I was wishing for the same version of Clue that I played back in the 70s and 80s . . . well, I know that they do update it from time to time and that particular old version isn't available anymore. That being said, this version plays essentially the same as the old one--despite some of the rooms being changed (no more conservatory, lounge, library, study, etc.) The suspects all look young and hip now and are called only by their colors--i.e. "Mustard" instead of "Colonel Mustard." But the gameplay is the same and I really like the artwork on the board. A bonus is the backside of the board with the "boardwalk" version, though I still like the original better. Thankfully the weapon tokens are still made out of metal. Some things shouldn't change.

How did they mess it up so bad?

I purchased this game thinking it was the same as the one I enjoyed in my youth. I couldn't have been more wrong.

Remember Colonel Mustard? Professor Plum? The Conservatory? The Revolver?

Yeah well forget that. They've made it 'new and improved' so they've turned all the characters into hip hopping 20-somethings with a color fetish, they've updated and renamed all the rooms, turning the mansion into a crib of the rich and famous, and added new rooms to the flip side for a 'boardwalk experiance'... They've renamed at least one of the weapons on all the documentation.... Pistol...

So they changed and 'made relevant' to a new generation an old game.... Great... my kids liked the movie clue and the old game and these 'improvements' were anything but, they just created confusion and disappointment.

And to top it off, the way they divide the floors and the board walk boards for you to count out your move? Yeah well they even messed that up as each brick is 2 by 1 squares set up in an overlapping pattern. You have to explain to your kids that one brick going sideways is two moves and going forward/back is just one, and you can't go diagnal even though if you look at the wide blocks it looks like the only way you can go forward is diagnal... I gave up and took a sharpie to the board and made actual boxes.

In short, don't buy this version unless you are already accustom to the 'improvements'.

            Comments about Hasbro 1001119 Clue:

My initial intent with this game was to develop critical thinking skills in younger children, however it's slow moving and not appropriate for my age group. Actually going through the game once, i realized it really goes against my own personal principles. I am from a community and a people who have an everyday reality with violence, so the weapons and figuring out someone's demise left a nauseous feeling in my stomach.
