When I found out that one of these would be headed our way (I'm a 2013 Step2 Test Drive Blogger, and they sent me one for review), the reaction here at Rock Father HQ was mixed. We already had a kitchen for the girls - one that's served us well since Addie (now 4) first received it as a Christmas gift in Year Two. It's been used daily ever since, and Little Finley (15 months) had taken to it as well, and that raised questions: What would happen if a newer version of a beloved toy arrived here? Would it be viewed as a replacement? What would the girls think if we took one away... since space for two kitchens is not an option? What would set it apart?

The big answer: Contemporary features and more room for growth.

Where our first, smaller kitchen looks and feels more like a toy for toddlers, this new kitchen from Step2 expands upon it with it's size and modern features that reflect Mom and Dad's real-life kitchen. These are things that kids notice... like the recycling bin and reusable shopping bag. A lot of things say "packed with features," but I'm calling this one for actually being packed with features. Here's some of what this kitchen has to offer...

    Features:

    Microwave
    Refrigerator
    Oven (with sound)
Stove with two burners (one has lights & sound)
    Coffee Pot with "Coffee Pods"
    Recycling Bin
    Reusable "green" shopping bag
    Chalkboard
    2 Storage Bins
Sink with moving knobs and faucet
    Phone (with sound)
    Clock with movable hands
    Dish Cabinets with see-through doors
    Hooks for utensils
Accessory Kit: Pots & Pans, Dishes, Utensils, Food, Pot Holder, Salt & Pepper Grinders and more

In talking "modern" and "contemporary," the biggest hit on this kitchen is the coffee maker - undoubtedly inspired by Keurig and the K-cup system (which Daddy uses several times a day here at HQ). In addition to having a single-serving coffee pot, there's a nice area above for storage of the three included "coffee pods."

Being that we're already big Step2 fans here, and having purchased many of their products aside from the ones we get to enjoy as a part of my gig as a 2013 Test Drive Blogger, it's usually hard to decide on a final rating. But this is an exception in that my highest rating is bestowed upon products that I can't think of a way to make any better. With all the features, quality, and fun packed into the Step2 Lil' Chef's Gourmet Kitchen, there's no way for me to avoid giving this a full-on five-star rating. Rock Father-Approved!

This kitchen is a project in itself. If you're not handy with tools, and are not good with projects, then this isn't for you. This is not an easy set to put together.

Comments about Step2 Lil' Chef's Gourmet Kitchen - Pink:

I bought this Kitchen set for my 3 girls ages 9, 4 and 3 for xmas and they love it. Its very interactive and you get tons of pieces that comes with the kitchen where kids will have endless fun. Only down side was having to screw the nails into the plastic to hold the big pieces together which was quiet difficult you really have to put some muscle into it. Instruction sheet could have been better. Other than that the set is quiet worth the hard work!

Great toy kitchen set! It's durable and my daughter is still discovering different features on it. The one thing I would recommend is to get some extra "groceries" to go with it.

When I saw the Lil Chef Gourmet Kitchen, I knew I had to get it for my curious 2.4 year old granddaughter. She loves it!! When she gets up in the morning, the first thing she wants to do is to cook. I love the realistic sounds the stove makes. The cons are length of time, and the instructions were had to find. There was no indication that instructions were included. Also, you have to search the sheets for the continuation of the instructions. My husband and I thought all we had to do was just snap it into place. When it started falling apart, we knew there had to be instructions somewhere. When we found the instruction booklet, which was in the bag with the dishes, we had to put it together all over again this time inserting the screws. It took us over three hours.

The kitchen is just what I expected when I ordered it. It was pretty easy to assemble and my daughter loves it. My only complaint would be that the toy requires three 1.5 volt disc-shaped batteries, which are difficult to find. I would recommend that the manufacturer go with a more readily available type battery. Otherwise this is a great toy!

My daughter loves this kitchen. I also love it, and it has every thing a child can dream of. However, not so much for the parents. There wasn't pre made screw holes, and the instructions were terrible. It took me a long time just to figure out which piece the picture was showing. Plus, the oven door doesn't close all of the way. The after results of this kitchen were great, and I am satisfied.

My daughter loves this kitchen! We purchased this as a Christmas gift for her at 17 months and she was able to enjoy it right away. I would suggest to purchase after the child is able to walk on their own. It is on the light side and could possibly tip over if child pulls or pushes. We keep it against a wall which helps. There is a lot of storage and comes with a nice amount of excesories but purchased a few extra food sets

I bought this for my 17-month-old for her Christmas present. My daughter likes to try to cook like adults do, so I am hoping she will love this kitchen set. It's a very pretty set.

I will add more to my review when I get this thing opened up after Christmas.

I bought this set for my 2 yr old granddaughter's birthday and she loves it. Like another person said, my granddaughter also uses the recycle bin as a step stool to reach everything. She will be able to grow into this.

It wasn't difficult to put together and the directions were easy to follow.

I would totally recommend this set.

I purchased this kitchen for my two year old. I had no problem with assembly, thought the assembly instructions were clear enough as were the sticker instructions. We have had this kitchen six months now and it still looks almost brand new (except a sticker and crayon addition.) The kitchen is very durable. My daughter was too short to reach the microwave on the top so she would take the recycling bin, turn it upside down and use it as a step. It never caved in under her 25 pound weight. The only two issues I have are, like other reviewers have suggested, the oven door can stick a little bit but my daughter had no problem figuring it out, and the telephone isn't very loud. This has not stopped my daughter from spending a lot of time boiling her corn, making yogurt and coffee. I am very happy with this purchase and the price point. I only have one child, but I could easily see this kitchen lasting several years and through several children.
