My daughter is six months old and we have been pumping for the entire time. I feel that I have become a "fast expert" on breast pumps and I am more than willing to pass on what I have learned in the hopes it will help.

There are two kinds of pumping systems: "closed" and "open". "Closed" means that there is a silicone membrane that separates the motor used for pumping from the actual milk. Now, if you knock over the bottle you can still get milk all over the membrane, into the tubes and therefore into the motor of the pump. "Open" means that there isn't a separation between the two and if you knock over the bottle, over fill the bottle, or jump around while pumping you WILL get milk into the tubes and possibly the motor. The Medela "Pump in style advanced" is an open system where the "Freestyle" is a closed system.

My daughter was Jaundice and hospitalized at three days, we made it home an entire 14 hours before we were back in the hospital, and we were required to supplement her after every nursing session with "x" amount more. As I didn't want to give her formula this meant that not only was I nursing a new born ten to twelve times in twenty four hours but I was pumping for 20 minutes after EVERY feeding to get enough so that I would be able to tell the doctors that we supplemented her with exactly "X" amount in addition to the feedings. My nipples were headed for a workout.

We started off with a rental of the Medela "Symphony" from the hospital. It was a WONDERFUL machine, double electric and so quiet that she could sleep in the bed and I didn't even have to move to pump. It would drain both of my breasts in around 10 minutes and was comfortable the entire time. My nipples were never sore and I didn't have to suffer any engorgement because my pump could fix it right there. It helped to establish my milk supply as well and even a bit of a surplus for the freezer. It was also $1,400. No, seriously that comma is in the right place. Personally I can't shell out that much for a milker so I looked into buying a pump that cost a bit less. It was also the size of a car battery and heavy. But hey it worked like a dream so I moved everything off my night stand.

The Ameda pumps were very well recommended and I looked into them. At around half the price of a Medela I was curious. I mean seriously, it's a milker, all it does is pump right? Yeah I was wrong. They have been purchased by Evenflo. Guess who has the EXACT SAME design… Lansinoh… available at your local big box store for about $100. This sounded too good to be true. A "closed" system pump for only $100? I had heard that closed systems were superior and this one is the same design and rumored to be made by the same parent company. I bought it and three days later I had a hundred dollar paper weight. My nipples, which NEVER got irritated with the "Symphony" with twelve pumping sessions plus full time breastfeeding, turned bright red and I honestly thought one might fall off and roll around on the table if anyone looked at me wrong. When you have a pump on for about five hours, give or take, in twenty four it matters. The pump was noisy too. I would have to leave the newborn in the bedroom, go across the house to the living room and then put a pillow over the motor to try and muffle it. My husband said he could still hear it. It does have separate controls for suction and speed but you need the speed to be quick to simulate a babies suckling. This is why you aren's supposed to use a binky for the first four weeks. The constant suckling helps to bring in and then maintain a milk supply. Yes, the pump will drain your breasts but it won't provide enough stimulation to keep your supply up.

I was exhausted. I didn't want to have to sneak across the house. I didn't want my nipples to hurt. I crawled on hands and knees and broken nipples back to the lactation consultant at the hospital and bought the "Pump in style advanced Metro Bag". The reason I got the metro bag is that I could remove the pump and keep it by the bed without having to have the entire bag. The pump is small and lightweight and let's be honest any pump is hands free with a pumping bra. Or a sports bra and scissors. The pump is quiet. Not as quiet as the "Symphony" but I can still nurse, lay the baby down, and pump in the same space. It's really fricking quiet. I see no difference in suction from the "PISA" and the "Symphony." The let down button is there and the "PISA" has a turn dial and not a digital display but that is the only difference I see. I can pump both breast from very full to empty in about eight to ten minutes at work (my record is twelve ounces at work), and have NEVER gotten milk in my tubes. Even if I did get milk in them they are only five dollars to replace. I bought my pump and parts from my lactation service at my hospital and they are cheaper than the big box store.

