Rated 4 out of 5 by MegEBK from Mostly Awesome We got this for my daughter's birthday. We picked this specifically due to her love of all things musical. Within an hour we threw away the harmonica (cheap plastic harmonica that blew so horribly out of tune and high pitched at that!) and the kazoo (there wasn't any way to actually get air through it or anything inside of it to create the classic, kazoo sound!). That being said, we love the box it came in. 2 years later and that is still what we store them in. All of the other instruments play nicely and have held up through 2 years of play and a cross country move. If you want a kazoo or harmonica, look elsewhere, otherwise this box is for you!

Rated 1 out of 5 by Anikee from Terrible Someone at Scholar's Choice made me switch the instrument set I had picked for the Melissa and Doug's saying it was "the real deal" and boy did I ever regret listening to her... I am a big fan of wooden toys but 3/5 items did not work... The kazoo did not make any sounds and wood particles flew out of it when we blew in it for the first time!! The harmonica made terrible sounds & graphics were already faded on it, and the xylophone, barely makes any noise.. what a disappointment... no wonder it was on clearance.. I can't even return it. Save your money.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Lori from beginner band set I bought this set for my 2 year old. The harmonica, jingle stick, and the castanets were a hit. However, the xylophone and the kazoo were a huge disappointment. No sound will come out of the kazoo. As for the xylophone, the only time we can really hear different musical notes is if we run the wooden mallet quickly across all of the bars at one time. If we simply hit each bar separately, the sounds are very close and not at all entertaining for our little one.

Rated 2 out of 5 by MrsB from Noise makers, not instruments We didn't realize the instruments wouldn't be tuned. For example, the xylophone's keys are not in order. They are just random notes, not in a scale. That makes this a really poor toy for people who would like children to learn something about music. It's only useful as a noise maker. A shame from a toy company I had trusted to make good quality toys. As a Kindergarten teacher and mother, I would not recommend this toy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Charles from Have already purchased another one. Purchased for a 1 yr. old. Loves banging the xylophone really hard with the mallet. Glad it's durable. She loves to chew on the mallet, crawl around with it and loves climbing in and out of the wooden box that has sharp edges. Toy is not recommended for a child this age but eyes are on her at all times and we correct these situations. She really enjoys the instruments.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Emily from Just okay I liked the variety of instruments in the box. However the quality of the instruments was not what we've come to expect from Melissa and Doug products, particularly the xylophone. I was disappointed that the xylophone was not at all a scale in tune, despite being labeled as such.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Cassandra from Love! My grandson is enjoying his new band in a box and I consider it his first official music lesson from me. I can't say my daughter and son-in-law love it as much as I do, because they are not as noise loving as I am, so it's strictly a Nonna/ Maxwell activity. And that's awesome.

Rated 3 out of 5 by ToddlerMusicianMama from Fun, but... Ok, so these are mostly great...and I don't expect a toy to be concert quality, BUT the xylophone is driving this musician family NUTS, especially my perfect pitch hubby. Please, if you are going to put note names on the xylophone, at least tune it! It is AWFUL. Simply awful.
