Mind-blowing set

By MichaelCh

from Gdańsk

Comments about LEGO Technic Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245 (42043):

Back in the late 80's/ early 90's when I was a little kid I had a few Technic sets and I really enjoyed putting them together. Now I have a little son who is super into all sorts of vehicles, so I decided to buy this set to stroll down the memory lane and see what it's like to build a modern Technic set, also knowing that my son will have something super cool to play with once I am done with it. The building process was very rewarding (especially putting together the engine, gearbox and steering), but also laborious at times (piping). It took me about 16h, and I am a bit surprised by how long it actually took me to finish it. All in all I enjoyed building this model a lot, and towards the end I was actually slightly disappointed it was going to finish soon. Some people complain about instructions not being clear - personally I think that LEGO did a sterling job of showing across nearly 500 pages (yup) how to assemble this truck. The end effect? This model is just phenomenal. It is humongous, so despite the price I think it represents a good value for money, and also it really looks very similar to the real-life Mercedes Arocs truck. Power and pneumatics functions are great, although I noticed that even though initially crane turntable was moving steadily and smoothly, over time movement started getting erratic (not sure if it is down to batteries wearing down, my son's antics with it or piping slightly getting in the way despite the correct laying). Hand-of-God steering could be better too, as the knob keeps falling off when you try to move the model on a rough surface holding it. Overall it is an epic set, and I am sure it is going down as one of the most iconic Technic sets ever released. I was thinking about buying it for a few months, as I had never spent so much on a LEGO set before, but in the end I decided to go for it and I am so glad I did. So if you are not sure if to get it - snap it fast, it's well worth it and might not be around for much longer

Out of my entire Technic collection, this is the totally best! Everything about it is so good! It is fun to build and really recommend it, you do need a little patience to build it, actually, no patience required! It was too fun to build!

Comments about LEGO Technic Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245 (42043):

Amazing set very fun to play around with only thing i don't like is the steering is a little flimsy and when you drive it over something the wheels turn but good news is that if you wish to add power functions what i suggest is taking out the "engine" and the drive train and you can put a receiver or two where the "engine" was and a XL motor at the back of the truck with very simple modifications

Awesome set

Comments about LEGO Technic Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245 (42043):

I loved this build. It was the most challenging lego build I've had, but found it so rewarding. I love building technic gearboxes, and this one blew my mind. The torque in those little motors impressed me, until this set i had been using a couple of motors from the 90s and they've gone a bit weak. The most challenging part of the build was the pneumatic arm, although I feel this was made more challenging from having slightly poor instructions. The pneumatic arm moves slightly slow in reaction to the controls, but I guess this is a small gripe as it is very playable. I very much enjoy the action of the piston on in the engine block (I had been looking forward to adding these parts to my collection). I am more than happy with the finished look of the project, it is very well designed and does not at all look skeletal like other technic sets can. The front grille is just lovely. One big gripe I have is that there were three pieces missing, which were small and not common and I was lucky were in my collection. Overall a brilliantly designed and beautifully crafted set with much playability.

Comments about LEGO Technic Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245 (42043):

This took me 3ish days broken up into several hours each evening while balancing work and family time. Overall a great model. Not a big fan of the steering mechanism as it takes a lot of twist to turn the front wheels wheels. Not the best design at all. I wish the power functions ran the outriggers but not a deal. Other than that, everything works great and is easy enough for my kids to play with. This is physically biggest set i have built. I have the blue crawler crane and also the 10 wheeled extendable boom crane (Mobile Crane MKII). That is a good steering system.

Perfect pneumatics, not so perfect Power Functions

By Jeep2

Comments about LEGO Technic Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245 (42043):

I got this for my birthday. I was very happy because at the time it was the largest Lego technic set! The build wasn't so hard, actually. It is also very smart once it has been built. Pros -The pneumatic system is amazing! I really like seeing the crane go up and down and they operate like real Scania/Mercedes trick cranes! -The container is very large. It can fit most of your blocks in there, even the Hydroplane Racer! -There is a real Mercedes star on the plate. No sticker. Cons -None of my Power Functions work. I can at least pull out the outriggers but nothing else. Could someone please say in their review how to operate it properly? -The instructions were a bit unclear to me in bag 4. -My Mercedes star is wonky. I don't see how It can be straight... I actually broke the steering, which was annoying, but it is a good set. If you want pneumatics, get this over the frustrating Volvo EW160E.

Great build, minor quibble

Comments about LEGO Technic Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245 (42043):

This is thus far a great build. I am a little over halfway through it right now, having just attached the tires and a few other parts. The minor quibble though, is about those tires. The instructions have you just putting the two rear tires right next to each other. This leads to the rear tires touching each other. That, as anyone with any trucking or CDL experience knows, is a HUGE no-no. A small spacer (the flat type used on the front tires to put the hubcap at a slight remove from the wheel) solves this. Other than that minor quibble, this has thus far been a rather entertaining build. Lots of steps, lots of parts, and an ingenious steering mechanism.

Comments about LEGO Technic Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245 (42043):

I was looking to buy my grandson something for Christmas and started looking at Lego when I came across the Mercedes 42043 lorry. I wasn’t aware that Lego made this type of model and was immediately impressed. Not having made a Lego kit before and not knowing what to buy myself for Christmas I decided to treat myself. And I wasn’t disappointed. Once I got used to the manual and I got started it became very addictive but it still took me around 50 hours to build. Great fun and all the parts fitted well, the only draw - back being that there were a few bits missing and the time taken to get them sent from Denmark. However the support team at Lego were extremely friendly and helpful. Would recommend this to anybody who enjoys building kits. The best advice I would give to anybody building this kit is ‘don’t rush’ for if you get it wrong in the early stages it will be difficult to correct later

Just like the real thing, only smaller (sort-of)

Comments about LEGO Technic Mercedes-Benz Arocs 3245 (42043):

Hands-down, one of the largest, most detailed, most realistic LEGO Technic vehicles I’ve ever assembled. It's clear that lot of attention to detail went into creating this model. The set has plenty of various moving parts to enjoy: moving engine pistons, dump bed (with locking tailgate â€" nice touch!), tilting cab, fully-functional clamshell arm, 8-wheel suspension, 4-wheel steering, and stabilizers. I’m happy to see the return to more and improved pneumatics! The realistic wheel chocks were a happy surprise. Do be careful how you “threadâ€ the pneumatic tubes in the clamshell arm base…it pays to be neat with how you route them. PROS: -Plenty of moving parts -Pre-cut pneumatic hoses -Realistic design and functionality -HOURS of building fun CONS: -No non-motorized building option -Loud motor (linear actuator is abnormally loud when the clutch kicks-in, unlike when the clutch kicks in for the other motorized functions) -Instructions could benefit from a few more close-up detail shots, especially when it’s time to thread the pneumatic tubes into the clamshell arm base -Steering seems like it’s under stress -Pneumatic pump seems undersized (takes a while to get things moving) SUGGESTIONS: -Make the dump bed pneumatic-powered -Ditch the compressor and use a manual pump for the pneumatics (they’re much more responsive and smoother-acting when I bypassed the compressor with a spare manual pump I had lying around)
