Ever since I saw The Empire Strikes Back in 1980 (or thereabouts) I have wanted to build the ISS Executor. Ever since LEGO started their Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series back in 1999, I have wished for the ISS Executor. Finally, after 12 years of waiting, it came out. I had forgotten to regularly check the product listings, so it had actually been out for a couple of months when I discovered it. I bought it without hesitation. The building process was genuinely fascinating and I found the brick-engineering often both clever and impressive. Until I realised the ship had no keel and the iconic main landing bay was, to put it politely, found lacking. Don't get me wrong, it looks gorgeous when viewed above the horizontal plane, but in the movies, in the first complete reveal of the ISS Executor, we see that mesmerising landing bay and hobbyists have, over the years re-created it in their LEGO fan models. Therefore I was shocked to see the frankly lame representation of it in this product. Because when you, an ISS Executor fan, have a model of the ship, you want to be able to raise it above your head and shout, "Look, they got the main landing bay and all!" This ship, it doesn't have a keel either and don't even get me started on the wrong colour of the engines. Also, since this is an Ultimate Collector Series product, I cannot understand the need to make it a "toy", with the minifigures and the nice-looking, but ill-concieved "hidden" bridge. Making all the figures fit inside so that they are standing when the roof is in place is *impossible*, and this ruins the product both as a model (the bridge is off-scale) and as a functional toy. LEGO Star Wars figures in general are great, but in an Ultimate Collector Series product *only* if they are in-scale with the model. All the time and money spent on engineering the bridge would have been better spent on the main landing bay and the keel. And why is there a Clone Trooper on the box cover? Wrong trilogy! All these things have been eating me for months and I hope that finally taking the time to write a review will give me some peace. This all said, I still love my LEGO ISS Executor. It's not exactly what I had hoped, but it's still bigger than that Japanese model and comes with a mini (ordinary) Star Destroyer that is just too cute to hate. Bottom line: LEGO, if you ever want me to buy another Ultimate Collector Series product, leave the off-scale portions out. I also have a wish: the ISS Eclipse. Now *that* ship is all about the keel and the only ship in the Star Wars Universe mightier than the ISS Executor.

I have just completed building this set and I must say that the Lego Corporation has done a fantastic job with regards to the Super Star Destroyer. Whether you are an avid collector or general consumer, you will greatly love and appreciate this set. This 50" behemoth brings Lego build bragging rights to a whole other level of awesome. I must say I am very impressed with the inclusion of a cockpit and minifigures to this 16+ scale model. It in no way takes away from the "exclusive-ness" or Ultimate Collection of the ship, nor does it detract from the fantastic scale modeling of the Star Destroyer. I must say this is Marketing genius. Being a Marketing major I can understand and appreciate these added things to a collector set. It allows a larger audience to be drawn to this set and therefore make more $$ while appealing to more people. Well done Lego Marketing Department. Also, to everyone complaining about no Bobba Fett: He is already in the Slave I, he doesn't HAVE to be in this set. The idea is for people to buy more products and that is why he isn't included, so you can buy the set that DOES have him. The fact that this set is so long (the longest set ever sold to the public) already makes it a reason to buy. The bragging rights among friends in what you have accomplished, even at my age, is a testament to how iconic Lego is. A great feature about the Super Star Destroyer is that it is a modular build. There is one giant spiral bound instruction booklet, but the bags and instructions are seperated 1-7. This makes organization and cooperative building extremely easy. I was able to build with my younger siblings with ease because we were able to divide up the instructions. I highly suggest this set for anyone who wants a challenge, bragging rights, and one great collection item. Fantastic work Lego, job well done. -Tripper

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Super Star Destroyer (10221):

I know a lot of people have said they are not happy with this set due to the lack of play value. This is very true, but this set is meant to be a collector's item for display(hence why it is an UCS set). It is not something that one would buy for a younger child hoping to give them a great play set. That being said I absolutely love the Super Star Destroyer! This was my first UCS set and I found that it offered a nice challenging build and not to mention it is a massive 4ft long! It is hard to tell how big it really is from pictures. It now resides as the center piece of my Lego Star Wars collection. The price is very high, but in my opinion worth every penny. If you can find it buy it! (I think it is now retired?)

      Superb Destroyer!

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Super Star Destroyer (10221):

I purchased this as a returning Lego fan! My Nephew is growing up and loving Lego, just as I did! It was only visiting Lego Windsor and seeing the model that made me WANT this set! Please be aware its a set that is not to be played with... this is a display set, an investment piece! Please make sure you have space, such as a side table as this thing is huge!!! Building the set was such fantastic fun! At times a little repetitive, but worth it!! The detail in terms of the build of the models internal 'skeleton' is equal as to the final design! I recommend this to any adult builder! Purely a fantastic and enjoyable build!! Expensive, but worth it!

