My daughter received this as a present at age three. She could have started using it at a much younger age. But even as a three-year-old we have gotten good use out of it. I have used it in our group homeschool preschool to work on cooperation and counting. We put the number beads in the middle and had the girls pass around the string and string on the numbers in counting order. Good to work on counting skills. And we certainly worked on taking turns, which was not easy for them! We even put a circular bead at the beginning and a tubular bead at the end and said it was a caterpillar! They loved it!

My son was 18 months when he started playing with these. Great for beading, sorting and stacking while benefiting eye-hand coordination. HINT: To make it easier with the shoelace for beading, I knotted one end and used tape to tape the other end an extra inch and whaa-laa your 18 months old will bead away by themself. When my son was done I tied up the ends together, he put it on and I took a picture. My son had fun and I love the memory. I stored mine in a sliding ziplock bag (prevent lost pieces) and store it high up so he can only play with it when I'm with him. Thanks Melissa and Doug!

got this for my 1 1/2 year old daughter to play with. Helps her with hand coordination, but perhaps would be better suited for an older child of 2-4 years old. Had difficulty threading beads and needed supervision because of long cords, but had lots of fun stacking them as blocks and sorting the shapes. Different that all the other plastic toys sitting around the house. Liked the wood, colors, shapes and patterns. Would reccomend for older child, could be fun if used by a group of children such as at a birthday party for girls.

I really like Melisa & Doug products, so I bought this one for my baby girl.....Great colors....nice big blocks that work for threading but also for stacking. The one problem I see with this is the box. If you are going to take the trouble to make a container to fit all the blocks and threads, than make it so it can be storage for them too. You spend the money on making a wooden box, but it has no lid....The game lasts little, pieces start to disappear. I wouldn't mind paying an extra dollar for a better container.
