The Basics
A high chair is the perfect spot for baby to eat, play, and share in mealtime with the family. A high chair should
only be used once your child is able to sit upright unassisted, usually around 4-5 months. Only high chairs with a
reclining seat should be used for bottle-feeding younger infants. Your child can continue to use a high chair until
2-3 years of age, at which time you can make the transition to a booster seat. A booster seat rests on one of your
regular dining chairs to raise your child up to table height. Some basic features to look for in a high chair

Safety Tips
A high chair is designed to provide a safe dining experience for your child. There are a few general safety
precautions to keep in mind as you welcome baby into this new stage of feeding.
- Always use the restraint system when your child is in the high chair.
- Never depend on the tray to restrain your child.
- Never leave your child in a high chair unattended.
- Check the locking mechanism before each use to avoid accidental folding while your child is in the high chair.
- Use the high chair away from all tables, counters, and walls.
- Keep breakable items, such as plates and glasses, well out of your child's reach.
The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, Inc. (JPMA) has developed a certification system to identify which products have been manufactured with safety in mind. Look for the JPMA seal while you're shopping for a high chair. It's an easy way to make sure the high chair you choose meets the highest standards for safety.
