My son received this as a Christmas present from his grandmother. The set up to the train was very simple. The trains themselves are very thin, I thought I was going to break them when I was removing them from the styrophome. As far as the train itself working, that's a no go!! It doesn't stay on the track. Very poorly made in that aspect. If the train would stay together, this train would be awesome for the price.

This product looks impressive in the box but when you open it the first thing you notice is it is made of thin, cheap plastic. Then you get to the track and it is the same thin, cheap plastic. DO NOT BUY THIS!! The wheels on the cars fall off easily. The couplers for the cars and train break off very easily. It's a complete waste of money. Felt so bad for my 4 yr old who was so excited to get it. Only to see his dissapointment at how frustrating it is to use and how easily it breaks.

My four year old son purchsed this train with his hard earned toysrus gift card...he was so excited...then we got it home and it has been nothing but frustrating for him and me. The instructions are weak, the tracks are flimsy and not easy to snap togehter, and the train car connectors are terrible...they don't stay connected and the train tips over too easy. We had to use ties to secure the cars together. My son ripped the box to get the set out but I'm still going to return it tomorrow. It is terrible and I hate to think that he wasted his hard earned gift card on such a terrible product.

Gentle 4 year old son got this from mum and dad for Christmas (my trip to the US which required the purchase of a new suitcase for all the toys) and there is nothing good about this toy because the design is the cheapest and most ill-fitting/connecting I have ever seen. The connectors on the track didn't connect and the connectors ont eh train engine and carts break easily - and I assure you, this isn't a rough kid. It's a terrible purchase - and now I really feel like I have to actually give my son something that isn't made cheaply that actually delivers something he REALLY REALLY wanted and worked hard for (lots of emptying the garbage bin, wiping tables, washing cars etc to contribute and this is what he gets).

3 Yr. Old son received for Xmas and made his year! Great train set for the price. Minor "adjustment" needed as mentioned by previous poster. Removed front wheels and runs like a charm. Is light, but pulls the cars with no problems once the front wheels of the engine are removed.

Horrible! BELIEVE the other bad reviews. I wish I would have read them before we bought this train at Toys R Us for my disabled son's Christmas gift. We had to cut back on Christmas this year and bought two gifts each for our two children. This train was one. The tracks are flimsy, the train doesn't stay on the tracks, the other pieces of the train don't attached, and the front wheel pins are broken after an hour of play. Horrible. Horrible. It made me so mad because my son loves trains. I went straight to this Toys R Us site to see what other options are available when I return it tomorrow and if there's a date stamp on this post, you'll see that it is Christmas Day. 12/25/11. Still Christmas, only hours after opening the gift. DO NOT BUY THIS TRAIN. Seriously.

This is an excellent item for the price, just needs a specific setup.
1> Remove those two little front wheels of the engine, the ones held on with the screw. They do nothing but keep the train off the track. If the axle were 2-3mm shorter, they'd be okay, but they are unhelpful as they are.
2> Setup the track on hard surface. It is indeed not sturdy enough to hold up on carpet. After setup, push down all around the track to ensure everything is snapped into place.
3> Adult with delicate touch needs to attach any trains after the engine and tender- the hooks require a light touch. Give a little jiggle to verify the wheels are inside the track as well. My four year old could setup the engine and tender and run that much by him self, but the remaining cars and hooks are finicky.
Once the above steps are completed, turn it on and enjoy. If you see a wobbly car, stop it real quick and get that car's wheels into the tracks, then resume. It runs smoothly indefinitely without problems once everything is set. Since the cars are so light, it will run for hours and hours on the 2 AA batteries. Sturdier train sets would demand scores of D-cells and cost 100 to 500 dollars (or wall outlet). There is nothing better than this below 100 dollars, except maybe cartoon trains like Thomas and Chuggingtons which are smaller and not so realistic or full of bells, whistles, and train sounds.
This is the best non-cartoon train set you will find under 100 dollars. Just take those little guide wheels off the front of the engine, set it up on a hard surface, and you're good to go.
Someone else actually made a YouTube video of it working fine- but you'll note the hardwood floor the track is on.
Even before we figured out the wheel solution, my son was fighting to keep it and insisting he was happy chasing the engine around the floor. The engine does roll on its own on carpet, and it is a cool thing.
I'd have given it five stars if I didn't have to 'tweak' it- this is an exceptional deal for thirty bucks. You have to go over a hundred to get better quality of an item like this. Kudos to the manufacturers for trying
Anyway, saved a fortune on train, and saving a fortune on battery power, and got the train working, so it is redeemed in my eyes. Love Toys R Us all around.

My son goct this for Christmas from his Grandma and Grandpa. We were all excited because it looked great on the box. When we finally opened it and put it all together we realized that it is a piece of junk. The train tracks would not stay together, the train kept on falling off the tracks. My son wanted to play with it but as soon as he got close to it the whole thing would fall apart. We used it once since Christmas and it has been in the box ever since. So it has been in the box, in the closet for the past 5 months. DO NOT BUY! IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY!!!!!

Track is flimsy. Will not stay together. Train will run once or twice before track separates and stalls train. Evident to me that the designers did not run an acutal train on the track. Finally put the track up. Train would not pull all the cars.

It is horrible avoid! The tracks don't click together like the box says they do not stay together. The train cars will not stay together. My children were very disappointed. It was a gift I am going to try to return toys r us. It looks nice on the box but it is very flimsy and poor. The box says ages 5+.
