This is a Christmas gift for a 4 yr. old.
The construction is of wood and very durable.
Things that we've ordered in the past that are Melissa & Doug are a little bit more expensive than others brands (if there are any) but the construction is alway better and the item is always well received. It's worth the little bit more.

This is a nice learning toy. Great to use to promote concentration. I am not sure why several reviewers are giving the product a lower rating because their child gets frustrated with the blocks not staying in place...that isn't a good reason to lower the rating of the product as it never implies that the blocks will stay. If anything the fact that they slide easily will help further the childs concentration and small motor skills. If you feel as though your child will get frustrated easily perhaps buy the chunky pattern block and board set made by melissa and doug. That one is specifically made for younger children.

My 3 yr. old recently got this toy for his bday and loves it. He doesn't use it for making the patterns on the boards yet but he spends a lot of time sorting the blocks, stacking them, and making different shapes out of them. I can see us getting use out of this product for a long time. It's a very good toy.

[...] We own a few Melissa & Doug pieces and they all have some kind of lid and this one doesn't and it should with SO MANY pieces. We bought another item that just keeps falling apart and doesnt stay put. Great product and concept but for the price that Melissa & Doug products are, they need to work on concealing so many pieces and better construction

We got this for our 4 year old and she doesn't seem to be interested. The pieces move around very easily and that seems to be very frustrating for her. It would of been nice is there was an indentation, magnet or something that would hold the pieces in place. I say that "Not Sure Yet" because my child can be funny, one month she won't play with something and maybe a month later or year later it becomes her favorite toy.
Ultimately, the toy can be frustrating for a prescholer who is trying to accomplish something and feel good about it.

This is a fun activity but some of the wooden pieces were bent. It looked like they had been stored in a moist environment.

This is a very good product. It is built well and is excellent for the preschooler to gain skills in patterns and following directions. It requres thinking and logic.
The only thing that I did not like about this is that the pieces will be allover the house unless you get a ziplock bag to store them in. It would have been better if there was a wooden door with a latch on it to store the pieces inside.

I love this product! I am a former Montessori Preschool teacher and had this exact product in my classroom.It was easily one of the most popular items in the room. We used it to teach pattern matching. My classroom was 3 years of age to kindergarten and any child in the classroom could sit at a rug and work with this for an hour or more. I highly recommend this product and plan on buying it for my 5 year old nephew for Christmas!
