With the many negative reviews out there, initially I was uninterested in the Nerf Mega Centurion. Based on my very positive impressions of the Cycloneshock, however, I became more intrigued by the Mega line. When the TrU-exclusive Sonic Ice Centurion went on sale, it was time to bite the (foam) bullet and add it to the arsenal.

Don't buy the bad blurbs; this blue blaster is da BOMB.

The most vitriolic Centurion reviews were based on the earliest (Summer 2013) releases, of which more than a few apparently had loading & jamming problems that led to shredded darts-- no small issue due to the more expensive Mega darts.

These issues may actually have been addressed by Hasbro at some point, as the complaints dropped off significantly. Personally, I've had no such problems with my Sonic Ice Centurion.

Other common complaints centered on the "unwieldiness" of this very big blaster, "inconsistent performance", and the lack of potential modifications.

First, complaining that this blaster is too difficult to wield is like saying that a football is too difficult to shoot into a basketball hoop.

If you need a blaster for close-quarters battling or lugging over long distances, there are plenty of better-suited models available. Portability and maneuverability are not the Centurion's strong points, and they're not designed to be.

Like the Longshot and Longstrike, the Centurion is of the "sniper rifle" variety, intended to be used with its solid and smart-looking bi-pod, lying low in a prone position, and firing at distant targets. In that regard, it is an improvement over previous Nerf "sniper" models, gaining greater distances and with more darts landing closer to the intended target.

Which brings us to the "inconsistency" complaints. Catastrophic failures not withstanding, the idea of "Nerf performance" is a bit of an oxymoron. Given the parameters that Hasbro has to work within to produce a projectile-firing toy that is both fun and safe for (sometimes very) young children, these mass-produced foam dart blasters are never going to be able to achieve the kind of "performance" evident in other "tagging" hobbies such as paintball and airsoft. Expectations of dead-on accuracy, surgical precision, and un-erring consistency in a Nerf blaster are simply misplaced. These are toys. Enjoy them as such.

That being said, the Mega line goes a long way toward improving those qualities in comparison to the "lower caliber" Nerf darts like Elites, Streamlines, and Universal Suction Darts. Simply due to the size and mass of Mega darts, they're going to fly farther and hit harder. The Centurion's extra-long barrel adds to dart flight stability, even if velocity is sacrificed somewhat. But this trade-off has always been evident in long-barreled blasters, and citing it as a reason to avoid the Centurion ignores that fact.

Finally, to the "lack of mod potential" complaints. In my opinion, this is a non-issue and especially irrelevant in a review being posted on the TrU site.

Once again, like all Nerf blasters the Centurion is a TOY. I'm only interested in and commenting on it's out-of-the-box "toyness" factors, not how easily it will succumb to some demented "Frankenstein" vision I might entertain.

Yes, it has the dreaded reverse plunger instead of the much-favored direct plunger. Why I don't know, as the main reason for using a reverse plunger system is to save space, which shouldn't have been a concern of Hasbro designers and engineers at all, given the size of this monster.

In my experience, however, this doesn't seem to be a hindrance for the Centurion, as the 90-100' ranges are definitely (if not "consistently") achievable.

As far as "cosmetic" modification barriers go (integrated stock, proprietary and near-permanent barrel "extension"), I can only ask... "why?" The Sonic Ice blue version of the Centurion is so big & beautiful, the idea of removing any of its components, slathering it in layers of paint, or hacking at it with a Dremel is beyond ludicrous.

Honestly, I suspect much of the initial hate for the Centurion was due less to the nature of its supposed "problems" (many of which were common limitations shared across the Nerf line), and more to the fact that it required Nerf "enthusiasts"-- who'd previously amassed an armory's worth of Streamline and Elite rounds that fit most if not all of the blasters in their arsenal-- to suddenly go out and spend their allowance on differently-sized ammo; ammo that was Mega-proprietary and significantly more expensive.

I suppose that's a fair complaint. But it's no reason to trash the functionality and enjoy-ability of what is, in and of itself, a very fine addition to the Nerf brand, and the flagship in a product line that is poised to revolutionize the hobby (see the Magnus, Cycloneshock, and upcoming Rotofury).

As the Mega line continues to improve, I'll wager there will be more folks giving the Centurion a second look. They'd be well-advised to do so.

TL;DR - it's big, blue, and mega-cool. Highly recommended.

We received the product and it looked great! My son had an outstanding 6 weeks of school and this was his reward. We waited the required 8 day shipping, he used it one time. Now it will not it will not fire and the loading mechanism does not stay cocked back completely and the trigger will not release.

Comments about Hasbro 1001119 NERF N-Strike Elite Sonic Ice Centurion Blaster:

My son is enjoying this but it does not quite live up to the hype. It's not quite a long range "sniper" rifle as you may think. Most shots are short of the advertised distance, especially the first two shots of the magazine.

Comments about Hasbro 1001119 NERF N-Strike Elite Sonic Ice Centurion Blaster:

This was bought as a birthday present for a 13 YO, at his request. He has been delighted with it. This Nerf gun is sold primarily as one with greater firing range, able to hit targets further away. What my son found was that the benefit had more to do with the longer barrel and greater accuracy. Either way, it has a very long range, and, seriously, don't let your kids shoot it at one another's faces. My son accidentally shot my husband in the face, and he was thisclose to a split lip. That was from down the hall! The loading mechanism feels a little cheap (which is why I went with 4 stars), but, honestly, we're probably getting to the end of Nerf battles, so the gun is likely to survive long enough to reach retirement.

Great toy for a child 8-9 years old because of its size. It's a big upgrade to the smaller nerf guns that are available. Does not seem to be as strong as it long a and doesn't "hit" harr

Comments about Hasbro 1001119 NERF N-Strike Elite Sonic Ice Centurion Blaster:

It's more of a looks gun, to be honest. Being a reverse plunger system, it is more finicky than other Nerf guns. But, it's a big "sniper" looking gun that shoots mega darts. How can that be bad?! It's awesome, I just recommend priming it slowly and fully as to avoid jamming your blaster.
