I've been using this device for 6 1/2 years and have been very happy with it. My only complaint is that I miss a scroll wheel, otherwise I would have given it 5 stars with no hesitation. I love the fact that you can program the buttons for repetitive tasks, I've used the double click option so much I've worn it out and am looking to replace it now. If Kensington's model with the scroll wheel doesn't have programmable buttons for repetitive tasks (specifically the double click I use a thousand times a day) I'll order another of these and use it until it gives out. I keep a small bottle of rubbing alcohol and Q-tips in my desk drawer to clean off the tiny sensors under the ball when they get gunked up with dust and lotion and it's back up to the task in no time.

No frills, just basic. The lack of any kind of scroll wheel is a definite drawback -- I thought I'd get along fine without one, but I'm too used to having it (I actually have my old mouse sitting on the opposite side of my computer just so I can use its scroll wheel while I use this Kensington trackball as me main pointing device). So if you're used to scrolling with your mouse or trackball, you may want to spend the extra money to get the K72337 model. Also worth noting: the TrackballWorks software touted by Kensington on the website and in the packaging of the actual trackball didn't recognize this model, even though it was pictured. After contacting support they provided me with a link to an older version (1.2, as opposed to the version 1.3.1 that I had originally downloaded) which did recognize it, allowing me to make a simultaneous click of both left and right buttons initiate a "drag" where I could click them on a scroll bar, and then just use the trackball to pull it down and scroll the page -- which works as a great substitute for a scroll wheel until you land on a web page that expands as you scroll. Overall, though, if you just want a reliable basic pointing device, and you don't care about scrolling, you could do much worse than this model. And if you're worried about the transition from a mouse to a trackball, don't be -- it may take a few days for you to get used to the difference, but it really is much more comfortable to use, especially if you're on your computer for long hours.

I have mine over 4 years, and works perfectly. It is the only thing that healed my hurt elbow. I would not go back to a regular mouse to use for a long period.

I always buy this kind. When it eventually wears down, I replace it with this. Easy on the wrist; speedy; the best.

Started having problems just before 1 year

By Kathi

from Modesto, CA, United States

Comments about Kensington 1011817 1011817 Kensington Trackball Orbit Optical:

I love the mouse and have had this model before but it's just before the 1 year since I bought it and I and having problems with it glitching, the cursor sticks and I have to roll the ball much more than necessary to get it to move the cursor. I'm currently working with the company to get it foxed. Over all it's a great mouse while it works properly.

Bare Bones

By JeffT

from Chicago, IL, United States

Comments about Kensington 1011817 1011817 Kensington Trackball Orbit Optical:

Didn't realize when I ordered this trackball how little it actually does. Feels ok in your hand (not awesome), and the cursor targeting is excellent (like all Kensington products), but building a mouse in this day and age without a scroll wheel or ring is like building a car with no power steering. No matter how nice it is, you will NEVER get used to it. I am getting irritated right now just cursoring down as I write this review. Several reviews talk about the value you get for your money, however I can get an optical mouse WITH a scroll wheel for half the money. Where is the value in that? The Kensington I bought for work was the Expert for $100, but at least it feels like a hundred bucks worth of mouse (love the Expert, BTW). A company that only makes computer interface peripherals should know better.

Wonderful Trackball

Comments about Kensington 1011817 1011817 Kensington Trackball Orbit Optical:

Got this product this week and enjoy using it very much. My only critique is that it does not have a scroll function. Kind of a drag but worth it for the quality of the rest.

Worn Mine Out

By Ekwoman

from El Paso, TX, United States

Comments about Kensington 1011817 1011817 Kensington Trackball Orbit Optical:

I have had the Orbit Optical for probably 10 years (had 2 Kensington trackballs before that, going back to 1996) and I love it. The buttons have stopped working reliably, so I took it apart and "fixed" them. Worked for about a week. Sadly I thought I'd have to find a different trackball, but I am excited to see they still make it. I will be buying another one, I love this one so much! Comfortable, easy to program buttons, and I've never used a scroll wheel, so I don't miss it. Great for my lefty friends who use my computer, too!
