Building a massive technic model isn't always fun, I mean, pushing a cross axel through multiple technic beams isn't all that fun and sometimes they're not properly aligned so you end up either having blisters or leaving a mark on your table. That said, this was a very different experience and the end result is worth the blisters. The first thing different is the presentation. The box is very different to previous branded "technic" sets, like the 8145 in 2007 (Ferrari 599 GTB) or the 8461 from 2002 (BMW-Williams FW24 F1), in that the Porsche 911 GT3 RS has artwork inside the box that shows the 911's evolution, and instead of just having a bunch of plastic bags, the plastic bags are split into different smaller boxes. So you open the box and you see 5 other boxes and the instruction manual that is high quality, 500 pages thick, and looks great on your coffee table (I had hoped the LEGO would make the instruction manual a hardcover but this will do). The box on the right side houses the exclusive GT3 RS wheels. Underneath the instruction manual is box #1, which has a picture of an engine on it; box #2 has a picture of a racing bucket seat; box #3 has a picture of the hood/bonnet; box #4 has a picture of the rear wing/spoiler. But that's not all, the whole building process has been modelled after the Porsche assembly line, so you start with the chassis, engine, gearbox, which is in box #1, then you move onto the interior and roll cage, then the body panels and the wheels. While you build, you can read on the development and building process of the real life GT3 RS. Apart from the above, this is like any other technic set, but if you love cars and or lego, this is a must have experience. I won't recommend any other sets because nothing else in the current LEGO lineup comes close. I would have given it 5 stars for play experience except I got blisters and this isn't really a set you harvest parts from.

This is a challenging build, and I enjoyed the build and the special packaging - the packaging is amazing in of itself and I don't want to throw it away. The build instruction book is also amazing and should be displayed with the model. However, there are features in this build that I'm sure someone spent a lot of time designing but have been buried. The double-clutch, trigger-controlled transmission and the entire working drivetrain end up completely concealed. The build should have included one or more electric motors, a battery pack and an IR controller like I've seen on YouTube so that the builder can show off the complex drivetrain and drive the model around. I'll go buy the additional parts so that I can show off the model's hidden features. I'm also a bit turned off by the "gappy" body design. It's as if the chassis out-grew the Lego body design, leading to unsightly gaps all over. There are holes outboard of the tail lights that should have been covered or filled. I have all three 10th scale Ferraris, and their Lego body designs are more continuous and attractive than this model.

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

My first lego set back in 1981 was a technic car, so technic sets are my fiest lego love.. and i have quiet a few sets now..!! This one is fantastic, and an absolute blast to build, and the finished product..WOW.. The only complaint i would have is that i wish the bags were numbered more extensively to make the build faster, however its a small grumble.. the detailing and size on this model is amazing.. it wont disappoint

Amazing what you can do with Lego. I built it RHD

By Erny72

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

I received the 911 GT3 RS as a Christmas present from my brilliant family. I haven't built any lego technic since I was about 12, so I took the (long) time to read the instructo-pedia, which is quite some tome. I couldn't find any youtube videos explaining how to make it RHD so I figured out some reversal steps while reading/planning. Despite the detail and the sheer scope of the build, the steps in the instructions are all fairly detailed so It goes together easily (even when reversing the steering and linkage from the flappy-paddles to the sequential gearbox). The only problem I had was the result of putting the wrong girders into the guts of the gear box and then realising (much) later that they belonged in the suspension and having to retrieve them. My only gripes are that if the instructions are followed to the letter the gearbox isn't sequential, which I found out online while looking for RHD instructions, and that that having assembled a detailed chassis with so many working components, it ends up entirely hidden from view behind the body panels and cargo shelf. Even after omitting a few of the retaining pins that fix the body to the chassis and modifying the fixing under the seats to make withdrawing the black pins easier, removing the body will still involve pulling the door hinges apart (although A relatively small modification to the pins should make them easier to remove once a couple of parts are ordered). I reckon this lego set is the duck's guts. Any one who likes lego and/or Porsche is definately going to enjoy building this kit. You'll also need to pause a few days before the 'mating' step so you can fiddle with the transmission to see how it all works.

A good build but one serious flaw

By jc2xs

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

Overall I enjoyed this build and it will make a good display piece. But one complaint about the higher end lego sets is still present in this one. STICKERS! They really do take away from the quality and look of the build. It would be so much better if the logos and other art work were printed on the bricks.

Well done Lego

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

This kit is just flat out great. The building experience is second to none from any other kit and I've been building with Legos for 20 plus years. The cars looks better in person than in the photos. A couple things I thought I didn't like were the seats, and the intake manifold but actually were nice pieces. If I had to pick somethings I wish were done differently they would be more rounded brake calipers, flip the winglets upside-down and a second 2x4 flat tile to display the other dash "display" sticker. All in all I am very pleased with this kit and I'm considering purchasing a second one to collect. Cheers and happy building

First the bad,,,,its expensive,,,the end,,, Now the good,,,,this set oozes class right from the of,,,,the gorgeous packaging, the way its all laid out in the box,the manual,,,,it almost makes you treat it with some reverence,!! You want to build it slowly and savour the experience,,,I was gutted when I finished it,but at the same time awestruck at how gorgeous the finished kit is,,,,I could write pages,,,,so,,,,ignore the price and buy it,,,and enjoy,,,
