I am a first time mom of a 5 mo old. FOr the most part I have exclusively breastfed my baby for 5 months. I have used this breast pump since my daughter has been 2 weeks old to store milk to build up a supply of extra milk. I had a VERY hard time breastfeeding in the beginning and all the nurses just said keep pumping to keep your milk supply up. So I did and buy week 4 we got the hang of it.

I have used the pump at least 3 times a day since returning to work at 7 weeks (so I have been using it for about 4.5 months now. I pump once before work and twice at work. It has held up very well. No complaints at all. If i had to buy a breast pump all over again, I might look at the hands free model, but this one is great! I bought rechargable batteries b/c at work i do not have access to an outlet and they last pretty long (keep a spare 8 AA batteries though b/c when the recharables go, they go. If you plan on pumping a lot, I would also recommend buying additional Medela bottles to store milk and 2-breast shields w/ valve & membrane. Note: Lansinoh bottles fit too! Note: the Gerber plastic milk storage containers are great and cheaper than the Medela bags. Also, regarding the back pack style versus the shoulder bag. The pump is heavy but i would have probably preferred the should bag, just b/c it looks a little more professional, but the backpack is great. Only negative (very, very minor) the velcro wore off on the one side pocket where I keep the spare AA batteries that i carry, no big deal though. All in all i would buy this pump again and i am very pleased with the quality for the money we spent.

This review is coming from a second time breastfeeding mom. I used an Ameda for my first child for 13 months and never had a single issue. I have used this Medela for 5 months and this thing is horrible! I so wish I would have bought an Ameda again. My Ameda lasted the whole time I breastfed it only broke after being in storage for 2 years so I had to buy a new one. The Ameda has a far superior design and is much more user friendly. This Medela requires a lot of maintenance and replacement pieces.
Here is my list of comparisons:
-On the Ameda the suction portion is above where the milk gets collected so there no way for your milk to get into the tubes or create condensation in your tubes! With the Medela your milk passes right by the tubing which creates condensation and makes it possible for milk to actually back up into the tubing. Once my milk backed up all the way through the tubing to the actual pumping mechanism which made a huge mess, forced me stop pumping, take everything apart, clean the tubing, and take apart the face plate and clean the faceplate! Such a pain when trying to pump at work!! –-You have to let your pump run for 2 minutes after pumping, or even if you do but tubing is like 2 months old and starting to go bad, if you do not let the tubes run through the condensation will then create mold/mildew inside the tube!!! Really impossible to clean, I washed with water, I used alcohol (recommended in the booklet), and used a steam bag still not clean- so then you are stuck getting a new set every few months. So tubing huge issue.
-The valves. In the Ameda the valves are a soft rubber flexible piece that is easy to clean and NEVER broke even though they give you a second one. The Medela the valves are a hard plastic piece that are sometimes difficult to remove so do not put them on the connectors to tightly. then there are these stupid little membranes on the valves that are tiny, slippery, and very easily break. you will need replace these pretty often because not only can they rip easily but if they get worn out then they don't lay flat so you can lose suction, ugh!
-The connectors which connect the bottle, the tubing, and the breast shield also are very difficult to clean. In the Ameda the chamber is one flat surface, in the Medela there are like three little chambers where if you don't clean it milk can get stuck in there and create mildew- which happened to me! No matter what bottle cleaner you have there is no way to get up in there. So you do HAVE to use the steamer bags to fully clean out all your parts. After buying the bags I have not had an issue with the mildew since.
----So if you are not keeping track just to maintain this pump you will spend more $ on replacement tubes, membranes, and steam bags just keep it clean.
-Now also take into consideration that today my pump has NO SUCTION!! So now I am using a hand pump this is what sent me over the edge to write this review. I have done all the troubleshooting and still nothing works. It is under warranty and they will be hearing all of this when I call to get a new pump. Now I have to hand pump today and hopefully my replacement will be in soon. If I can I will just ask for my $ back to get an Ameda but doubtful on that!
So those are the big issues.
-Also take into consideration the actual backpack design. I have already lost two of the zipper tabs in 5 months and other are loose so just a pain to open by having to pull on the little metal piece left behind. The pump is sewn into the backpack so it makes it difficult troubleshooting and get the faceplate back on because it is awkward. Also means you have to take the backpack with you and you cannot get a new one even if all your zipper tabs pull off- you're stuck with it!
I also will share my best friend also had a Medela for only 3 months and had very similar issues with mildew/mold/ tubes melting, and tabs coming off. This thing is junk. the hospital recommends it I know. But they have beautiful Symphony pumps that are absolutely nothing like this and are far superior. I used a hospital Medela while in the hospital with my daughter when she was a month old. Used it for 2 weeks loved it so bought this thinking it would be the same just a smaller version- it absolutely is not the same thing!! Save yourself money, headaches, and heartaches (because now I am worried I am going to lose my supply before my new one comes) Buy Ameda!!

