This Train Rocks
Our 2 year old grandson loved trains, so last year we bought this set to add to his small Duplo collection. As an educator and grandparent I'm impressed with the design of this train. It's easy to build a working track and even if it doesn't make a closed loop, the train still runs. It starts with a push and stops when he smacks it or pulls at it. It stays on the track reasonably well and is simple for him to rerail on his own. The connections on the cars are sturdy and simple and the action blocks are genius. They're just colored plastic. The magic is the reader in the bottom of the train. It runs across that color and does something. Watching my grandson fiddle with where to put a stop or a whistle block and how to get a train to back up or pause is so interesting. He's teaching himself the "if/then" sequence used by programmers and the logic used in every discipline. One down side to the set is the small amount of track included. We bought a bunch more as it gives him so many more play opportunities. It would have been nice if the original set came with a bit more. He's had this train for a year and a half now and it's still a favorite toy. While the phone app is cute and clever, he's much more interested in the train itself, building and changing it over and over. Love it.

Great first train
Got this for my 4 year old girls. They loved it and so did I. Action block and app make for interactive play. We use it as a center piece for the rest of our Duplo themes.

Not Strong Enough Motor
I bought this together with the Train Bridge and Tracks (10872) and the engine with an empty car can't make it to the top of the bridge 30%-40% of the time. When using the app, the motor is noticeably weaker and stops 90% of the time before reaching the bridges's top. The tracks+bridge were setup on a flat, solid surface. Fresh AAA Energizer batteries were used.
This is just nitpicking on an otherwise amazing set.

Frustrating locomotive and incompatible tracks
The electric locomotive does not move easily without the batteries. This product is labelled as for 2-5 year age category. Although our 2-year old loves pushing trains along tracks, he doesn’t yet understand the electronics. It is not a nice experience for him without batteries and with them he gets frustrated at the (in his perception) random start /stop behaviour of the train.
As a parent, it is also very frustrating that the train tracks (in particular the bridge in a separate set) are not compatible with ‘my first number train’ or some other trains and vehicles currently available. In my opinion it was a mistake to phase out the locomotive without electronics.

Great track, poor quality train
Purchased in June for my son, we enjoyed playing with the set and he loved playing with it adding to the original set, only problem is that the train stopped working, fault on the on button, really disappointed as my son loves it.

Poor Battery Compartment
Purchases this for my 3 year old son.
Excellent product with good lego tracks and charecters.
Problem i faced is in train battery compartment. 2 out of 3 times it did not sit/fix/work. Hence returned the product.

I bought this for my son for Christmas a year ago he loves it. I got him more tracks for Christmas this year he couldn’t wait to play. When he got the train out it no longer works (he had just used it a few days before) we tried two different sets of batteries from different brands and nothing. Now he has tracks he just got that he can’t play with. Makes for one unhappy 3 year old. I expected to get more than one year out of this train glad I decided not to add the bigger set.

Not as good as previous trains
My 2-year old loves the previous issue motorised Duplo trains since he can push them along by himself, or use the big green button to start them going and stop them as he pleases. On this new train, however, you can't push it along by itself - it will always start running, which limits his play options. (It also requires quite a shove which will also sometimes move and therefore break apart the train tracks it is resting on). Also, weirdly, it doesn't auto-power down when left idle - it just sits there, not moving, but draining its battery unless an adult thinks to turn it over and notice the blue light. Maybe it powers off eventually, but it hadn't after a few hours of not being used.
The bluetooth app is not an essential part of the toy, but is poorly designed for very young children since only a small part of the phone interface is given to the train control, so the distance to move from full speed forward to full speed reverse is tiny (and on a modern iPhone is also near the edge of the screen and thus triggers other parts of the OS interface).
Overall I find it hard to believe this has had much testing at the lower end of its target age range, since it's natural for little kids to want to push along their trains themselves sometimes.

Bad locomotive design
I bought this for my 3 year old son. It was pretty frustrating for him to push the locomotive because it wouldn't move. The push and play mechanism, while not a bad idea, should be made in such a way that it still can be deactivated. Also, the motor makes a dreadful noise, we as parents couldn't stand it and he got scared and asked us to remove the batteries. I am sorry Lego but I took it upon myself to just remove the motor and let the wheels move freely. My son is now playing with it more. Last but not least, please do not encourage phone engaging in toddlers. He became more fascinated by the phone app than the train itself so we had to delete it. It's very sad to see that we cannot change the lights manually. Please make all app features available without the app too. Other than that, I love the plastic quality and the colors.

Pros:
-beautiful figurines,
- love the idea of action bricks,
Cons:
- the app "connected train" does not work, we've tried 3 devices, including a Huawei P8 lite that's the on verified and compatibile list of devices,
- the train motor is too loud.
I would not recommend it.
Probablly will return it.

Cool product when it works!
Really like the product when it actually works. The batteries will not stay properly seated in the battery compartment. Train is not reliably powered because the battery lose contact frequently. Fun while it lasts but doesn't take long before the train stops again.

Cool train, poor bridge
Bought this awesome steam train for our sons 4th birthday and he also got the bridge expansion pack. Unfortunately the train won't make it up the incline or down the decline. It has to be forced up and down. Makes for a bad play experience. Very disappointed.

Duplo train
I have been wanting a train for under my Christmas tree for years. My kids are all grown now, but I wanted something the grandkids can play with. This is perfect! It fits with my other Duplo train tracks so I can make a variety of configurations. I love it!
