To be able to understand why LEGO has been successful for so long, just look to the name. LEGO originally got its name from founder Ole Kirk Christiansen by combining the Danish words "Leg Got" that means "play well". The LEGO set became a standard of creative play for children around the world, unlocking the creativity to build vehicles, buildings, cities and more. LEGO innovation continues to this day with product lines like DUPLO that was created in 1969 for smaller hands and still thrives. Movie tie-ins, such as LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Indiana Jones Adventures and LEGO SpongeBob are some of the most popular sets.

This is the first LEGO kit I have bought in perhaps 20 years. I have huge boxes of LEGO and Technics to sort out at my parents house one day. I was really looking forward to building this model but I'm towards the end of bag set 5 out of 7 and I keep coming across missing pieces. First I thought it was me, not having used LEGO for many years, but even with careful organisation of the pieces and opening bags 1 first, 2 and then so on.... I'm still finding a lot of pieces not supplied. This is hugely disappointing as now the project is essentially on 'hold' until the pieces are supplied by LEGO. However, I now see a message saying missing pieces won't be supplied until end of January. I can understand longer times around Christmas but this seems ludicrous and I have not come across this problem with any other retailer. The model itself looks great and I'm sure will be a lot of fun when finished but I suspect that will be some time in February. Overall: would be great but at the moment poor and incomplete thanks to multiple missing pieces. For such an expensive product I would have expected better.

In the world of Doctor ...

By iReckon

from Undisclosed

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Death Star (10188):

In the world of Doctor Who, it’s readily accepted that insides and outsides can exist in different dimensions, and that different time zones can be visited as easily as if they were different places. If you can swallow such conceits, then you’re likely to share my view that LEGO’s Death Star playset is one of the greatest LEGO sets ever released in any range. Whilst its half-hearted exterior couldn’t hope to measure up to that of the majesty of the Death Star II ultimate collector’s edition set, its movie-hopping interior boasts more genuine detail and finesse features than the total sum of previous Star Wars LEGO offerings. It is, quite simply, a masterpiece of a model. When this near four-thousand piece set arrived, the first thing that I did was to assemble its twenty-four minifigures, as recommended by the first of its heavy, ring-bound instruction manuals. Any Star Wars character of note who ever set foot on board either of the Empire’s ill-fated battle stations is included here, and some of them in more than one incarnation. Luke Skywalker, for instance, appears in three different guises â€" firstly, in his farm boy outfit from Tatooine; secondly, in a unique stormtrooper outfit; and thirdly, as a fully-fledged, mechanical-appendage-sporting, black-clad Jedi Knight. Han Solo, similarly, appears in an exclusive stormtrooper outfit as well as his usual attire, alongside his constant companion Chewbacca; an Episode IV-styled Princess Leia; a cloaked Obi-Wan Kenobi; and the saga’s seminal droid duo, C-3PO and R2-D2. Death Star stalwarts Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin are present and correct too, as is the hard-to-find Emperor Palpatine, here equipped with his Return of the Jedi lightening. The minifigure count is than rounded out with a couple of stormtroopers; a brace of rare, red-clad royal guards; and no fewer than four imperial droids. Whilst it’s true that many of the minifigures included in this set have been improved upon since (particularly Luke and Leia), there is still not a set that stands up to this one when it comes to the quantity and quality of its minifigures. Building the Death Star itself was an even more rewarding experience though, particularly as I eked it out over a few weeks, tackling one of the set’s four internal boxes at a time (at £274.99, I had to make it last). Once the foundations were in place, the first floor offered all manner of tantalising treasures, including the infamous ‘trash compactor’ (complete with compacting walls and Dianoga monster); tractor beam control room; and gaping chasm across which Luke and Leia must swing. As the build progressed, I didn’t only get the satisfaction of being able to build superlative second floor rooms such as the ‘Vader vs Obi-Wan’ hanger bay; throne room; and detention block, but also the pleasure of seeing how they interrelated with the rooms already constructed. The detention block, for instance, boasts a rubbish chute that leads, as it should, to the trash compactor; the throne room, meanwhile, is equipped with a fully-functional lift. Even the set’s top tier, which stands only half as tall as the two below it, was not without reward as it allowed me to recreate the moment where Vader choked one of his subordinates around the conference table (“I find your lack of faith disturbing…â€), not to mention that in which he loomed behind the overconfident Tarkin as the Rebel base honed into view on the monitor before them (which can easily be flipped round to be replaced by an image of the doomed Alderaan, depending how destructive you’re feeling). The gigantic space station is colossal once assembled, taking up a nearly half a square metre wherever it’s set down. Naturally, I lament the absence of an exterior â€" LEGO could have finished the model with a series of hinged grey walls to provide a more authentic finish without taking too much away from the playability of the spectacular interior, but even so, this set’s finished model is as clearly the Death Star as LEGO’s intricately-detailed ultimate collector’s edition display piece. How could it not be with that menacing green death ray extruding from its distinguishing dish?

