We purchased two gates (for the infant and one year-old rooms) in our group child care center and preschool. We did not install one side of the foot actuating device to permit us to close the door and keep the gate in position. This gives us flexibility to isolate the room from noises from adjacent rooms when needed. I had to insert flat washers as spacers on the side where the foot pedal was not installed to provide a solid fit for the actuator on the outer side, but that was a simple modification.
The gates work very well, and the self closing mechanism is a plus. I would recommend the manufacturer review this modification option from a long term safety and reliability standpoint, and if they agree the modification does not compromise the integrity of the unit, that they include directions to modify the foot pedal opening device as outlined above (and also incude mounting cups that can be screwed into the door jambs to provide more stability to the adjustable mounting hardware). The best gate we've tried to date!

We bought two of these gates and have had them up for about a month. No major problems with them yet but I also think it too soon to tell! One of my big complaints is that the handle for opening the gate doesn't always work, the sides have to be tightened to the exact right length for it to work or you have to jiggle it a good bit to open. The same with the foot pedal, you usually have to nudge it open with your hand. The reason we had trouble getting that exact right tightness is because one is installed against a banister and the other in a door frame that changes from tile to hard wood (there's a lip on the floor). I was glad the gate worked in these openings even with the somewhat challenging circumstances.
Only other issue is that it only auto closes on one side. I like that the color is different from most other gates. It was easy to install though and looks nice.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Set up was a breeze. Sturdy construction. The foot petal needs a decent amount of weight to open the gate but works very well and swings wide open for easy entry/exit when your hands are full. Alternatively, you can use the hand-latch to come and go when it's more convenient. Very satisfied with this product!
