LEGO Technic Cargo Plane Set

A wide range of motorized mechanical features, including working landing gear and spinning rotors, help ready the LEGO Technic Cargo Plane Set for take-off as it zooms out on a tough cargo mission. Move the joystick to make flaps and ailerons move. Place a mini figure (not included) in the elevator and move the joystick to take the pilot to different areas within the plane. Activating the LEGO Power Functions motors provides power to open and close front and rear cargo bays, retract the landing gear after take-off and spin the propellers. After conquering this complex build, the 1,297-piece set can be rebuilt as a transport hovercraft for more LEGO fun.

Product Highlights

  • Spin the propellers, open and retract landing gear and open and close front and rear cargo bays mechanically when the LEGO Power Functions motors are activated
  • Moving a joystick adjusts the flaps, moves the ailerons and even operates an elevator inside of the plane
  • Rebuild the 1,297-piece set into a transport hovercraft for more excitement after you've mastered the cargo plane

This was my first Technic set and I wasn't sure what it was like, but it looked more complicated than standard Lego and a fun challenge to create. It was while I was making it I realised what I'd been missing out on! The advanced build style designed for the big kids appealed to me greatly. There were two things I noticed with Technic. One, that the build style is so flexible in that it can allow for almost anything to be made. This model came with nearly 140 different elements and hundreds of peices, which is great compared to standard Lego. Standard Lego is all very well but with technic you can build horizontally, vertically, and even upside down with ease, with the versatility of all the different components. The second thing I noticed was the incredible strength of the Technic build. The way everything locks together and the strength of the little connectors ensures even moving parts are extremely durable. Now, to the plane itself. It is BIG BIG BIG - it is currently the largest Technic set and little wonder so many features can be niftily stored inside it. Firstly, it has a control stick that can both raise/lower the ailerons and also control the flaps. There is another stick that activates the elevators - all that's missing is a rudder, but still, one is spoilt with all the control features that the Cargo Plane contains. The power functions work extremely well. One is slightly astonished that from a collection of cogs and a certain nifty element four brilliant power functions can be operated. There's the opening cockpit, revealing the huge battery pack (it contains six AA batteries, which is something to remember if buying this model) which is one of the best - working features. Then there's the opening cargo door at the rear, which is startlingly similar to a real Cargo plane's. Inside is a surprisingly large storage area which can fit a moderately large standard Lego car. Then there's the propellors, of course (which I reckon make the plane look a little like a Hercules) but are probably a little too large for the plane. However, they function beautifully and add immeasurable authenticity to the aircraft. Finally, there's my personal favourite, the retractable undercarriage. This is made up of four large wheels at the middle of the plane and two under the cockpit. The middle four are rather nicely covered by a sheath-like assembly which raises to expose the wheels and lowers to cover them when they're up. One great aspect of the power functions is that you can operate two at once, so you can have the props going and undercarriage being raised/lowered for taking off/landing , or both front and rear cargo doors opening/closing for being loaded up. The actual assembly of the plane does take a while but it's never boring! The instructions are clear and straightforward but it's vital to follow them extremely carefully - this is one of those builds that if you make the slightest mistake you suffer horribly later on! (It's never fun pulling hours of work apart to fix a small, but vital, problem.) This set has a fair few stickers but it's not a big deal - they look great and contribute largely to the model's authenticity. The six stickers put on the middle sides of the plane (the cargo sign and windows) in particular look great. The windows really add a feature of humanity, something a little lacking in this complex array of technic bits! That said, the cockpit interior looks great and very much like the real thing. One con that may or may not worry you is that the front cargo area is rudely taken up by the huge battery pack. Why have an opening cockpit when there's no room to put cargo in? However, the huge rear area more than makes up for this. The wings are the last part you build and have the greatest number of stickers on them, but look great. They are even longer than they look on the package and I love the way the engines fit snugly into the underneath of the wings. An interesting feature one can't help noticing is the registration - LKJ 1960. I presume this is the initials and birthdate of the designer? Thumbs up to that designer - I give him 5/5 for his masterpiece! The awesome power functions, the strength and sleek look of the plane - and the marvellous way it looks just like a real cargo plane! Look forward to making the hovercraft (even though it looks more like a boat and what on earth is a cargo hovercraft?) Well done to Lego - keep up the good work!

