I purchased this product even after reading the negative reviews about children about being able to slide down out of the restraint. I did some internet searching for a solution and found this wonderful article: How to Modify a CARES (Child Aviation Restraint System.

I followed what it said and it made a world of difference. Give it a try.

I don't recommend it for two reasons:
1. I couldn't use it with different airlines!!
2. It's expensive!

I purchased this for my 19 months old son. We were flying to get to a port for a cruise. It worked great since we didn't have to take his car seat and have to store it in the ship cabin. The only improvement is a need for a strap between their legs. My son kept sliding down even when all the straps where tight!

Even the airline staff liked the way this worked. The harness keeps my toddler secure and not running down the aisles. Comfortable enough for him to fall asleep in it! A lot of passengers wanted to know where we got it.

I have used this product a number of times with my daughter who is going to be 4 soon. I used it for the first time when she was about 1.5 and it worked great. I now plan to use it on my 1 year old son and have confidence in it. I see no problem with this as long as you istall it correctly and it installs quickly and easily. This is still a "new" system and all flight attendants might not be familiar with it. There could be a problem with the entertainment systems, but there is nothing that can be done about it. I'd recommend getting the far aft seats so nobody is sitting behind you. For those who are concerned about the legality of this system, I'd recommend that you go to the FAA website and carry a copy of this just in case.[...]

I'm not sure who told you this was not an approved device, but it is. This is from the FAA's website directly:
Air travelers have a new option for securing their children on commercial flights now that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved a new type of child safety device, the AmSafe Aviation CARES.
This was in 2006, sorry you were misinformed. Also there is a way around the tray:
Ensuring that CARES did not adversely affect the functionality of the tray was an important FAA criteria for certifying CARES. The tray is lowered for only a minute while the red webbing loop is adjusted around the seat, and then is closed and locked in place, covering up the CARES loop. CARES does not affect the functioning or use of the tray.
This is a wonderful safety device in my opinion and saves parents from lugging around a heavy car seat. There is a certification label sewn in the inside of the belt and you have every right to use it on any US flight and some international ones as well.

Make sure you check with the airline before you use this product. It's a great idea but wouldn't work for us. As we probably won't be flying again for a long time it was a real waste of money. More airlines are adding special features to "enhance the travel experience", which is great...just not for us in this case. Our airplane had individual t.v. screens in the back of each seat which meant that the strap that goes around the seat would either be covering the t.v. of the person behind us or it would be too low and covering their table tray (not to mention in a terrible spot on my son). All in all was useless for us. Again, I would recommend calling the airline and inquiring. I also found out from the Flight Attendant that the FAA has not approved this so she said we probably wouldn't have been allowed to use it anyway....

This was a great transition item for going from the car seat to the airplane seat/seatbelt. My 2 and a half year old definately needed more support in the airplane seat and this was great having the harness like in her carseat. However, the only problem I found was that because there is nothing holding her in the seat between her legs, she would tend to slide down when she fell asleep. Then she looked really uncomfortable and when this happened, the harness was now up just under her chin instead of across her chest. Overall, I'd recommend it for kids 3 and up.

Bought this to fly with my daughter who is 1.5 years old. I've flown with her by myself several times, struggling with her and a car seat, and this was a life saver. She's used to having her own seat on flights and the harness system on CARES is the same as on her car seat, so she didn't have any problems adjusting. People on the plane were interested in what it was and how it worked and I even had the opportunity to hand out a few of the business cards that they send in the bag!
