Product Description

The Dr. Brown's Specialty Feeding System® is a unique bottle/nipple/valve system designed specifically to assist in the management and treatment of complicated oral feeding issues. This bottle system will be beneficial for infants and bottle-fed children identified with severe to profound difficulty in efficiently expressing a fluid bolus during sucking. Infants with the following conditions - cleft lip/palate, oro-neuromotor dysfunctions, congenital heart disease, common or rare syndromic sequences and/or craniofacial anomalies will demonstrate strong outcomes while using the Dr. Brown's Specialty Feeding System®. The unidirectional flow valve known as the "Infant-Paced Feeding Valve®" is inserted into the silicone nipple at the nipple base and placed into the collar. Once full assembly of the Dr. Brown's Specialty Feeding System® is complete this system allows the infant to use their own tongue and jaw movements during sucking to adequately express and deliver a fluid bolus into their intra-oral space for safe and efficient swallowing. Medical professionals parents/caregivers are not required for guiding the infants feeding through continuous squeezing or manipulating of the bottle to dispense a specific amount of liquid into the infant's mouth. The use of the Infant-Paced Feeding Valve® eliminates the need to use oral facial manual interventions such as chin and cheek support known to facilitate an increase in intra-oral pressure. The infant's ability to independently express fluid from the nipple decreases the risk of developing oral feeding sensory defensiveness/intolerance or feeding refusal/aversion. The feeding becomes "infant-directed" and allows the infant to feed safely, efficiently and successfully. The Dr. Brown's Natural Flow® bottle is fully vented to create a positive-pressure flow for vacuum-free feeding.

Features

  • Includes two 8 Ounce bottles, 2 level 1 nipples, 2 level 2 nipples, 2 infant paced feeding valves, 1 cleaning brush
  • Designed specifically to assist in the management and treatment of complicated oral feeding issues
  • Accomplishes "Infant-Directed" feedings
  • Positive feeding experiences - efficient, successful and safe
  • Non-specialty feeding bottle design that includes the Infant-Paced Feeding Valve

I went to Children's Mercy Hospital (Kansas City) for my 1-month-old son's first visit. He has Apert's Syndrome and with that a very high arch to the roof of his mouth and a small cleft of his soft palet. He was having a hard time feeding from a bottle...but tried hard. (The NICU he was released from had placed a G-tube to help maintain nutrition). The nutritionist and OT tried this feeding system and he ate 2.5 ounces on his first try! He has continued to eat 2.5-3oz at every feeding since. THANKS DR. BROWN'S!!!!

For our first cleft child, born in 2010, we fit the Pigeon brand cleft palate Y cut nipple and valve onto a Dr. Brown's bottle. The venting system worked well with the Y cut nipple and valve, except the fit was not perfect and unless we tilted the valve, it would leak. For our second cleft child, born in 2016, we were so pleased that Dr. Brown's came up with its own valve. The problem is that after 2 weeks our big boy outgrew the Level 1 nipple (too slow and doctor said he wasn't gaining enough weight), BUT Level 2, 3, or 4 nipples would drip automatically once the bottle was inverted, flooding his mouth when he was taking a break and choking him with a flood of milk. Following the example of the use of the Y cut nipple in the Pigeon system, we decided to try the Dr. Brown's Y cut nipple. They worked perfectly when they were new. The milk didn't flow when he wasn't pressing. It gave him the breaks he needed. The PROBLEM is that Y cut nipples would TEAR so easily. We have been through 12 nipples in the past 6 weeks. The last few we've been treating with such care when washing. They still tore. Further the Y cuts are off-center and not completely cut through when new. It's as if the Y cut variety were an afterthought, and the nipple material was not designed to handle Y cuts. As soon as the cuts got bigger, the flow would be too much for the baby and the choking and sputtering would start again. This is totally unacceptable. If you're going to make a product, it should last more than 4 days before they break.

Unbelievably grateful for this product!

