Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Underwhelming At first glance, this build is amazing. It looks like a transformer. I had fun building every individual part of Optimus. However, once it came down to putting all the pieces together, the illusion fell apart. It seems every time I would touch it, whole sections would fall off. It’s very delicate. I’m not sure if I got a defective product but the pieces don’t snap and lock in place like I’m used to. The quality of the pieces that matter most for this build feel like it’s from a dollar store knock off of LEGO bricks in my honest opinion. This is the first time I have felt like I didn’t get my money’s worth from a LEGO product. Very disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Prime build This was my first set that I purchased to display in my home. The building instructions were very easy to follow and I loved the end results. It is also fairly simple to perform the transformation from Prime to truck mode.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from buy this set if you are a G1 fan I've always been a super big fan of the G1 Transformers cartoon and this set meets and exceeds any expectations I had of lego and transformers colliding. Definitely worth the price as well having over 1500 pieces and being able to transform it without removing any pieces.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More than meets the eyes! Growing up in the 80s, The Transformers consumed a huge portion of my toy collection. I loved the cartoon series and would often pretend to be a Transformer as I’d ride my bike around the neighbourhood, making the *CHKK-CHRR-CHRRKK* sound. Needless to say, I was elated when Lego announced they’d finally be releasing an Optimus Prime set! This was a fun set to assemble and I could feel 7-year-old-me getting giddy as Optimus started to take form. I still haven’t transformed him into the big rig. I want to enjoy him in robot form for a while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Will There Be More? First of all, this is one of the most fun sets I built in 2022. It reignited my interest in the first generation of The Transformers. If you can spend the money, I would absolutely go all in on this set. The build was very satisfying and the end result is SO amazing. Such a fun display and the interchangeable hands are incredible! I absolutely LOVE the inclusion of the laser axe-hand. That was such a nice addition. Overall, I want more! Will we get Megatron? Starscream? BumbleBee? If the Lego Group makes more, I can guarantee them that I will be purchasing all of them. Ha ha ha! Cheers to the designer of Lego Optimus, it is marvelous! Happy 2023.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Looks amazing as robot, but sloppy mess as a truck I have to say that 14-year-old me was excited to see the announcement for this, even 30+ years later. The build is pretty straight forward and doesn't take very long. I feel like the axe and the cube and jetpack are kind of filler, but as a robot, Prime looks amazing. Unfortunately, the transformation is pretty terrible. The hands are flimsy, the torso rocks all over the place, and the "under carriage" around the hips will absolutely fall apart. When it is as a truck, everything fits in a sloppy way. It got worse when my smart 12-year-old tried to transform it. It just isn't meant to be played with. I figured it would be tight like the Voltron set, but it's not even close. Fairly disappointed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Looks Great Until It Crumbles This is a set that upon seeing on shelves immediately made its way onto my wishlist. My favorite movie of all time is the 1986 Transformers Movie. This set is incredibly accurate to the source material in both the vehicle and robot forms. The biggest issue with this set is the process that it takes to go between these modes. The structural integrity of this set is among some of the worst that I have witnessed in any Lego sets. While transforming, you must go into it with the expectation that parts will 100% fall apart and must be scavenged for on the floor. If only four parts fall off during transformation, consider yourself lucky.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Incredible Big Transformers collector here. This thing is a dream come true. Super posable aside from the knees. Easy to transform. Looks great. Fun to build. Good accessories. Pre-painted pieces for the eyes & shoulders (though the bumper & thighs have stickers). Good subtle weapon storage for the blaster in truck mode. And is that a trailer hitch I see? The color of the Matrix should have been blue, not orange, but that’s easy to fix. And it’s huge! Taller than every “Masterpiece” version of the character. It’s not exactly “durable.” Pieces will sometimes pop off unexpectedly during transformation. But not when you get the hang of it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Let’s Roll! If you were ever a fan of Transformers, this is a MUST HAVE! Build is great, size is perfect, and nothing but nostalgia when it’s all put together! This goes down as a legendary piece to own and looking forward to future of Lego transformers. Maybe Megatron!