Comments about K'NEX Building Set - Atomic Coaster:

I purchased the K'nex Atomic Coaster for my son who has a ton of patience and enjoys building and problem-solving. He has generally enjoyed building sets, and I'm patient and engineering-minded. I thought this would be a fun challenge for us to tackle together.

Unfortunately, both his patience and mine were sorely tested by this product. According to the box, there are 1255 pieces. We had about 1260 -- there were extras of some pieces, but unfortunately, a couple of pieces were missing as well. (Just sorting through and counting the pieces prior to construction took well over an hour.) I managed to fabricate replacements for missing pieces, and we began assembly.

The instructions here are pretty painfully difficult to follow. A typical contruction step (and there are 83 of them) might involve 15-20 pieces to be connected in ways that can be difficult to ascertain from the too-small illustrations. Frustrating.

We finally finished (about 9 hours after opening the box,) and at first my son and his brothers were delighted. This was short-lived, however. After they played with the coaster for an hour or so it is no longer functional. Several of the plastic connectors (especially those that support the track) wear down after use and fail to remain clamped. (A couple of these pieces are specialized and can't be "switched out" with a similar piece from elsewhere in the set.)

The pieces are simply flimsy and cheap, and so long hours of difficult assembly are "rewarded" with a relatively short play window before the set is ready for the junk pile. I'm sorry I purchased this, and my son is disappointed that our project is already "broken."
