The Safety 1st Lift, Lock & Swing Security Gate has a unique two-in-one design which allows it to be used in two different modes to accommodate the needs of your family. In either mode, the gate helps keep your baby in child-friendly areas. Mount it at the top of the stairs for maximum security as a hardware swing gate or place it in a doorway as a pressure-mounted security gate that is easy to move out of the way when not needed. For easy operation, the gate features a complete-control top handle that lets you lock, release, and adjust as needed. It also features a SecureTech® indicator that lets you know that the gate is securely locked in place.

Product Highlights

  • You can easily see when it is securely locked with the SecureTech® indicator
  • Locks, releases and adjusts as needed with the handle along the top
  • Two-in-one design allows pressure-mounting that is easily moved or a hardware swing-style mount that doesn't budge

Easy to use
The gate helps keep your little one in child-friendly areas for safety and your peace of mind. The SecureTech® indicator helps you know that the gate is locked in place, and the top handle easily locks, releases and adjusts the gate as necessary.

We LOVE this gate - we have the hardware mounted in one doorway so it's easy to swing and walk through most of the time, and we can always take it out of the hardware and pressure-mount it elsewhere as needed. Wonderfully versatile. HOWEVER, when you first get the gate home, the instructions are between the panels and you don't know how to get the panels apart to get the instructions without the instructions!! I ended up having to pull the instructions to shreds, wiggle them through a hole, and then piece them back together. NOT SMART, Safety-1st! HOW TO OPEN THE GATE: Slide the button on TOP of the handle back and lift the handle until it's level with the unlock indicator. Then press the button on the side of the handle, WHILE sliding the top button over and lifting until the handle is all the way up. Now you should be able to expand the gate. Once you get it down, this is an absolutely fabulous product.

I used this gate at the top of stairs. It worked well for less than a year. The gate wasn't staying in it's lock position and was making a different noise. I noticed the plastic teeth that are in between gate panels were worn down and flatten. These teeth are what hold the gate in it's locked and safe position. At this point all that is needed is a good push and the gate will swing open. I now know this gate is not for long-term use in a high traffic area.

Comments about Safety 1st 30-42 inch Lift, Lock and Swing Security Gate:

I also don't understand the negative reviews other than maybe it was being used improperly for the desired area. I used wall mount in kitchen doorway and it worked like a charm. Tried more expensive pressure mount gates that just fell over. Granted it requires some precision and patience to get it installed correctly the first time but I have since moved and had it installed in minutes. Seriously, once wall mounted it is SECURE! Swings in and out precisely also. Would recommend this, at least try it and return if it doesn't suit your needs

I just needed a replacement gate to keep baby out of the dining room. I didn't need anything fancy or complicated. Not the case....Maybe if I had 4 arms to push, pull and press I could get this thing to stay in the walkway between the two rooms. It's hard to set it's position and have it stay. This is especially difficult if a crawling baby is at your feet. Waste of money!

Too difficult to use. You shouldn't get a workout trying to open and close a gate. Would never recommend.

Comments about Safety 1st 30-42 inch Lift, Lock and Swing Security Gate:

One positive thing I can say about this gate is that it has quite a sturdy build. When it is engaged, especially if it's installed with the included hardware, it can withstand basically anything baby can throw it's way.

That's where the good points end, though. If you buy this product, you will be frustrated. You will read the instructions again and again thinking that there's got to be some key trick to expanding and collapsing the gate easily, but there's simply not.

This gate includes two main mechanisms: a button which must be pressed in in order to expand or shrink the gate width and a handle which engages/disengages the suction with locks/unlocks the gate. Neither of these mechanisms work well. Possibly, when these features where initially engineered, they worked great, but since this is a mass-produced plastic product, there must be slight variances which render the mechanisms virtually unusable.

Using the button to expand/shrink the gate seems simple enough on paper. You press the button in when you want to change the width of the gate. When the button pops back out, the gate width is locked. Unfortunately, in reality, the button hardly ever works. Sometimes, you'll press the button and the gate will slide in and out easily. Other times it will simply refuse to budge. No rhyme or reason to it; it's just unpredictable.

The handle which locks/unlocks the gate using suction is equally as flakey. On a good day, I'm able to lock the gate by pressing down using all my body weight. On a not-so-good day, I literally have to pound on the handle to get it to lock. VERY frustrating!

In conclusion, I can't recommend this gate. Safety 1st should definitely re-evaluate the design of this gate from the ground up for the next revision!

Comments about Safety 1st 30-42 inch Lift, Lock and Swing Security Gate:

I'm very surprised at all the poor reviews of this gate. I have 4 children, ranging from adult to 4 yrs and have had MANY inferior safety gates in the past. I have had this gate in place for 3 years and love it. It was hard to open and close for about a week or 2, but was smooth after. The instructions were online so I didn't have any issue with that. We have ours mounted for pretty permanent use. I prefer the safety of the product to the aesthetic value, so drilling holes was not an issue. This has stood up to tons of abuse from rowdy preschoolers to middle school age nerf fights to dogs trying to rush through the gate. I'm actually buying another because I was told they are discontinuing it and I want to have a backup. The only thing that could beat this is a half door which would be $$$.
