I was initially disappointed in the topic coverage the product supplies--there is no counting above 10, and in kindergarten (half-day in a public school, not a Montessori program or other advanced learning center, by any means), my daughter is already expected to be able to recognize and count up to 99. The first book, then, while it took her some time to master because she couldn't read the directions and wanted to do it on her own, was almost more like pre-k.

That said, once I moved her on to Book 2, the focus number-wise is more on basic addition and subtraction, but the majority of the second book is on other concepts her class is learning, patterns, shape recognition, and sequences, plus coin-counting and time-telling that they have not addressed yet but with which she is faintly familiar with from an online learning game we use as well. I do feel like it has given her an extra bit of help really understanding the concepts being presented in class.

The only downside is that (at least with the first book) I am pretty sure she just memorized what responses gave her positive feedback rather than actually thinking through the problems... but she also played with the book so much before I let her move on (keen to her random pressing with the doggy 'pen', just as she random-clicks on web games) that she did actually absorb the lessons to a greater degree than I had expected. It is a very basic unit... there's a code or something embedded in the page marking the correct answers, and when the child clicks the right answer, the dog's eyes flash green and he cheers in one way or another. Click anywhere else--the wrong answer, the table, your hand--and he whimpers, whines, and flashes red. The one thing I would have improved would be if it could read the instructions on a page aloud to the child, but that would require something more advanced. She just needed me to explain directions a few times is all.

There is, however, VOLUME CONTROL, which I was oh so very grateful for when she was clicking all over the place. LOL

All in all, we're happy with the product. I received it at no cost to myself in exchange for a review and I chose the math game because she was struggling with math at the time. She's now better at math than at reading and I'm wishing I had the reading game to give her next, if that tells you how much we like it. :-) Too bad there's not one to teach listening and following directions! Every kindergarten parent on the planet would be after that one.

My first-grade son received this. It comes in a box with a handle for easy transport and storage. Inside are two fifty-page, spiral-bound, laminated books of reading and language arts questions and the Hot Dots pen. Each page contains two questions. There are 85 pages of regular questions and 15 pages of more advanced ones. Topics covered are reading comprehension, synonyms & antonyms, homophones & multiple-meaning words, context clues, spelling, and punctuation & grammar. Two AAA batteries required for the pen aren't included. The pen is interchangeable and can be used with other Hot Dots books.

Children read the questions and use the pen to choose their answer. If the answer is correct, it lights up green and makes positive sounds, if it's wrong, it lights up red and makes negative sounds. One button on the pen is used to select the type of sounds. You can choose speech, sound effects, or a combination. The second button changes the volume level to low, high, or mute.

My son really liked the concept of Hot Dots. However, he found even most of the advanced questions to be too easy. He said that these topics were covered in first grade, and it shouldn't be rated for second-grade use. A problem he had with the pen was that if you don't hold it straight up and down and put it in the center of the dot, it sometimes told him he was wrong, even though he answered correctly. This was frustrating to him.

Overall, I like the concept of this product. It makes learning fun, and kids can do this independently. Parents don't have to hound their children with questions. This can be used while traveling, waiting for an appointment, or even at a restaurant with the sound muted. However, I feel this is not at a second-grade level, which is why I only gave it three stars. If your child is testing at grade level or higher, I would order this product at least one or two years above their current grade. EI sent me this product in exchange for an honest review.

Wonderful product! I was disappointed that the skills in the Kindergarten math books were very basic. My 5 1/2 year old daughter only found the money and telling time to be a little challenging.

My daughter is in first grade, but we got her the grade 2 Let's Master Reading because she's 7-1/2, and she's an advanced reader. The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars was because some of the content was still too easy for her. The part she really enjoyed was the reading comprehension section. I wish there was more. Also, plurals were somewhat of a challenge for her, so that was good. Additionally, I like the multiple choice format, which should help her with standardized testing once she gets to 3rd grade.

Comments about Educational Insights Hot Dots Let's Master Grade 2 Reading Set with Talking Pen:

My daughter had fun playing with this. She is in first grade, but reads quite a bit above grade level, but she still had fun playing with this set. She liked hearing the different sound effects and trying to figure out how the pen worked. I only wish the pen had come with an initial set of batteries. It seems like a lot of battery-operated toys come with an initial set of batteries to get started anymore, so that would be my only recommendation.

I have two children ages 7 and 9. They were immediately intrigued by this item. They love the interactive pen and the immediate feedback it gives. The kit comes with 2 spiral bound books with 85 lessons and 15 advanced lessons plus the interactive talking pen. The skills covered include reading comprehension, synonyms and antonyms, homophones and multiple meaning words, context clues, spelling, and punctuation and grammar. The skills are a good stretch for my 1st grader and a great review for my 3rd grader. I have left it sit out and a number of times the kids will pick it up on their own and play with it for a few minutes. I look forward to using it this summer as we continue to review skills. It keeps the interest of children in a wide age range (we had a friends 2nd grade daughter over and she played with this over an hour).

**I was sent a copy for free in exchange for my honest review.

The Hot Dots Let's Master Grade 2 Reading set is fun for my kids to play with. In this set, you receive two spiral bound books and a Hot Dots pen. The Hot Dots pen allows the child to instantly know if the answer he chose is correct. If you are correct, the pen will light up green and say a congratulatory phrase. If you are wrong, it will light up red and say that you were wrong. There is a volume control on the pen, and it even allows you to turn the sound off. With the sound off, this makes a great quiet activity.
The books are 50 pages each. The pages are durable. Included in the books are the following skills: punctuation, capital letters, reading comprehension, plurals, spelling, contractions, prefixes, suffixes, context clues, synonyms, antonyms, and homophones. The second book also included multiple meaning words and a number of challenge problems. I love that the skills are mixed up in the books and they are all color coded so if you want to focus on just one skill it is easy to find.
Overall, I think this is a great set. My daughter is in first grade, and though some of it is a little too hard for her right now, she still enjoys it and will be able to use it for some time.

My 7 y/o enjoyed playing and learning with this toy. It comes with an interactive pen and 2 books. The books are broken up in different categories, such as reading comprehension, prefixes and suffixes, punctuation, and capitalization. The pen and books were easy for him to use. He was excited when he would get the answers correct!

Hot Dots Jr. Math has been fabulous for my Kindergartners. They use it independently with very little help from me. They like that it tells them if they are correct or incorrect. The skills are tied to our Learning Objectives and are age-appropriate. I have two children work on the Hot Dots Jr. together during centers time. It really is a "Top Choice" in my classroom.
