We were sent this item to review. We honestly love it and it has gone to the top of our everyday use pile for the last several weeks.

This toy is simple, but it fills a unique need for our family. Our three year old son has hypotonia (low/poor muscle control) and has great difficulty manipulating objects in his hands. He lags behind his peers for tasks like cutting with scissors, drawing simple shapes, mimicking visual set-ups (such as copying how we make a simple lego construction), etc. We really liked this toy because it helped him use all of his deficit areas while playing- it's simply a great therapy tool and it's a lot of fun for him as well. We like to play alongside him, sitting on opposite sides and he has to copy what we make. Squeezing and holding the drill after aligning it to the peg is a good challenge. After the screws are in place, he enjoys turning out the light to see what it looks like. We have had a two-year-old friend come over and do very well using it, and really enjoyed it. Our son also enjoys using the drill on other objects in our house along the rest of his play tools. He likes that he can see inside.

This toy is challenging enough for him and his needs. I can see an older child perhaps wanting it to do a bit more- more spaces for the pegs or being able to stack colors. The novelty of the lit screws may lose their appeal to an older child more quickly- but this is going strong in our house and has been a great therapy tool as well!

This was tested by my 4.5 yr old daughter. She loved it for the drill because she loves working with her dad in the shop and using his tools. She was able to follow the guides with some assistance from me or her older brothers. She played with it for about an hour the first go around, but has only played with it a couple times since. I thought the drill was a bit large for the hands of a 3+ yr old and somewhat underpowered - you could almost put the bolts in by hand just as fast. If used that way, it would be a great toy to help children with hand strengthening. We're not a big family on battery operated toys, so I don't think I would have bought this on our own.

Comments about Educational Insights Design and Drill Brightworks Set:

My son played with this a lot when he received it. I love that it has a lot of the same capabilities as a "real" drill (you can change it to go front or reverse and there are two different bits that can be swapped out) and its pretty cool when it lights up (like us 80s kids and our light brights). I think I might have had more fun practicing my drilling skills as my 3.5 year old son.

I'm only giving it 4stars because we've had it for a few weeks and he seems to have gotten bored of it already. I hope to bring this out more to help show my son all the creative capabilities this has. I think he can eventually fall in love with this.

The Design & Drill BrightWorks is a wonderful product for my 3 and 6 year old. They are fascinated by building and putting it in the dark to watch it light up (the colors are very bright, which they love). Great educational tool that brings out their creativity for designing patterns and more. The tools are perfectly sized for little hands. Very creative toy!

We got this toy for my 4 year old son, and he really enjoyed making designs - both his own and the patterns that came with it. Our 5 (almost 6) year old neighbor also liked playing with it. And my 1.5 year old daughter loves playing with the drill. So all in all a great product that will last a long time in our household.

My daughter received this toy for free to review. She is not quite three years old and loves to help her very handy dad with tasks around the house. This toy made her day to have her own "power tool" that actually worked (and didn't just make noise). She got the hang of putting the screws in and out of the board very quickly. The toy reminded me of "Light Bright." What I wish (as a parent) was that there was a sheet you could put over the board to show which colors to put where to make the various designs. There is no way she'd have the patience to look at the little booklet to make the designs. She has enjoyed showing this to her friends and teaching them how to use the drill. I would definitely get this toy as a present for a child!

Comments about Educational Insights Design and Drill Brightworks Set:

The concept is great, and I chose this toy because it reminded me of the awesome Light Bright I used to have when I was a kid. The plus is that the screws aren't as small as the Light Brights, which is great if you have babies roaming around the house. Less of a choking hazard. And it requires using a drill and have the option of 2 different drill bits, which makes kids think a bit more when playing with this toy. The quality of the drill is great - very sturdy and attractive - and the screws are brightly colored and durable. However, the light box felt flimsy and it barely lit up the screws. Even in a nearly dark room, you could hardly tell that the light box was on. And when we accidentally left it on for an hour, the battery was almost used up. I feel like maybe ours was defective? Otherwise, it's a cool product that really promotes fine motor skills and creativity.

Comments about Educational Insights Design and Drill Brightworks Set:

The Design and Drill kit is actually 2 different toys in one. You get the colored board with screws and then you have the drill. At least that's how my 3.5 year old views it. We had the opportunity to review this, and I was super excited to see what my daughter would do.

For the first few minutes she had a blast using the drill to screw in the nuts. Then she discovered should could actually use her hands to get the nuts in faster than the drill, and that's when it became 2 separate toys.

I'm glad that there was a booklet included with designs because my daughter loves those things. With various lego kits she would always want to try to build the things featured in the books. At only 3.5 this was the first time she could actually follow the patterns she saw in the booklet and recreate them on the board by herself. She would sit there counting how many green screws and how many holes from the edge she would need to put it in. Put a huge smile on my face to see her doing it on her own, and makes the entire thing well worth it. Once she's done she'd turn it on and have it all light up and proudly show me the "rocket ship" or "smiley" she copied out of the book.

Then she would play with the drill separately, no matter how much coaxing I would to get her to use it for the screws, she'd simply insist on using her fingers, but that's fine, either way she's having fun, learning, and exercising her creativity.

One little caveat, if you use eneloop pro rechargeable batteries (I have a lot of these on hand for all her toys), they are an extremely tight fit in the drill, so much so that I can't even extract them without prying them out with a screw driver. Even normal Duracell batteries are pretty tight.

My husband is very handy and loves his tools, so I am always looking for toys that let our 2 year old play and model his work. We were given this toy in exchange for this review and I wasn't convinced that the drill would be simple enough for her little hands, but she picked it up very quickly and had fun at her grandma's all weekend drilling the screws and everything else she could find in grandpa's shop. I think as she gets older, this will have a second life as she gets interested in the patterns included in the instruction booklet and then creating her own. Fun toy!

My kids are not allowed to watch t.v. on a weekday so they play with toys. This toy has been their favorite since we got it. It's hard to find my son and daughter toys that they both can play with but I am happy to say they BOTH enjoy this. I love watching my kids work together and seeing their faces after they finish. I am a happy mama and I will definitely recommend this.