I don't see why you would want a pump that attaches to your belt like the "Freestyle" anyway. I do wish the "PISA" had a rechargeable battery function but I get about a week off of 8 AA batteries so I'm happy. The cooler works great and the bag holds everything it came with. I have heard people complain they can't use it as a diaper bag with the pumping supplies but when I have my daughter with me I don't need the pump so I don't understand why you would need to put both together. The bag is holding up well and doesn't scream "I'm going to milk myself now" which is nice since I work with the public and don't need to advertise that while you are eating dinner I am pumping my daughters.

Over all I don't see how the "open" system is a bad thing. The pump works amazingly well and I am out $100 dollars on a purple paperweight because I was dumb. Oh, and my kid is cute too.

I think I paid way too much for this pump just to pay for the Brand name! Now, I realize that other products out there offer way more perks than this one for less. I have used this pump for less than 4 months. For example, my friend bought a "My first years" brand pump, cost her $70, the membrane, which I'm constantly replacing on mine,(i have lost one in the kitchen drain, and another just tore at the insert point) never has to be replaced on hers b/c it's permanently attached and made sturdier. It's almost like medela wants to milk you for every penny you got!Second ex.,the soft-shields do turn yellow and become warped, currently my shields are flaking off in the interior part, like the plastic is peeling, again, I'm going to have to go buy a new set. I do like the feel of the soft-shields, but it's a darn shame they turn yellow and everyone else on here can pretty much agree with me on that! On the first-years-brand, my friend got a stick to hold the two bottles together, so she can have one free hand while she pumps. She says she uses it every once in a while, I would have liked to have that! Also, have you noticed how other brands come with a stand to hold your bottles in? I realize why that is important, when you pump and lets say you fill the bottle halfway to 2 oz, because you are interrupted by a crying a baby for instance, when you set the bottle down, the bottle may tip forward because there isn't enough weight to hold the bottle down. Not to mention, I have had a couple of scary moments when I go to turn off the pump, and i accidentally knocked over my milk, fortunately, not too much spilled. Another feature,i just noticed on the Lansinoh pump, that I wish Medela would have is two dials for different pumping speeds, because believe it or not, your breast will not produce the same amount of milk at the same rate! I have experienced one draining way quicker than my other breast, and then the other catches up, so I wish I could set different paces on each breast. Also, sometimes, one breast might be feeling more tender than the other one, and you are forced to go slow on both breasts. Medela, could, as a courtesy, offer their customers a voucher so that you could at least get a different size shield for free, or discounted, or something, I had to pay $14 at [...] for an larger-sized shield. The only thing I like about the this particular model is that the pump is portable, and not built into a backpack or other bag. The pump gets the job done-but it could use some of the creature comforts that come with cheaper pumps. Ultimately,I would not recommend this to a friend.

Comments about Medela Pump In Style® Advanced Double Electric Breast Pump - The Metro Bag™:

No complaints on the product, thought everything was going smoothly. I purchase the product 12/18/2012 and had my daughter on 1/24/2013. I started to use the product when she was a little over a month old and the day she was supposed to turn 3 months it stopped pumping. It lost suction. I called to replace the product since I purchase the protection plan and the person I spoke with let me know that I would have to go out and purchase another one, send him the reciept for both the original purchase and the new pump than I would receive my money back in 10-15 days. What a load of milarki, this is not helpful and a bigger incovienence to have to pay for the same item twice instead of going to the store to return the original and pick up a new one. Formula it is.

Comments about Medela Pump In Style® Advanced Double Electric Breast Pump - The Metro Bag™:

I'm happy to say I get just as much milk expressed as i did when i used the hospital rental. I have had no issues with the pump. I use it 4 times a day away from home with a hands free bra and also after each feeding. So it gets a lot of use. Its easy to use while working at my desk or in the backseat of the car. If I could improve anything it would be the following: I wish you could select flange sizes when you purchase the pump. It doesn't make sense to pay hundreds of dollars for something that doesn't work properly without the correct sized flanges. I do have to change the membranes often because the suction decreases when the membranes aren't changed out. This is an easy fix. I did read about mold problems since it isn't a closed system, but i haven't had that problem. I let it run a few minutes if i see condensation in the tubes. Overall, I am super happy with the pump. I hear horror stories of bad pumps and I'm so glad it has worked for me to use so I can continue to breastfeed while working.

