The poor reviews are spot on. The compartment that holds the pegs is ridiculous. It drives me crazy to try to open it. I think sometimes the pegs get stuck in it however and shaking it a little helps. I would rather have a plug in with a brighter screen however this is a good travel toy (except when the pegs fly everywhere). My daughter loves it but used up the black sheets in a week. Have to go online to find refills.

What a disappointment! The storage compartment is ridiculous! I can't open it without the pegs flying everywhere. How's my three year old going to open it? Also, the on/off switch doesn't work! It lit up for about 10 seconds and hasn't worked since. This thing couldn't have passed any quality test. It's garbage!

I did not have a Lite Brite as a child - bought this one for my kids (ages 6 and 3). They both love playing with it and don't encounter the same problems as others. If you gently open the peg holder, none come out. Very easy for a 3 year old to use and comes with blank black paper for the 6 year old to be creative. My husband and I enjoy using it with the kids as well. We like it so much, the kids want to buy it as a gift for all their friends! (and we do!)

Disappointed because my child cannot turn off and on when she wants. The light stays on for 3 minutes. Also the pegs fall out of the compartment when you open it.

I wish I had read the ratings before buying this. Though it has a storage compartment that we did not have as kids, it is impossible even for an adult to open without pegs flying everywhere! I agree that it is good in that it does not open easily if you have a toddler in the house; but that goes out the window when the 200 pegs fly everywhere and it is impossible to account for every single one of them once they are scattered across a room! We have a baby on the way, and I know this will make me a nervous wreck. I also do not like that when they are not lit up that the white/yellow and pink/orange are almost the same color- often you have to pull the wrong one out and put the right color in- an issue that leads to pegs not staying in the holes. On that note, for those who posted that the pegs do not stay in the holes, I agree with that too- then again, I do not recall them being too tight when we were kids either- I doubt if they have not improved that issue in 35+ years that they may never. A big plus is that it is battery operated- no need or plugs or outlets. I also like that it has a power saving option and that the light goes off after 5 minutes.

This is obviously not the same as when I was a child and it has only become better. Instead of being stuck next to an outlet like in the old days, it uses batteries which is great. My 5 year old loved it for Christmas 2008 and thought it was beautiful. The light does go on and off every 3 minutes to conserve the battery life which is a great idea. Its not about just "poking holes" its about using fine motor development skills and putting together patterns which is huge in preschool and Kindergarten. It shows the picture very nicely and our daughter and I love it. I would tell anyone to buy this as it is fun and educational.

Purchased a red for my son and a pink for my daughter. Don't be mislead by the picture. The screen is not black. It's the actual color of the toy. You have to place a black paper (included) on the screen. If you don't use the piece of paper, the light comes through the colored plastic and you can not see you design well at all. (How long till the kids tear or lose that piece of paper....why didn't they just make it with a black screen like they used to have??)It's battery operated and only stays lite for 3 minutes then it shuts off(to conserve battery life). I loved this toy as a child...who would have thought that the old version would be so much better than this new one all these years later....

My four year old daughter got a lot of toys for Christmas this year, her favaorite of which was her Lite Bright Flat Screen. It was also one of my favorite toys at that age (30 years ago). The current flat screen isn't anything close to the lite bright of old though. The bulb is small and doesn't illuminate the entire picture very well. The center (where the light is concentrated) is very bight, but the ends hardly light up at all. It's a great little toy and will keep the little ones occupied for a long time. The only weaknesses are no AC adapter (runs on D batteries) and lack of bightness. It's more like a Lite Dull versus a Lite Bright.

I bought this as a birthday present for my 4-yr old. She wasn't over excited about it. I mean, face it. You put pegs in holes. How much fun can it be. She had a problem holding on to the pegs. But the biggest problem was that the connectors for the light didn't work and it would just go on and off. Very sad.