By HappyMom

from Arizona

Comments about Dr. Browns Dr. Brown's 8 Ounce 2 Pack Standard Specialty Feeding Bottle System:

My daughter was born with a cleft palette and wasn't able to breastfeed. We were using a Habermann's bottle, and it worked well but hurt my hand to use for extended periods. My daughter was also frequently frustrated with our under or over estimates of how much milk to make flow. This bottle literally changed our lives and alieviated one source of stress to an already stressful process. I also had the pleasure of working with their customer service department when I couldn't find something specific I was looking for- they were EXCELLENT! They explained why I couldn't find it and give me an alternative solution that was even better than what I was trying to do! I would absolutely recommend this bottle to anyone with specialty feeding needs and it makes me want to cry when I think about what a wonderful effect this system has had on our feedings.

Life-saving

Comments about Dr. Browns Dr. Brown's 8 Ounce 2 Pack Standard Specialty Feeding Bottle System:

Our daughter was born with a cleft palate. At two days old we introduced her to the Dr. Brown's bottle with the venting system. There is no need for her to suck (which she can't do), all she does is bite down on the nipple and the milk squirts into her mouth. After mourning the loss of being able to breastfeed and getting over the shock of our baby's early struggles, we are grateful to have this product available to us and our perfect little girl. She has been eating well and gaining weight like a champ.

Comments about Dr. Browns Dr. Brown's 8 Ounce 2 Pack Standard Specialty Feeding Bottle System:

My daughter was born with HLHS, since day one we've had issues with feeding and she was inserted with a gtube because anything taken by bottle would just come back up and wasd really causing digestive issues. We tried the Dr Brown bottles and everything has turned around. They are awsome, the vent of air release is really helping her. I've recommended them to all my friends with newborns

A life saver!

Comments about Dr. Browns Dr. Brown's 8 Ounce 2 Pack Standard Specialty Feeding Bottle System:

I had some relatives buy them for me from US as thery weren't available here in Egypt, my son was born with a complete left unilateral cleft lip and palate. At the hospital they used another bottle type locally made and it was horrible and it even hurt his gums and made them bleed, once we were out of the hospital I started using Dr brown's speciality feeding bottles with nipple 1 and it was a life saver!! My Lo started gaining weight and eating better then we moved to nipple 2 and I cant thank you enough for saving my boy's life and making our lives way easier, I just wish they'd be available here in Egypt cuz not everyone can buy them from abroad and there are about 3500 cases of clefties every year here in Egypt.

Comments about Dr. Browns Dr. Brown's 8 Ounce 2 Pack Standard Specialty Feeding Bottle System:

My son was born with a Bilateral cleft lip and palate. We were given the haberman nipples in the hospital. He wasn't eating very good at all. It would take him an hour to eat .5 ounce. I ordered these praying that he would be able to eat better and he did. He was able to eat 2 ounces in 5-10 minutes. We've had them a a week and he's already gained 10 ounces. We also bought Dr. Browns pacifier and he was able to hold it in his mouth on his own. highly recommend Dr. Browns. My new favorite brand.

Great bottles!!

By Adelaide

Comments about Dr. Browns Dr. Brown's 8 Ounce 2 Pack Standard Specialty Feeding Bottle System:

I received some sample specialty bottles before my daughter was born last year as we found out she was going to be born with a complete unilateral cleft lip and palate at our 20wk ultrasound. These bottles are an absolute godsend and I would definitely recommend them to any other parents who are experiencing feeding issues with their precious babies!

Great for Preemie with Weak Suck-Swallow

By annfletch

from Philadelphia, PA, United States

Comments about Dr. Browns Dr. Brown's 8 Ounce 2 Pack Standard Specialty Feeding Bottle System:

These are great for my 26 week preemie! He was just (finally) released from the NICU last week after almost 5 months (adjusted age 8 weeks). He's been feeding well and gaining weight with the use of these valves. I just wish the replacement valves were easier to find. We left the hospital with about a dozen bottles but only 3 valves.