Not Quite the Star of the Show....

      By DrCockroach

      from Melbourne

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Super Star Destroyer (10221):

In general, this was a good set to build and very detailed on the exterior. It would be a purchase to think about for any Star Wars fan and older Lego builders. This would not be for younger children, as it contains certain elements which were flimsy to put together or difficult to clip into place. It also has many tiny elements which could be knocked off when working on other parts. Impressive when completed, not to mention grand in size and scale, this is not your average Lego Star Wars set, but doesn't quite reach the mark of other sets produced like it. The standout greats about set 10221 are as follows: 1-It is very detailed, using studs, plates, bricks and clips - besides many others - to create intricate movie-like features. This adds ti its impressive grandeur when complete and displayed. 2-The size is nice, as it stands out from any other set produced. At one 124.4 cm long, it is not likely that another set like it will be produced, not to this scale. This is also realistic to the films when displayed alongside previous Star Destroyer sets, as it should be imposing. 3-The build is generally well executed, with components of the ship built in sections, sometimes added in at later points. There are seven sets of bags which break it up into workable chunks. The stands are built separately, which is useful for standing the model on or adding on at the finish. 4-The mini-figures are a nice addition, as well as the outfitted bridge and detail. You get three unique mini-figures (Admiral Piett, Dengar and IG-88's printed head) which is a welcome feature in a set otherwise devoted to display. The mini Star Destroyer adds to the play and display effect. Some issues with the set are as follows: 1-While being great as a display piece, the enormous size impairs the ability to move the set without breaking our dislodging an element. 2-The set has many noticeable gaps in the hull, such as at the front of the dagger shape and in the corners of the extension at the rear. From certain angles you can see the framework inside. At some areas you can see brightly coloured red or sand pieces sticking through. 3-The bottom of the ship is flat, which doesn't detract, but lacks some faith to the films. As with previous Star Destroyer sets it would have been great to have slanted boards on the bottom or at the edges. 4-The stands upon which the set stand are rather spindly and can wobble somewhat when prodded or knocked by accident. This can be troublesome depending on what level the set is displayed. Sometimes, tiny elements on top might loosen and fall off the ship. Overall, this was a satisfying purchase, worthy of any older or advanced Star Wars and Lego fan. The end result is worth the money. However, the difficulty in playing with it, and some evident structural and aesthetic flaws, compromise the overall satisfaction. It falls just short of other Star Wars collector's sets. A buy worth making, just not the top of the pyramid.

      Challenging and impressive

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Super Star Destroyer (10221):

Regardless of the theme, I will buy any Lego set with a piece count above 3000. This is an interesting set. Lots and lots of gray pieces. Lots. But, that's the way it has to be given the subject matter. Not a toy, a display piece for Star Wars fans. Challenging build, but a fun build. This thing really is massive. I hope you a a deep and wide fireplace mantle you can dedicate to the finished product.

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Super Star Destroyer (10221):

This is my favorite set that I have by far. It is MASSIVE and is detailed on every part. When people walk into my room they run strait over to it to see it. Of course a set like this is not going to be great for playability but the inside is really cool and it is fun to pick it up by the stand and fly it around the house blaring the imperial march. This is defiantly one of the best set for display. The only on better would probably be the USC death star 2.

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Super Star Destroyer (10221):

When I first saw how many bags of Legos was in the first of three boxes, I began to wonder what I may have gotten myself into, as it seemed to be an overwhelming amount of pieces. I found it easier and actually quicker if I just dumped the bags out and separated the parts. The build was actually quite easy, and I did not find anything troublesome. the completed model is very sturdy and can easily be picked up and moved around without fear of anything coming apart. I thought the bridge scene area for the mini figs just really does not fit on this model, kids cannot play with this, and I don't see anyone displaying this with the mini figs on it, it just ruins the scale. I did grow very annoyed with the unnecessarily large instruction book, it is so large and cumbersome you really need a separate table just to place it on, if you place it so only one page is showing, turning the page without ripping it or knocking a hundred legos off of your workspace, becomes very challenging, granted it does offer very good and easy to follow illustrations. My only other complaint is, ..where am I going to put this thing?

As many have said, there is not a lot of playability with this set, but lets be real... This is meant to be a model. A challenge? A Sunday afternoon build? A feat of Lego strength? Pick your choice or define your own. This set is worth it. This build was more lengthy than challenging.