Bad set to start with...

By PShmeg

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Death Star (10188):

After several years nurturing the love of lego in my nephew and niece, I finally conceded that I was the one who really wanted lego. Unfortunately I made a grave mistake by making the death star my first purchase. This set is enormous, complicated and full of fun details taken directly from the films. Having completed this set, I find that I'm hunting for more complicated models. However this set really is the pinnacle of lego building so nothing every set thereafter is found wanting in comparison. I highly recommend this set for experienced lego builders. For novices, I suggest you build up to the death star and cut your teeth on the smaller models first.

Dissapointing Purchase

By BobMcboberson

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Death Star (10188):

I was very excited to get this product, after saving up a whopping $500, but not too excited when I built it. Here are my pros and cons: PROS: -Tons of playability -Very big -Many minifigures -Cool features -Many accessories -Mini Tie Fighter CONS: -WAY too fragile, and easily breakable -Really overpriced for what you get -Lame to build Here are my opinions: It is quite expensive, I would lower the price to AT LEAST $300. I would've liked the set to have some build variety too. It also has a weak frame; it should be more strong. Overall, I don't recommend this unless you are a crazy Star Wars fanatic, or if you like filming Lego stop motions. (because their is lots of standing space) I would buy other collectors sets such as the London Tower Bridge first. 6\10!

Bang for your buck

By Rangerfreak

from Menlo Park

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Death Star (10188):

I got this set for Christmas, didn't ask for it, parents sprung it on me. At first it was incredibly overstimulating, huge box, tons of minifigs, high expectations. When I finally got around to opening it, I really likes the organization within the box. In the box are four smaller boxes, white, and the size of maybe a 30-40 dollar set, that contains different numbered packages of pieces. Everything went smoothly until the second level. While building the hangar, I was missing a 4x8 (I think) black plate. I had one spare but many people may not. Other than that, my only other thought (but would be expected with this set) is how repetitive it was. Each layer has the same build pattern, with small alterations. Overall, great playability, fairly good value, nice set.

Not bad, but not good.

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Death Star (10188):

I love Lego, like most people. And like most fans, I love Lego Star Wars. But unfortunately, this Lego set did not seem to please me like it would with other sets. This is something more attached to children around 10 to 13, but for those who are "brickmasters", this may not be the recommended set. Besides, there's no way this can beat the Death Star II Lego set. Sorry to cause any disagreements with others.

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Death Star (10188):

I have wanted this set ever since it came out. When I got it I was so happy. This set has so much playability and it is so iconic. From the prison when Leia was freed in episode 4, to the Trash compactor and of course, the Super laser. I wish everybody had this set, they would be so happy :)

while it was challenging to build it was worth it. love the details and all the moving parts. Way too pricey! only reason I broke down to buy it was because my grandson had asked for it for the past 4 years.