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nostalgic!! Worth the money and brings back memories of watching the show as a kid! The fact that it also transforms makes it even more worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing set! Please make more! I have over 100 Star Wars sets but this is the most fun I've ever had building a set. The details are spectacular and the size surprised me - I wasn't expecting it to be as big as it is. I really enjoyed the Optimus Prime facts scattered throughout the instructions. The only place I could possibly nitpick is the bumper you are supposed to swap when transforming. There is a nifty solution online where the bumper can be rotated to show the alternate version. Please LEGO make more Transformers sets. I'll get every single one if the build quality is as good as this!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally it is here! My wish cane true! I wrote to LEGO couple years ago if they would have a transformers LEGO and they said NO! Won’t get into details why, but here we are now with Optimus Lego! Overall I think price and build is fair. Got to understand when they partner with another company they must get a fair share. Design and execution looks great and I want to thank the creators behind it! Now Gundam needs to partner up with Lego!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible value Let me start by putting a little info out there.I have been building since I was little I have collected hundreds of Lego sets and have rebuilt plenty from my childhood putting them on display across my home. And I can't think of a single set I was compelled to write a review for. This set is the first Optimus Prime toy I've ever owned and I'm glad for that. The building experience was complex enough to keep me wanting more without getting unnecessarily complex. The transformation is smooth and the amount of accessories it comes with are amazing and really add to the value of the set. The facts spread throughout the instructions are also a gem, as a long time transformers viewer it was fun to read them. 100% recommend this set to anyone who would listen. Especially if you made it to the end of my rambling review.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for display, not for Play The build was really fun. However, as the build actually transforms the joints are on the weak side. With that in mine once it was in place I don't want to pick it up and transform it more then every now and then. The set itself is amazing. My husband grew up with the older transformers animated movie so this was a must get for us. I do not regret getting this set but I am terrified about my younger children getting a hold of it as it will not hold up to them playing with it. If you are looking for a unique transformer and lego to display then this is amazing. If you want it to be able to play with then do not get this as the waist, the thumbs, and the ankle braces ( the ones with the clear red on the top of the foot) are weak points and fall apart easily.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Optimus prime I have all of the Lego creator and technic sets and I have to say this is the worst fitting together kit I’ve have ever experienced. When folded up it just flops around gaps won’t close correctly. Try to pick it up and parts start falling off. I love Lego and will keep my collection growing but in the future I wish it were more sturdy. Cool model don’t get me wrong but probably would have been better if it were technic with more pins and beams to lock together better…. just my opinion

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Disappointed Was very excited when I saw that this was going to be available but disappointed once I put it together. First off the color of the pages of the instruction booklet did not go well with the blue colored bricks. It hurt my eyes trying to figure out which blue bricks were needed. Once completed the robot was a flimsy mess. Pieces kept falling off in particular the rear tail lights that go on the feet. Once you “transform” it into the truck the pieces don’t align too well. Overall it us a fun nostalgia trip but not worth the cost.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lots of Fun, but keeps coming apart My son LOVED building this set. And he was so very excited to get it. Our only issue is that now that it's built, the body keeps separating from the legs. My kiddo is super careful, but whenever he transforms it, the legs always come apart from the body. He's had it built for a week and tried dozens of times but it breaks every time. This is not stopping him from loving the piece, but I wanted to make sure others had this expectation in case the "transforming" part of this piece was very important to them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great recreation of a classic icon LEGO did a fantastic job recreating the look and transformability of the noble Autobot leader. He is fairly posable, though there are some mods on the web to add bendable knees to the model. While most of the transforming is smooth and he is sturdy, you do need to occasionally retighten some bricks in a few places after repeated transformations. Overall very clever and aesthetic to the original cartoon and toy robot. I sincerely hope LEGO comes out with a matching Starscream. Way cooler than Megatron ever was, and who should be the rightful (wrongful?) leader of the Decepticons!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A really amazing experience! After 30+ years, my two all time favorite toys finally merge! And I Really hope there will be more to come. The build itself was the the funnest build I've had in years. The only con's I can think of are 1, I still wish all the pieces were printed & that there were no stickers. 