Comments about Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump - Backpack:

This is a great pump that has enabled me, a first-time mom, to provide my milk to my son his 8 months, 5 of which I've been back in the office, and we're still going. It was recommended to me by another mom, a stranger in the aisle at Babies R Us, who said she wished she had it from the start. If I were going to buy a pump again, I would go with this one because it pumps the milk I need in about 10 minutes and gives me little to no trouble. It was worth the money to me. I even got a compliment on the bag from a person who didn't know what it was. I got the backpack because I assumed having my hands free would be advantageous.

    Tips and Insights:
-Note that the pump comes with a size Medium shield. The manual has a guide for fitting the shield. I had to buy a Small.
-Definitely run the pump after done pumping to get the condensation out of the tubes. Mine usually has condensation.
-I got the bustier to go hands free and did eating and computer and reading while pumping. So nice.
-Get extra membranes, which are the little white rubber pieces. They are very small and easy to lose down the drain. I've used the two extra that came with the pump and have more.
-When removing the little white membrane from the valve, pop it out from the back with your finger instead of pulling it from the front. One of mine tore that way.
-When pushing on the yellow piece of the valve, be careful not to push it on too hard otherwise it may be difficult to remove.
-A few times I've had apparently no suction on one side due to some positiong error and I think I found that I just need to make sure my breast was "out" enough to round out and fill the bottom of the shield to make a vacuum.
-One of the fabric zipper pulls came off at 7.5 months. I replaced it with a key ring and it's good.
-I only had milk get into the tubes and diaphragm once and it was easy to rinse and wipe down. Running the pump on high gets the water out of the tubes.
-I've found I can turn the pump up during a session as my body gets comfortable with expressing and get more milk that way.
-I always pump into the 5oz bottles that came with the pump. Then I transfer the milk into bags, containers, etc.

I pumped from 4 weeks to 3 months, 3 times a day after feeding, at which time I returned to work and had a good stockpile. I pumped in the morning before work after first feeding and at work for each missed feeding, which was 3. I generally pump for any missed feeding, but don't bother if it's invconvenient (as long as it doesn't happen consistently or my body will get the wrong message). Around 6 months I stopped pumping in the morning before work, when I noticed my stockpile was going up instead of evening out, and he was starting solids around that time as well anyway.

When at work I just rinse the parts after each use and wash them by hand with soap and water when I get home. I occassionally sterilize them in boiling water for 10 min.

Comments about Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump - Backpack:

Well I picked this product because I was told it's the best on the market. But I don't trunk so at all. I'm stuck with this pump that I can't even use because it stopped working after only using it about 5 times! The only way it will work is if I'm pumping from both breast at the same time. If I wanted to just pump from only one it does not pump. It's so strange. I even had my friend who has the same brand test it out because she is also breastfeeding and the same thing happened to her. She was the one who recommended me this brand.

So now I don't pump because it's too expensive and doesn't work..

I am an exclusive pumper, and I use this multiple times daily. I have only had it a couple of weeks, but so far it has been awesome. When I was in the hospital, I used the medela hospital grade pump. I'm still new at this, but I can't tell a difference between the two. This pump is really good quality and dependable. I would recommend it to anyone who plans on pumping more than once a day.

Comments about Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump - Backpack:

I purchased this pump because I have to go back to work. I was a little nervous about buying a pump. Worrying that I would get "the wrong one". I knew I would purchase a medela pump. But even in medela there are quite a few.

This is perfect. Other models offer hands free option. But seriously. You only pump for 15 minutes at a time. And it takes longer than that to set up those models to be hands free. This one works great. Easy to set up and clean. And guess what, it can be hands free!!

You might not be able to walk around but if you buy the bra for the pump, you can pump hands free. Which I suggest doing because it's a little hard to hold both bottles and turn on the pump.

I'm 25 and think the totes looks kinda frumpy. And the backpack looks so cute. Oh and to the people who say the tubes get too much condensation, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! You're supposed to leave the pump on after you're done to clear the tubes! I've never had a problem.

Get this pump. Don't spend the $ on the hands free either!

I love the convenience of the pump being attached to the back pack and having all that room to pack and store things when on the go. I like the ease ofuse. Love the let down button!! Now that being said, it's not the best pump I've ever had, I wish it was a bit more powerful has decent suction not great I don't feel it mimics my baby too closely and I feel that if I tried to pump exclusively my milk would probably dry up pretty fast.

I had a Breastpump given to me free by my insurance and it was so frustrating to get milk. No milk means no food for my little one. There wasn't a question in my mind that I had to get another pump and been meaning to get medela no matter how much the price is. As soon as I brought it home, I started pumping and milk starting flowing. It was so easy to use, and I get a lot of milk on the first let down. If there is one thing I could complain about it, is that I hope the power cord is much longer coz I had to find a spot in my room close to a power outlet. Other than that, it is very efficient and worth every penny.

I have used this product for the last 6 months. I started having to pump a few days after my daughter was born. Its easy to use, works great and easy to clean. I got the backpack style because it was the only available style in the store at the time. I didn't think I would like it, thinking the tote would be better. I actually really like the backpack. It has a lot of storage in it for all your breast pump accessories.
