Description

Enfamil Tri-Vi-Sol with Iron provides an excellent source of vitamins A, C and D for infants and children who are exclusively or partially breastfed.

Founded over 100 years ago by Edward Mead Johnson, one of the original founders of Johnson and Johnson, the Mead Johnson company produces more than 70 different products that are distributed in over 50 countries worldwide. Mead Johnson produces baby formula, vitamin and specialty nutritional supplements including Enfamil. Introduced in 1959, Enfamil baby formula has undergone several significant changes since it was invented. Each change brings Enfamil baby formula nutritionally closer to breast milk.

Edward Mead founded Mead Johnson because he wanted to make products to help people live healthier lives. After much research, Edward Mead and his son Lambert discovered a way to manufacture nutrient-rich baby food formula for infants who didnt have access to breast milk. This eventually became Enfamil baby formula.

Mead Johnson's global operations center and U.S. regional office is located in Evansville, Indiana.

Got this as a sample from my OBGYN before my babe was born. Read up on ingredients and why it's necessary. I was shocked to find out that they can't get enough Vitamin D from BM. My babe wasnt thrilled by the taste at first but enjoys it now. I mix it in w his fruit or rice creal now. Not the best smelling and does stain but what vitamin smells or tastes great. Glad I've been using it almost since he was new and have recommended it to friends.

My question is what type of caramel coloring is used ?

Current federal regulations allow four types of caramel coloring: two of which are made with ammonia: Caramel III and Caramel IV.

Caramel III is made with ammonia but not sulfites and Caramel IV is made with ammonia and sulfites. Both of these have been implicated in causing cancer in lab animals.

The label does not disclose which type is being used. I find this both unfortunate and suspicious. Even more so since the artificial color is completely unnecessary.

What type of Caramel food coloring is present in this product? The ingredients only list "caramel color".

Until I find out more I am returning the TriViSol we purchased. I'm not taking any chances with my baby.

Aside from my concern it seems to be a good product, our EBF baby eats it up no problem, but he's seen the last of it until I find out more about the above.

For full disclosure I am a medical doctor.

Comments about Mead Johnson Enfamil Tri Vi Sol Drops:

I bought this on the recommendation of our pediatrician who told me breast milk doesn't contain adequate vitamin D and is low in iron. At time of writing, the blurb on the website mentions iron. But I don't see anything in the ingredients or supplement facts regarding iron. Is it just that vitamin C encourages iron absorption?

Comments about Mead Johnson Enfamil Tri Vi Sol Drops:

I bought this because my pharmacy had a very limited selection of vitamin D supplements for infants, but I stopped using it after three days.

I felt terrible putting this in my exclusively breastfed baby's mouth. It smells awful, and the amount necessary to reach the correct dosage is too much. Either I'd have to do it in two drops (one is hard enough), or I could flood his mouth with the stuff and he'd spit half of it out.

Which, of course, instantly stained whatever fabric happened to be nearby.

I ended up switching to a tasteless, odorless supplement made by another company that only requires a single drop (that can be applied to a real or artificial nipple!)

Comments about Mead Johnson Enfamil Tri Vi Sol Drops:

Has the formulation changed in recent years? Our first child took this and we had no problems. He's five now, and his new little brother gags and spits it out every time. It permanently stains EVERY piece of clothing it touches. That never happened five years ago. Also, Becky's response to the questions in other reviews about the caramel color didn't answer which type they use. The doctor's comments from 3/2012 worry me a little, and I wish they'd be forthcoming about their ingredients. Does anybody else really care what color the drops are? I sure don't, and I know my newborn doesn't care!

My pediatrician recommended I use these for my daughter since she was exclusively breastfed. They were easy to administer and she didn't mind the taste (fruit flavor without the vitamin aftertaste). She never gave me a problem about taking them. (However, the same cannot be said for the Poly Vi Sol drops, they taste horrible and even mixed in food she wouldn't take them!) I was very happy with this product, and plan to use them again for my baby on the way.

Comments about Mead Johnson Enfamil Tri Vi Sol Drops:

I love these drops!!! I started with Poly-Vi-Sol drops (not these) and my daughter hated the way they tasted. Even if I tried to mix them with a bottle, she would throw it up, and they stained everything when she would spit them up. Then I tasted them...gross...rusty nails!!! They even made her constipated...not good! So I bought these...SO MUCH BETTER! She LOVES them and will take them directly from the dropper. No constipation...no gas pains...great! Now that she's 16 months, she ASKS for them. I tried these too. They taste kind of like kool-aid...but with a vitamin aftertaste. My daughter doesn't seem to mind. They are also a yellow color (not brown) so when they drip on her clothing it comes out pretty easily. I wish I could find them at stores more convenient to me. I usually by 3-4 at a time at BRU when they are on sale.
