To be able to understand why LEGO has been successful for so long, just look to the name. LEGO originally got its name from founder Ole Kirk Christiansen who combed the Danish words "Leg Got" which means "play well". He later realized that LEGO in Latin translates to "I put together." The LEGO set became a standard of creative play for children worldwide, unlocking the creativity to build vehicles, buildings, cities and more. LEGO currently produces about 20 billion LEGO bricks a year and has sold over 400 billion LEGOs in their history -- enough for every person on the planet to have over 60 LEGOs each!

I just finished building this set, and really enjoyed the actual construction of it which I did with the assistance of a novice (possibly first time) LEGO builder, and we had no real issues putting it together. I love the detail that went into the design at this scale, and the overall impression is very good and relatively sturdy - The large sections attach to each other extremely well. I had the chance to see one of the models used in the filming of the original trilogy films and I was absolutely floored by how much detail the LEGO designer was able to accommodate in the finished product. Admittedly, there are a few things to keep in mind with this model. As with most of the UCS models, due to the size it should be thought of as a display model first and foremost, and manhandled relatively infrequently. This is a collector's piece and the price reflects that - a price that I do not regret paying. Certain pieces of the kit can fall off if not handled with care. These include: * The four wing pieces on the front of the 'bottom' gun pod * The gold guns on the front of the cockpit * The binoculars on the tips of the S-Foils * The curved pieces on the tips of the S-Foils, below the lasers The cone on the back of the cockpit is designed poorly as well, and is prone to fall off extremely easily as it was designed, however a simple rethink of this piece drastically increases the strength of the attachment point. Simply remove the 2x2x1/3 grey cylinder piece, and re-attach it to the top of the tan stem, on the short bit of the black stem, then put the black 3x3 cone on upside down. This allows the stem to reach further into the large grey cone. I've attached pictures to this review as a visual guide. Overall then, this is an excellent model for any collector or mature fan of LEGO and/or Star Wars, and I would recommend it to those individuals without hesitation.

I have to say I thought I would be able to touch this lego but it pretty much falls apart every time I lay a finger on it. I actually thought it would have at least a small amount of structural integrity and i was barely right. I was very disappointed when I tried to move a wing to landing position and that wing fell off. It happened maybe 5 times while i was building it, so I tried to put it back on. but when i did, the other wing fell off and then the cockpit fell off as well and smashed on the ground so I was left with the main wing in my hand. I suggest this to people who love getting their lego demolished or expert lego builders who have superglue in their house.

Gets an undeserved bad rap!

Comments about LEGO Star Wars B-Wing Starfighter (10227):

I just wanted to add another review that expresses the opinion that this model is not particularly fragile. It really sort of puzzles me how others are having so many issues. I assembled it, placed it on the stand, and even take it off to clean/look at occasionally, and the only parts I have ever knocked off are the tiny guns on the front of the cockpit. My only complaint would be that the stand is a little wobbly. Great looking model!

I love it but its fragile...

Comments about LEGO Star Wars B-Wing Starfighter (10227):

Overall I really loved building this set until I came to the part where I had to put the B-Wing on the stand. First off I realised that when I put the first wing on the B-Wing it kind of broke off. I shrugged and continued building when I had to put on the second wing at the bottom. After that both of the wings broke off...After a lot of effort i carefully lifted the fighter and tried to put it on the stand...only to realise that the B-Wing in the final image at the manual was inverted from the rest of the instructions manual. So I basically built the fighter the wrong way. I decided to rebuild it completely since I thought I must have done an error. The next day I tried again but the wings broke off again! I was really frustrated since it took a lot of time for me to build it again. My friends also have this set and they also had the same problem. Somehow one of them actually finished it and had it on the stand! I overall find it fun to build with the colorful inside of the wings but it would be great if LEGO would make a new version that is a bit cheaper and more sturdy. Otherwise I love this set! ;)

Too hard to handle

Comments about LEGO Star Wars B-Wing Starfighter (10227):

I want to start this by saying I am a huge lego fan but this set falls apart if you look at it too hard. I would love to get it on the stand as suggested so it won't fall apart but it wont stay together long enough. I would say buyer beware but its retired...