2 the thigh stickers were show to be placed upside down. (easy fix) 3 I had to replace the 1x3 wing pieces on his back side with the 1x3 pieces on his fingers so his legs could move back without falling apart. 4 it would have been nice if he also had possible knees. Other than that, this set is just perfect.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Display, DON'T Play This is a great display piece! Do not play with it though. It looks great on the shelf but if you try to transform it the torso separates from the legs every time and if you don't have it on a table while doing so you will be rebuilding a lot of it. I was hoping it would be more like the sturdiness of the Voltron set, which I let my kids play with regularly, but instead it will be sitting on my shelf to look at only. Still, its a great set for displaying and a great throwback to my childhood!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Set!! Ignore any negative comments on this set! It’s epic! It transforms really well and looks amazing in both forms! I loved this set so much I designed and built him a trailer! Which was mega fun on top of it! Highly recommend!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for display only Overall, I purchased this set as a fan of G1 transformers characters, especially Optimus Prime. The build experience was great and the finished product looks great on display. However, if someone buys the set for a child to play with, the child will probably be discouraged and disappointed when playing with it and it keeps coming apart. The legs are extremely heavy that. They come apart from the body if you hold it by its torso. You have to transform it slowly and carefully from robot to truck and back in order to keep it together too. I cannot recommend this set for play value. If you’re a fan of the character and looking for a good set for the build, I highly recommend this set. It also looks great on the shelf.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Recommend only for fans not for play Extremely excited when I saw that this model had been released. Relatively easy build considering other builds I have completed. However, this one is among the most FRAGILE ones I have ever purchased. The connection point from the upper torso to the legs does seems a little weak in the clutch strength that is expected with Lego making moving a display piece challenging. This probably one of the only sets I would actually consider gluing together to avoid accidental destruction given that only 1 piece fell off and the picture is the result of trying to place it back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeds Expectations I was completely caught off-guard when this set released, so you can imagine how elated I was to place my order and how often I refreshed the delivery status on my phone. Once it arrived I could not believe my eyes. I had to put it together and show it off to all my buddies. Prime has become an eye-catcher on my desk at work. So far, seven of my coworkers have ordered this set after seeing the one on my desk. My goal is to get at least a dozen people in my office to order one before the holidays. I just hope the item stays in-stock till the end of the year. Thank you so much LEGO and Hasbro for making so many people happy with this set. I hope there are more entries to the Autobot or Decepticon LEGO sets in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made of STERNER STUFF I have to say LEGO really blindsided me with this set! I am a big Star Wars and Transformers fan, so each year, I wait in anticipation for new SW sets. But when I saw this set's photos, I could not believe my eyes! The set overall was a great build. It comes with a nice display piece with the iconic Autobot leader's name on it. And yes, the set TRANSFORMERS!!! Which is fantastic and not too difficult to do. Optimus is posable but limited; however, you can stand him in a few of his infamous poses. Honestly, I have no disgruntles about this set. I would love to get a G1 Megatron with him eventually, but I understand why it is unlikely we'll see him in the future. Must buy for any transformers fan! I highly recommend!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but missed the mark The build started good and somewhat enjoyed it. The struggle was when I started playing with the finished build. A few pieces tends to fall off. Either or both legs would fall. Small pieces on the crotch would fall. And most definitely Optimus prime would always break from the hip. I have to be really careful and holding the set a certain way, or else the bottom half would come off 80% of the time. Transforming to the truck and back is somewhat of a struggle since the pieces are not held together well. So I gave up playing with it and just have it on display.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from “Until the day, till all are one.” I love and hate you at the same time, Lego team. I love the fact that you’ve managed to put two things that I love, one being a hobby and the other I use too watch growing up-Legos and transformers. I hate that fact that I keep underestimating that you, as a company, think you’ll run out of ideas, or fans will. I think I’ve seen everything and then this pops up on my screen. Knocked this one out of the park…again. I didn’t have any real issues with it. The only critique I had was on the eyes of Prime. I kinda wished that there was more detail, the blue in his eyes. It signifies the Autobots as the red eyes signify the Decepticons. Other than that-great build. Keep the transformer line going. This build was knocked out of the park
