The quality of the plastic is excellent so it's not the quality itself that is an issue, it's the design. The gyroscope on the top does not work since it loses momentum half way down after the ripcords were taken out and buttons pressed. We have tried upwards of 20 times and we have not gotten it to work on the top at all. My husband, son and myself tried it several times however, the gyroscope just loses momentum halfway or a quarter of the way down the loop and does not complete decent to the battle ground. This seems to be based on the fact that it is travelling fairly far and the gyroscope is fairly heavy for the plastic to travel in a consistent pattern to make it fully down the battle arena. In conclusion, the gyroscope seems to be too heavy with the plastic being so light. I'm not sure if there is a way to make the gyroscope out of some other kind of lighter material to make sure it doesn't feel top-heavy and fall off the top but that's what's happening. Even on the bottom that's been the majority of the problem.

As a disclaimer, I was sent a free copy of this toy to review. That said, this is our 100% honest opinion of the toy.

When we first saw the box we were very excited as this wasn't something we would normally buy. The choice of figures to include, a futuristic soldier and a zombie holding a brain, had him even more excited to have them fight.

The playset was packaged quite well, though removing the Rip-Spin Warriors without damaging the box was very difficult. In the end, it involved me and a box cutter arm deep in the box. In the end, trying to save the box was a wasted effort as the toy doesn't readily disassemble again to fit back in the box for storage.

Putting the toy together was quite easy. The instructions are rather vague though, consisting of mostly pictures with very few words. With my son helping me and working at a normal pace, initial assembly took me little more than 12 minutes.

We tried out the primary feature of the Arena immediately: the Twin Tornado zip lines. While we could get one of the Warriors into it's base just fine, the other had trouble lining up with the hole for the rip cord. The difficulty was compounded by the base releasing to launch from the pressure of just inserting the figure. After a few minutes of messing with it, we got it to fit right. We inserted the cords, pulled them and pressed the launcher button. One side worked perfectly while the other had the Warrior tipping over midway through the zip line. I ended up going over the entire arena a couple times to determine the cause of the problem which took me several more minutes.

As it turns out, neither Warrior would complete the loop unless I pulled the cord rather hard. The problem with this, is that the amount of force required to reliably launch is greater than what my 7 year old was able to regularly muster. When he would pull it hard enough he'd almost knock over the Arena from the wild motions he had to make. Even with a successful launch we still ran into other issues. One problem that was particularly annoying was the Rip Spin Warriors' tendancy to launch sideways and spin out against the plastic base. The noise this produced was so bad that it actually scared my son the first couple times it happened. These spinouts also scratched and scuffed the arena base.

Moving on to the lower launchers, these were much easier to use. They launched the figures more consistantly, though were prone to their own set of launch failures. Particularly, the force of pulling the cord would sometimes cause a false start. Since the cord was still threaded through the figure, the figure wouldn't launch. Spinouts were far less frequent with the lower launchers, which was a relief.

The arena has been left set up so that my son can play with it any time he wants. While he has shown a bit of interest in the Rip Spin Warrior figures, he has yet to return to the arena. Being unable to use the Arena by himself, despite being in the intended age group, turned him off the toy very quickly. While the idea was very interesting the execution was a bit lacking. Neither one of us would recommend it to others.

Comments about Mattel 1001134 VS Rip-Spin Warriors Twin Tornado Arena Playset with 2 Warrior:

In theory, this is a fun toy. However, it is difficult to make the men successfully spin down the track. I have an 8 year old with special needs, and he just can't pull with enough force or get the man just right in to start. My 3 year old enjoys it, but of course can't do it himself. The spinning action is short lived for the work to get them down to "battle".
