This product is not up to the usual little tikes standard of quality.
Firstly, screws supplied for assembly were blunt ended and yet need to pierce the plastic screw this unit together securely so you will need a drill bit or sharp screw or nail to pierce the plastic first. Second, you will need a long narrow screwdriver as some of the screws go into long narrow areas. Then, once it is together you will need lots of patience to make the actual ice cream unless your child is happy with runny cold sweetened cream..... It probably took closer to 20 or 30 minutes of turning (by which stage the kids have lost interest and you'll be doing it) and even then, the edges froze nicely but there was still runny cream in the middle of the tiny little cannister. Then comes the impossible part. The seal for the salt and ice section just will not come off to drain it. There is no way to release the vacuum and re-freezing the ball or immersing it in warm water hasn't helped so far. I haven't tried the pliers as others have as I'm sure that will damage the plastic and I am still waiting for little tikes to get back to me about how this should be opened without having to resort to raiding tool chests (it's supposed to be for kids right?). The other thing is that the ball the ice cream is made in is quite hard to get into the slots properly without dropping the ball (for this adult) and impossible for the kids to do by themselves (but then maybe they'll drop the ball, crack it, make it unuseable and it'll be their fault so I can throw it in the trash, where it belongs, without feeling guilty as it's broken............) I wish I had never bought this item and put the money towards a real ice cream maker instead.

I bought these for my nieces & they loved it. The kids are so proud that they made it themeselfs! Was not hard at all ~ just took a little patience Unlike everyone else has said... we have alot of fun doing crafts like this. Made for a definite family fun activity.

The reviewers who think this hard and time consuming have probably never made homemade ice cream before, it isn't a quick and simple thing to do! The reason it only makes a severing at a time is so it can freeze quicker and your child doesn't wait as long, it also keeps them from eating more than they should. I use my own receipes so I make it large quanties and just have it ready to go. All this summer in Houston it has been non stop 100-103 degrees with a rare low of 98 so we have used it daily or more and it has held up, im very impressed

My daughter received this item for her birthday. She couldn't wait to have my husband put it together and make homemade ice cream. We turned the crank for 10 minutes like it said. It took us another 10 minutes to get the darn thing open to find out that it was still ALL liquid. Cranked it for another 10 minutes...still all liquid. Cranked for another 10 minutes...still all liquid. I finally just put it in a bowl and gave my daughter a straw to drink it. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!

If you're looking for a birthday gift to give to the child of someone you strongly dislike, check this out!

The parents will spend 5 minutes mixing ingredients, chopping ice, and trying to get the %&$# ball into the turner thingie. Then they'll spend TEN minutes cranking the darn thing while their kids ask them every 2 seconds if it's done yet. Next they'll get to spend another 5 minutes trying to dig the ice cream out of the tiny little compartment, only to find that they've only produced enough to cover the bottom of 1 ice cream dish. So, they have to repeat the entire process and in the end, they themselves don't get so much as a bite because they've barely managed to make 1/2 cup of ice cream total.

And the best part? The ice cream stand thingie is too big to put away in a cabinet, so it'll be within the kids' eyesight at all times, which will, of course, prompt them to beg, whine and cry at least 3 or 4 times a day to make ice cream. So awesome!!!

my kids received this as a gift and i wish i would've brought it back. Not worth the effort at all. it makes enough ice cream for 1 cone so I had to do it 3 times so each of my kids could have one. Not to mention that the cap was so hard to get off that after i almost sprained my thumb i had to get pliers to twist it off. And the ice cream wasn't even frozen is was very mushy.....DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM.

I think this would be great for the kids and they would have a lot of fun playing by themselves or with friends. It will be great for kids but the work you have to put into this, (the ADULT) is not so great.

These are some things I like about this product:
*fun for kids (playing pretend, group activity or just by themselves)
* makes a yummy treat for the kids
* cute design
* gives the kids something fun to do on a warm sunny day--playing with this outside might be a better idea than playing with it inside

These are the things I don't like about this product:
* not easy to assemble-the orange plate that holds the mixer was VERY DIFFICULT to get on
*I can't find ROCK SALT--ANYWHERE! I looked up online that rock salt can be substituted with table salt or kosher salt but they are a little more $$

Overall--this is a cute product for kids but needs adult help. So if your up to the challenge, I recommend this product for your little ones.

But I suggest you:
*substitute rock salt with kosher or table salt (they are easier to find)
* make sure you have a thin screwdriver to assemble this product

My daughter just loves this toy. It is fun for pretend play as well as to make the ice cream. Adult help is needed, but it is very easy and the ice cream is yummy. It only makes enough for one serving each time, but that makes a nice snack. After the ice cream freezes, it is sometimes hard to get the lids off. I just make sure I line up the arrow and then use a knife to help it open. This is a neat hands on experience for children and cooler than the little snow cone makers etc. because it can be used for pretend play as well. It is also small enough that it does not take up a lot of space in the garage or the house. So far we have only used it in the house. I do think the fifty dollars is a bit much to pay so if you can get it on sale...great!