Comments about Medela Pump In Style® Advanced Double Electric Breast Pump - The Metro Bag™:

In preparations to be a first time mom, I bought this breast pump, feeling a little overwhelmed by how it would work for me. I read great reviews on it and decided to get this one in particular because I would be taking it to work. I am extremely impressed with this pump and at ease with how easy it is to operate. It is simple, expresses milk fast and painless, and is dishwasher safe! Even washing by hand doesn't take that long. Not that I have used any other pumps to compare this one too, but I am extremely satisfied with this product. If you are currently shopping for a pump, you may be hesitant to spend the extra money to buy a Medela double electric pump, but think of all the money you will save by not buying formula. I have been pumping for 6 months and I know the pump has been paid for several times already just by not having to buy formula. Splurge and get yourself a good pump. You won't regret it! My only tip is to spend the extra money and buy the Medela Easy Expressions Bustier ---- IT IS COMPLETELY WORTH EVERY CENT!!!!!! It makes it hands-free, although I have used it without the bustier and it's still doable. The ONLY downfall is the closure on the metro bag. It has a magnetic closure that doesn't stay shut, but that isn't a big deal to me at all. It would be nice if it had a zipper closure, but I love everything else about it that this is petty to me.

I recently purchased this pump because I'll sadly be going back to work soon. It works well. I get great suction and it's not uncomfortable. However, as it is a double pump, I get the best results when both sides are being pumped. But the on/off is a knob that must be turned and I can't turn the knob when both hands are holding bottles. Therefor, I need someone else there with me, preferably my husband, to help me turn it on and off. Unfortunately, if my husband, or my mom, is not available, I can't pump.

I purchased this breast pump to use with the birth of my new baby girl. I wasn't planning on using it until I went back to work, however, it has come in very handy even sooner than I thought. My breasts became engorged shortly after leaving the hospital, to the point of severe discomfort. I used the medela breast pump to express some milk, not only to help my baby latch on easier, but also to provide myself with some relief. I would recommend this product to anyone, as it is easy to use, and I'm sure I'll love it once I need it to pump once I do go back to work.

Comments about Medela Pump In Style® Advanced Double Electric Breast Pump - The Metro Bag™:

I absolutely love this pump. It has seen me through breastfeeding 2 children after going back to work. I have had the pump for 3 yrs. I used it for a year with my 1st child and again for the past year with my 2nd. It is very easy to use. I use this pump at work and home- it is highly efficent (can pump both breasts in 10-15 minutes). I had researched several pumps and decided on this because Medela replacement parts are easy to buy if necessary (which I did have to buy an extra electrical adapter after I dropped mine and it broke. But it is easy to obtain additional parts if needed.) I also like the Metro Bag because the pump is not part of the bag, it is separate. Overall- this pump is a well-made, quality pump that is very durable and efficient, and absolutely worth it!

I bought this product 4 years ago. It was well worth it. I was glad I bought this specific brand. I pump 4 oz. (2 oz. from each side) in a 5 minute pumping session. Now I am using it again for my new 7 month old baby. It still works just fine after 4 years. The only new parts I replaced were the tubing. I also bought new breast shields as they've changed the designs since I last used them. There are too many little parts to boil and clean, but the machine does what its supposed to do. So I'm giving it 5 stars.

Gets the job done. I have not used any others to compare it to, but I am satisfied with the results. Fairly comfortable for me, and not too bad once you get used to it.

However, I have several complaints. Like others who have commented, I needed extra tubing! Ugh, it's so hard to find for a reasonable price. One of the little yellow plugs fell out of one of my tubes, and I lost it. So I was down to just one tube and had to pump one at a time until I could get some more tubing. Also, it is loud. And my arms got tired holding the bottles upright. Get the hands free bra, or make your own. It is waaayy easier. I made my own. The Medela brand may be good, but like the machine, too expensive. My biggest complaint is the price. Medela is so expensive. After you pay so much for this machine, you have to buy extra tubing, the storage bags, Calma, etc. Just overpriced in my opinion.

I pump a few times a day (for 5 mths), so it has held up nicely (knock on wood). I would recommend it, however, buy more tubing!!
