Product Description

Moms who have flat/inverted nipples, or who suffer from engorgement can benefit from wearing breastshells. Breastshells are used by moms whose babies may have difficulty latching on to the nipple to nurse. Shells for this situation have a smaller hole in the back, that are worn over the nipples to help draw the nipple out.
This and all items from Medela are excluded from all promotions and discounts except where otherwise noted on product detail pages.

Features

  • Soft, flexible silicone backs for maximum comfort
  • Contoured fronts for discreet appearance
  • For treating inverted nipples or engorgement

I would have easily quit breastfeeding if it weren't for these Soft Shells. I have both the one for Inverted Nipples and Sore Nipples. I first got the one for Sore Nipples and found they had multiple uses. So the difference between the Sore Nipple Soft Shell and the Inverted Nipple Soft Shell is the size of the hole that your nipple goes into. The Inverted Nipple Soft Shell has a smaller hole. I've found that despite the difference in the size of hole in the back of these two products, both the Inverted Nipple and Sore Nipple Soft Shells have the following uses:

    1) Keeps sore nipples open to air so that they can heal sooner.
    2) Keeps sore nipples from rubbing against clothing.
    3) Using foam inserts helps absorb milk from leaking nipples.
    4) Use without foam inserts helps to collect milk which you can store for later use.
    5) The Inverted Nipple Soft Shells pushes out the inverted nipple over time.

So #4 is a use that I discovered on my own, but it has been the most important use for me! Whenever I breastfeed from one breast, the other breast leaks A LOT. So I started to put one Soft Shell on the breast that baby is not latched on to collect the leaking milk. Then after the feeding I store the collected milk for later use in either the fridge or freezer. (I use Medela Storage Bags.) The Soft Shells are BPA free and I make sure to clean the nipple are prior to collecting the leaking milk to reduce contamination. This use, though not listed in the package inserts, has saved me so much of my liquid gold! I have been able to save anywhere from 5 to 10 ounces per day from just the leaking nipple! Now for this collection process I prefer the Inverted Nipple Soft Shell over the Sore Nipple Soft Shells because of the smaller hole. The smaller hole allows for more milk collection. I noticed with the larger hole some of the milk would fall out from overflow creating quite a mess.

But for the inverted nipple, I would also recommend Medela's Nipple Contact Shield which helps the baby latch onto the inverted nipple. I found this product to be most useful because my baby would get very frustrated from not being able to latch right away on the inverted nipple.

Extremely disappointed in this product. I don't even see how it serves a purpose. I Bought these with the assumption that they would work "miracles" because of all the great reviews I read about these. First of all, when I read "soft shell", I'm thinking the product is made from a SOFT material like silicone...but no, it's HARD plastic. That makes no sense. Second of all, when I read that it's for "inverted nipples", I'm thinking the product will have some sort of suction to pull the nipple out since an inverted nipple folds IN when stimulated. These HARD plastic shells simply sit on top of your nipple letting it poke through a hole, not helping at all. I will be extremely ticked off if I can't return this waste of money product.

I think these are great..... During my first nursing experience I had very sore nipples. I remember bleeding of how badly i hurt myself trying to latch my baby on. These were a life saver for me cause they allowed my nipples to heal by preventing any more friction of my nipples with my clothing. The only cons of this product is that they do show through thin clothing especially if you have larger breast. I stayed home during the first months so this was not an issue for me. I also found that it was necessary to wash them daily with hot water and soap.

I am pregnant with my second child, had lots of problems with nursing the first one, thanks to my short nipples. I ended up with using the breast pump only with my first son. I am about 38 weeks pregnant, I've been using this product for three days now (only at night, for a few hours before it starts bothering me), and I can actually see the difference!
When you put it on for the first time, it makes you wonder (and definitely doubt) that it'll work, but just follow the instructions, line the hole up against the tip of your nipple, and watch it grow into it!
Wearing it is not too bad, it does feel uncomfortable and itchy after some time, but it is a small price to pay!

This product was great for sore nipples, I did not have flat or inverted nipples. I had been in TERRIBLE pain for a week before buying the shields that came with the foam absorbing insert. They helped air out and keep pressure off of the nipples. It allowed them to heal. After a few more days everything was healed. I am an OB nurse and I had a lactation consultant check out my baby's latch. Everything was fine. This was even baby number 2. I highly recommend this product. The only con is learning not to bend over, the milk leaked into the shield then would come out the air vents on top if I bent over.

I didn't have inverted nipples but I made so much milk when it first came in I would have to change my nursing pads about every 30 min. I bought these thinking they looked like good "milk harvesters". I would put these in and let them fill then i would dump it in the bottles. It worked out great! So while they do work for inverted nipples and sore nipples they also improvise in my case. ;-)

They gave these to me in the hospital the first day after delivery because I had "short nipples." They worked great to help pull out my nipples so my son could latch on easier. I didn't need them long after we came home and my milk came in, but they helped tremendously those first 10 days or so.

These little guys kept me breasfeeding! As a first time mom, I had no idea what to expect when it came to breastfeeding. Boy, was I in for a suprise! I had no idea it would be so painful but my husband was searching the internet and found these soft shells. If he wouldn't have found these, I think I probably would have quit breastfeeding. They were a real lifesaver when it came to getting through the first three weeks of breastfeeding! I would definately recommend them to every breastfeeding mother!!! Just be careful and use an extra bra pad on the outside, I had a tendancy to fill up the shell and it would leak.

I do not have inverted nipples but used these to keep the bra fabric away from tender nipples. there is nothing worse than having to peel your bra off your nipple when you are tender from nursing!! ouch! These are great! Definitely recommend purchasing before you have your baby so you have them on hand. everyone gets sore in the beginning!