Overall a decent build

Comments about LEGO Technic Cargo Plane (42025):

      General
      * Medium-high complexity build
      * Price in line with product output and build complexity

      Pros:
      * No tricks during build discovered later that required me to disassemble and repeat
      * Extensive user inactive features with plane - front opens, control at rear that acts like a pilots in real life, land gear fold up into chassis
      * Can be completed in a day on the weekend without being stressed

      Cons:
      * Motor functions don't have the clutch/slip gear, so when parts reach their limits, you get the gear crunches and skips which are hard on the weaker parts and just seems so wrong when Lego includes the $.50 gear on most other $100 plus technic kits
      * Flaps, ailerons and rudder controls are very in-precise and flimsy
      * No elevators; which aren't optional on any real plane - no reason not to have added these as there's plenty of room. The whole tails design looks like an after thought. $5 cost in parts would have fixed this and only increased the cost of the plan $8 in reality.
      * No slats or spoilers which would be on a real cargo plane - these I can forgive as it's a Lego model and probably hard to do give the parts and scale
      * So many stickers and use of flat pieces on the fuselage that it doesn't match the style of the rest of the plane - especially to tail which uses open pieces design

Perfect for Patient, Determined, 10 yo Boy

Comments about LEGO Technic Cargo Plane (42025):

My son had never tackled a set quite this ambitious before. But he was absolutely determined to do it all by himself. It was a challenge, but he was able to do it. Really great set, and it gave him a real sense of accomplishment to finish it. I strongly recommend for a kid in that age range, who has the determination to see it all the way through. And from an adult's perspective, it's a really clever design and an impressive finished product!

        A great challenging build

Comments about LEGO Technic Cargo Plane (42025):

when I got the box I was like 'wow this is gonna be huge' I was so surprised at how massive this thing was . Im gonna give lego a call to compliment them on their sucsess.I was a little surprised when i found out that there was no white gear( found in other technic motorized sets), I think it would be better for it to have one, so the front and back doors would not jump their gears.I also liked the way the props. would stop if you put your finger in them so the gears dont jump.the amount of stickers was huge (there are about fifty) and i spent probably twenty minutes just putting all of them on! Over all this is a greatset i recommend it to anyone over 11 years.

Comments about LEGO Technic Cargo Plane (42025):

great product, it was on Santa's wishlist for my son (7 years) for Christmas. He loves this plane, with the power function and more, give him plenty enjoyment. the built was for him a bit too much, he started out good, for about 30 min, than i had to step in, and it was a blast doing it together. we worked slow and step by step for about 8 hours. instructions are easy to understand, even for him. unfortunately, unlike the CITY products, there is only one book and no numbered bags, so you have to empty all the bags at once and that became confusing to him. overall, amazing plane

I got this for my 9 year old because the regular Lego weren't really that challenging anymore. He has been building it but by bit for 4 days now. It's challenging -- but it is also providing him with a sense of accomplishment and pride. -- if your child is interested in aircraft, aerodynamics, engineering, or how things are made, I recommend this set.

Comments about LEGO Technic Cargo Plane (42025):

As my headline goes this was one of the hardest (or maybe the hardest) Sets I have ever done, but in all honesty it was totally worth it,I got this a few days ago,and it took me off and on between 14 & 16 hours to build.I have got to commend those who I have who can do it in 10 hours or so.But technically they probably did it by organization and separating the different pieces, but I don't do that,I just do it by the seat of my pants.

I knew starting off this was gonna be a big LEGO set,but HOLY Jeez this thing was just HUGE,at over 2 feet long this thing is HUGE,and so worth the price I paid for it.Also this isn't my first set of these I now think this and Creator are my two favorite types of Lego's,and hopefully if I can come up with the money I wanna try my hand at the Mobile Crane MK II,which I know will be another Monster Build,so I really don't know anything else to say about the Cargo Plane except buy it,build it,and you will be totally glad you did.Thank you Lego for Awesome Sets like this.