Comments about LEGO Star Wars B-Wing Starfighter (10227):

This was only my second UCS set I had purchased (the first being my general grevious) and I was very satisfied. The set looks Gorgeous!!! on display, and is one of my favorite sets (just behind the tantive 4). I just wish it would have come with a mini b-wing so you could compare the sizes, or maybe an b-wing pilot. I hope lego comes out with a regular sized b-wing (we haven't seen one since 2006)

Massively underrated

By Snowgoat

from Cardiff

Comments about LEGO Star Wars B-Wing Starfighter (10227):

I was on the fence about this ship having seen a few lukewarm reviews and especially given the price was a lot higher than it probably should have been. When I saw it discounted at my local Lego shop I jumped on it and am so glad I did. It’s a nice build and the finished ship is actually awesome when you handle it yourself (having seen the ship built in a shop window it didn’t blow me away initially â€" unlike the Super Star Destroyer, which single-handedly got me back into Lego). It’s one of the more obscure ships from the trilogy, but has a real cult following amongst Star Wars geeks and I have to say I far prefer this to the new X-Wing model. As for the accusations about it being flimsy â€" the only flimsy section I could notice is at the back of the cockpit â€" and it’s not as if it falls off when it’s on display (and can easily be strengthened if desired). Yes, the set is probably over-priced at GBP160 (as all the UCS Star Wars sets are in the UK â€" especially when compared to the US), but once it’s discontinued you’ll regret you didn’t get one â€" especially when they’ll be going for GBP300 in a couple of years’ time on ebay!

Great Build, But Don't Take It Off the Stand

By Captjr

from Calabash

Comments about LEGO Star Wars B-Wing Starfighter (10227):

This was my first "large" LEGO building project and was very satisfied with the experience. There were, however some glitches. Some pieces do not fit together perfectly leaving gaps, engine at back of cockpit has flanges that tend to fall off easily, and once the model is built and put on the stand, DO NOT MOVE IT FOR ANY REASON!! I did and spent about 5 hours with the instructions redoing the pieces that came off. I love LEGO'S as a natural extension of my model building days as a kid - but I am not so sure that LEGO should not sell a glue for those of us who build and don't want to play with these larger, unstable kits.

The B-Wing done right

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about LEGO Star Wars B-Wing Starfighter (10227):

Wow, what a set. I must say I'm very glad to see the B-Wing given the Ultimate Collector's Series treatment. It's not nearly as well known as say, the X-Wing, or the TIE Fighter and really only existed in the X-Wing game series, and a few short moments from the un-tampered-with Return of the Jedi film. To see it so faithfully reproduced is wonderful, from the independently rotating cockpit pod, to the folding wings. The level of detail is amazing, and shows great creativity on the part of the designer of this set. The set is massive, so it limits the playability factor by quite a bit. It's got to be at least 5 lbs, and it's 26" long (cockpit to cannon pod) and 15" wide (wingtip to wingtip). I'm 30 years old, and over 6 foot tall, and I find it huge, so I can't really imagine a kid playing with one of these. It's a long (took me the better part of a day off), decently challenging build constructed in four sections: the cockpit module, the engine block, the main wing, and the two folding wings. The three major body sections are connected to each other with I believe six technic pins each, and the wings are attached with rounded, toothed technic joints which allows them to rotate. I believe it would be sturdy enough to hang off the ceiling, given enough attachment points to spread the load. It does come with a nice stand that's a little bit wobbly, but if it's just resting there it's sturdy enough. As my favorite starfighter from the Star Wars universe, having this B-Wing in this highly detailed form is just great. It's not for everyone, though. It can't really be played with, it doesn't have any minifigures, and it's on the expensive side. Those factors don't preclude me from rating it a five overall, with the play factor and value factor reduced according to my thoughts on those detailed above. If you're a collector and Star Wars nerd, grab one of these while you still can.

Great addition to the UCS series

By Nights

from Sydney

Comments about LEGO Star Wars B-Wing Starfighter (10227):

Really interesting lego set. I read a lot of reviews before purchasing, and although there seemed to be a lot of concern regarding the stability of the set, I haven't had any issues. It's clearly not a play set (although it does have some "swooshability" and the movable cockpit and foldable wings are great) and it looks fantastic on it's stand. Overall, not a difficult build - took me about 6 hours going at a leisurely pace, and there were some interesting techniques used particularly around the cockpit. The build was a little repetitive at times but that's to be expected with most starship type builds. I would definitely recommend the set to both keen Star Wars lego fans and also UCS collectors. My only reservation is with regards to value; the cost, particularly for Australians, is on the high side.
