built set in its original box, and not have to tear it down. For many sets this is not practical, but for this one it certainly is and it seems like a no-brainer, since this set is intended to be played with as a game. If you remove one of the wheels (not hard to do), it nearly fits in the box, but not quite. Lego really should do a better job of sizing their set boxes relative to the built model, not just the parts. Please don't retire this set!

This is the 2nd one I've bought , as I loved mine, so bought one for my adult son. Great because you can change just the top , lots of fun ideas online. Can make it easy for the grandkids , or as complex as you want. And the base was fun to build too.

Christmas gift, so haven't used it yet, but it was shipped quickly and looks just as described. I'm really excited about this gift, as my son loves Legos and really enjoys using his creativity to make things. The story behind this Lego set is a real inspiration as well.

My son played with this in the Lego store, so I decided to get it for him. He was starting to get out of Legos, but this one brought him right back! He's 9, so this was a good challenge for him and one that he could leave together and continue to play with.
