Building a massive technic model isn't always fun, I mean, pushing a cross axel through multiple technic beams isn't all that fun and sometimes they're not properly aligned so you end up either having blisters or leaving a mark on your table. That said, this was a very different experience and the end result is worth the blisters. The first thing different is the presentation. The box is very different to previous branded "technic" sets, like the 8145 in 2007 (Ferrari 599 GTB) or the 8461 from 2002 (BMW-Williams FW24 F1), in that the Porsche 911 GT3 RS has artwork inside the box that shows the 911's evolution, and instead of just having a bunch of plastic bags, the plastic bags are split into different smaller boxes. So you open the box and you see 5 other boxes and the instruction manual that is high quality, 500 pages thick, and looks great on your coffee table (I had hoped the LEGO would make the instruction manual a hardcover but this will do). The box on the right side houses the exclusive GT3 RS wheels. Underneath the instruction manual is box #1, which has a picture of an engine on it; box #2 has a picture of a racing bucket seat; box #3 has a picture of the hood/bonnet; box #4 has a picture of the rear wing/spoiler. But that's not all, the whole building process has been modelled after the Porsche assembly line, so you start with the chassis, engine, gearbox, which is in box #1, then you move onto the interior and roll cage, then the body panels and the wheels. While you build, you can read on the development and building process of the real life GT3 RS. Apart from the above, this is like any other technic set, but if you love cars and or lego, this is a must have experience. I won't recommend any other sets because nothing else in the current LEGO lineup comes close. I would have given it 5 stars for play experience except I got blisters and this isn't really a set you harvest parts from.

This is a really nice set, but has a vew caveats that let it down. The Good: A very large scale Porsche model. Good detail, box, instructions all very nice. The Bad: It has very limited functionality, the paddle shift doesn't work properly, the gearbox doesn't work properly unlike the 8448. Book should have been hard backed so could actually be a coffee table book. It's orange which almost no Porsche is, only the GT3, and it doesn't have the stickers down the side to match. For the price, this isn't worth it unless you are an avid Porsche collector.

18 year old collected all his birthday and holiday gift money and bought this. LOVED putting this together! It took about 8-9 hours and he just wouldn't put it down until he was done! Looks great and moves well, too! Highly recommend even with high price tag!!!

Excellent!

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

I've built many Technic sets but this is possibly the best. The build was quite challenging as it's easy to make mistakes that can be tricky to fix later in the build. There were several parts that I had never come across before that made it interesting and the paddle shift is a great idea. I would have liked power functions for the price although the superb packaging just about makes up for it. Overall very enjoyable and highly recommended.

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

Bought this as a challenge having never built a project with this many bits in already have the mini the Ferrari f40 wv camper and beetle also the millennium falcon which I found all to easy but enjoyable. So now have this to my collection. Would be better with power function and remote as extra challenge .thought this could be a bit more challenging but really enjoyed it and the whole book as a good read

Great build

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

Really enjoyed this was also my first technics build. Really big and demands alot of attention just buy being im view. There seemed to be a piece missing but it was a different colour. It took the most timw to find the correct piece. One gripe was the way the instructions was layed out it was left to right all the way through then when i reached the body it just went strange. Other than that great fun.

Worth the money!

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

I can't believe how much detail and effort the lego designers put in this set, taking three years to develop! I had such an amazing experience putting the 4 speed transmission together, then continuing with the interior, after the body work of the Porsche. You get an code ingraved in a 1 X 4 white tile that give you special access to a certificate and pictures. Without any mortors or anything in the way, they could've add HOG steering as a option to the builder but, I really wish they could've make this an RC because there is plenty room to add a servo and a XL mortor. I'm still completely satisfied with the product although it lacks some features it should've had!

Great build, the paddle shifting was genuinely new

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

I typically buy all the new Technic sets and finally got around to this set. Physically, it's only a bit larger than the 24 Hour Race Car (https://shop.lego.com/en-US/24-Hours-Race-Car-42039) which, don't get me wrong, is a great value set. But the level of detail in this set is significant in that there's more than twice the number of pieces for approximately the same size. But most importantly, this set introduces two really cool concepts that I had personally never had the fun to experience. First, it has a shifter in the center (like most cars) but only has forward, neutral, and reverse. The mechanism for switching between forward and reverse was pretty satisfying. But far more interesting was the paddle shifter, which, each time its depressed, increments or decrements the gear ratio a quarter-turn at a time. In fact, even after building it, I'm still not sure how it works. :) I'm going to have to disasssemble it and rebuild it to fully appreciate the mechanic. In the end, it's a gorgeous model, and the level of curvaceous detail is impressive for a lego set. End-to-end a really enjoyable build and I highly recommend it to any fan of the Technic theme.

Great set! A "build experience" not to be missed!

By WindnuLL

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

This is like no other Technic LEGO set that I've seen in terms of the model itself, instruction book, and packaging (wow, yes, even the packaging deserves special mention)! I love it! The instruction book starts with about 40 pages detailing some of Porsche's history, the collaboration between LEGO and Porsche on this model, and the philosophy and thoughts behind the both the real car and the LEGO model. It's wonderful. Just to give some idea of the thought and design that went in to this set, consider this... There are about 2700 parts in a real Porsche GT3 RS, and this model contains 2704 pieces. I don't think that's a coincidence at all... this set feels that polished. It's a true model of the car, and is wonderfully accurate. The flat 6 "boxer" engine over the rear axel, the paddle shifting "PDK" transmission, etc, are all there. Another reviewer felt that not being able to see the operation of the transmission and engine are a negative thing about this LEGO model. I think they missed the broader experience to take away from building this Porsche 911. The VP of GT cars at Porsche has a great quote in the instruction book that sums everything up nicely: "It is great to experience the level of detail and all the working parts in the model. The functioning PDK gear is especially impressive. And I like that everything is there, event if it is eventually hidden away - just like in the real car. At Porsche, a car is not just a car: it's all about the design, the performance, the sense of detail and, not least, the passion and dedication. I really feel that these things are here when you look at the LEGO model." That, my fellow LEGO friends, should be the real take-away from this set. I've built a couple hundred sets over the last 30+ years, but enjoyed this one the most.
