LEGO Creationary Game System. Roll the LEGO Dice to select one of four exciting building categories: vehicles, buildings, nature or things. With three levels of difficulty you can show off your building skills, while the others guess what you are creating. A great game for family and friends to test your imagination, creativity, building and guessing skills to the max.

To be able to understand why LEGO has been successful for so long, just look to the name. LEGO originally got its name from founder Ole Kirk Christiansen by combining the Danish words Leg Got that means play well and later realized that the word LEGO in Latin translates to I put together. The LEGO set became a standard of creative play for children around the world, unlocking the creativity to build vehicles, buildings, cities and more. Most historians point to the invention of the wheel as a major turning point in world history. The invention of the LEGO wheel had the same monumental effect in the history of LEGO, making it possible to create cars, trucks and eventually the LEGO train building set that is one of the most successful LEGO sets of all time. LEGO innovation continues to this day with product lines like DUPLO that was created in 1969 for smaller hands and still thrives. Movie tie-ins, such as LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Indiana Jones Adventures and LEGO SpongeBob are some of the most popular sets. The Sci-Fi LEGO Bionicle sets have a huge following but the number one selling LEGO set of all time is The LEGO Mindstorms Robotics Invention System. Over 1 million of these sets were sold around the world. In 2009 LEGO introduces the next generation LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0! LEGO currently produces about 20 billion LEGO bricks a year and has sold over 400 billion LEGOs in their history - enough for every person on the planet to have over 60 LEGOs each!

INTRODUCTION As the title of my review implies, at least one player in the group that agrees to play Creationary must have some expertise with LEGO elements. This expertise should include knowing which elements to find to make particular shapes, how parts can connect to reasonably represent sections of an object, and familiarity with the selection of elements in this game. (That last part can be ignored with a strategic visit to the online Pick A Brick store to add more elements to this game.) Additionally, all players of this game must have some degree of imagination and visual-spatial skills (i.e., the ability to think in 3-D). Now, with those precautions in mind, let's proceed to my actual review. BOX The box of this game is very large, about 1.5 times the length of Minotaurus's box, with the same width and depth. Creationary's box also opens like Minotaurus's box, coming apart in two pieces: upper and lower. IN THE BOX Inside Creationary's box, there are several bags with pieces, each of a different size relative to the pieces inside. The LEGO Dice was the only piece outside the bags. (See my Minotaurus review for a more thorough description of the bouncy rubber and plastic LEGO Dice.) To be quite honest, I was not entirely satisfied with the way the parts were packed--I would have saved time if LEGO had pre-sorted the pieces by color (as the instructions indicate) rather than by size. The selection of parts is similar to what comes with modern LEGO sets--mostly bricks and plates with quite a few special elements, such as wheels and bearings, hinges, turntables, brackets, clip plates, and even a black rubber hose. There is also one minifigure with dark brown hair, as well as one microfigure. In addition, there are numerous transparent pieces, including 1x1 and 2x2 round bricks in clear and transparent yellow, clear 1x2 bricks, clear 2x2 slopes, transparent red and blue 1x1 round plates, and a new version of the classic flame element. Instead of two small pegs at right angles to each other at the base of the flame, there is now a solid circle. Without those pegs in the way, the new flame element can fit better into TECHNIC axleholes. Another new piece in Creationary is quite bizarre to me--the solid red 1x1 round plates in this set now have an extra thin rim on the bottom, giving the part a new shape. Look at the bottom of one of these plates to see what I mean. Ironically, none of the other 1x1 round plates in my game have this feature. This change to the red 1x1 round plates seems to make them slightly looser than their predecessors, which is good for easy removal, but may not be so good for delicate structures. Besides the LEGO elements, the picture cards, and the playing instructions (there are no building instructions aside from those for the LEGO Dice, hence the need for imagination stated earlier), there is also a sorting tray for the LEGO elements, which is barely big enough to fit all of the elements. The tray has 13 compartments (9 large and 4 small). 8 of the large compartments are meant to hold the larger elements, while the last one holds the cards. I used the smaller compartments for the transparent elements, wheels, figures, and 1x1 round plates. A major problem with the tray is that the compartments are quite shallow, and there is a huge space in between the top of the tray and the box lid that may let elements jump between compartments (or outside the tray) if the box isn't handled carefully. I always hold my box level to keep the pieces in their compartments. MY GAMEPLAY EXPERIENCE In my house, it is quite difficult to gather the recommended minimum of three players for Creationary, so I adapted the game for two players. In my mode of play, the other player and I just switched the builder and guesser roles. I limited the number of guesses to three, and if a player guessed correctly before running out of guesses, a point was awarded, and the other player became the guesser. After a set amount of time, the player with the most correct guesses was the winner. Most of the models we built were fairly small--if they were sets, they would retail for about 2 to 4 dollars each. By the way, I uploaded a model bird I built in Creationary to the LEGO Creator 3D gallery--check it out! SUGGESTIONS Another option for the "Use your imagination" provision could be to create more picture cards for the game, using index cards and/or printing them from a computer. Actually, that would be a great idea for an expansion pack--LEGO could release extra cards online to be printed out using a color printer with duplex (printing on both sides) capability. The cards could be cut out from the paper and integrated into the game. Besides picking up other elements from the online Pick A Brick store and adapting the game for two players, I highly recommend purchasing a brick separator with this game. Your fingernails, teeth, and the LEGO elements in this game will thank you. OVERALL +Pros+ + Good box design + Decent element selection + Sorting tray + LEGO Dice + Changeable rules + Can be adapted for two players + Enjoyable play experience -Cons- - Those who aren't familiar with LEGO elements may struggle with this game (you should help newcomers out with your knowledge!) - Sorting tray may cause pieces to jump between compartments *Final Verdict* I highly recommend Creationary, but don't forget the brick separator--it's a vital accessory! Also, Pick A Brick is your friend for expanding this game's possibilities.

My son received this for Christmas from Santa. I used to play with Legos myself as a young man so I am very good at putting Legos together. The game is fun but a lot of the items that you have to put together are difficult because the set doesn't have all the different pieces to build with.
Example- you have to build a rose but there aren't enough red pieces to make it with.
This game is very fun but young ones get discouraged easily. My son is 9 and enjoys it. I would recommend this game for kids 9-up that have experience in building large Lego sets.

Comments about Lego 1001617 LEGO Games Creationary (3844):

This was recommended to me by a friend because her family had such a good time with it. She sold it to me as pictionary but with legos which is pretty much how it works. My eight yr old son is Lego obsessed so I knew he would like it, but it also offers different difficulty levels so that our younger girls and my husband and I all enjoy playing. It has definitely earned a spot in our weekly game night rotation.

They must use their imagination to look at a picture on a card, build what the picture would look like with the Legos provided & others guest. It is a game the whole family can play. We even use our other Lego products to help out.
