Building a massive technic model isn't always fun, I mean, pushing a cross axel through multiple technic beams isn't all that fun and sometimes they're not properly aligned so you end up either having blisters or leaving a mark on your table. That said, this was a very different experience and the end result is worth the blisters. The first thing different is the presentation. The box is very different to previous branded "technic" sets, like the 8145 in 2007 (Ferrari 599 GTB) or the 8461 from 2002 (BMW-Williams FW24 F1), in that the Porsche 911 GT3 RS has artwork inside the box that shows the 911's evolution, and instead of just having a bunch of plastic bags, the plastic bags are split into different smaller boxes. So you open the box and you see 5 other boxes and the instruction manual that is high quality, 500 pages thick, and looks great on your coffee table (I had hoped the LEGO would make the instruction manual a hardcover but this will do). The box on the right side houses the exclusive GT3 RS wheels. Underneath the instruction manual is box #1, which has a picture of an engine on it; box #2 has a picture of a racing bucket seat; box #3 has a picture of the hood/bonnet; box #4 has a picture of the rear wing/spoiler. But that's not all, the whole building process has been modelled after the Porsche assembly line, so you start with the chassis, engine, gearbox, which is in box #1, then you move onto the interior and roll cage, then the body panels and the wheels. While you build, you can read on the development and building process of the real life GT3 RS. Apart from the above, this is like any other technic set, but if you love cars and or lego, this is a must have experience. I won't recommend any other sets because nothing else in the current LEGO lineup comes close. I would have given it 5 stars for play experience except I got blisters and this isn't really a set you harvest parts from.

This is a really nice set, but has a vew caveats that let it down. The Good: A very large scale Porsche model. Good detail, box, instructions all very nice. The Bad: It has very limited functionality, the paddle shift doesn't work properly, the gearbox doesn't work properly unlike the 8448. Book should have been hard backed so could actually be a coffee table book. It's orange which almost no Porsche is, only the GT3, and it doesn't have the stickers down the side to match. For the price, this isn't worth it unless you are an avid Porsche collector.

VRROOOOMM!!!

By Cwiti

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. I pretty much summed it up right there but if you want more, look down below. First of all it looks great. Almost exactly to scale. The attention to detail is exceptional and it has pride of place in my bedroom (full of more Lego). I love the gearbox, even if the change sequence is wrong. Even this though can be solved easily if you want, like I did. The engine works but you can't see much of it which is a little annoying. Overall, I love it. It may be a bit expensive but it is worth it.

Awesome.

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

This is my first Lego Technic and the most challenging set compared to the other 3,000-5,000 piece Lego sculptures that I've owned. Nice look. Stylish color. The front wheels turn by turning the steering wheel. You can't go wrong building this model. It's a must have. Definitely worth buying.

Possibly the most enjoyable set I've built

By JayByrne

from Dublin

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

Brilliant set, had a great time assembling it. Highly recommended. I have most UCS Star Wars, the Tumbler, all Modular and large creator (Big Ben, Tower Bridge, Sydney Opera House etc) but this was my first TECHNIC and I absolutely loved it. The car is amazing, although there could be less gaps (ie. less gap at side of bonnet and rear quarter panel over the taillights. Just one complaint - either LEGO has a mistake in the manual or they left me short a piece. Page 135 step 180. Piece 6135085, is it suppose to be orange? I was missing this piece at the end for (Page 548 step 819), but had a spare in black. Went back and put the spare black in for step 180, and used the orange for step 819. It was incredibly annoying.

An amazing model with a few quirks

By DHK99

from Undisclosed

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

I have now put two of these together, just to check out some options. The gearing can be modified to conform to the actual Porsche ratios, but this is not critical since the model isn't powered. The steering is a bit tricky so it's a good idea to check out that the steering wheel actually controls the front wheels as construction proceeds. The gear shift (D-N-R) is supposed to control whether the model can move forward or backward but this does not appear to be true, unless I messed up somewhere. Otherwise, this is a challenging kit to build and is clearly not the kit to start out with. It does look a trifle weird with all the gaps, but it a fascinating experience.

Good "display" model

By Taris

from Woodridge

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

Overall, as I've emphasized the "display", unlike other Technic models, 42056 isn't suitable for 'mechanical' people. Although the paddle shifter transmission is the most complex transmission from stock LEGO, their operation isn't visible once you finish the model. Also, the engine room view is limited and you won't exactly see how the H-6 engine operates. (note that real Porshce is Boxer... not H-6..) In terms of playablity, the steering has too much backlash (almost similar to the 42054 tractor) and lack of hand of god (steering knob) makes it hard to play with. Suspension is not too bad but you can find similar suspension in 42039 which is almost 1/3 price. Possibly, we can at least install XL motor (indicated in one of pictures) to see how the paddle shifter changes the wheel speed although a single XL motor at the location won't be able to provide enough propulsion to move the entire model, anyway. However, the model itself has fantastic shape when finished and almost anyone can recognize the Porsche. In other words, it's much functional and larger than most diecast models. The "Presence" is the key!! (IMO, the presence is better than 42055!! really!!) Assembly itself is not hard at all. In fact, if you get through the box 1 perfectly, hardship is completely over. Box 2, 3, and 4 are just panels and interior decoration. At least the box 1 was fantastic to build... The brake pads were kind of bummer, though... As you may already know, the instruction actually leads you to skew paddle shifter sequence. It becomes 1->3->2->4 if you follow the instruction. In fact, LEGO intentionally designed this way to avoid mechanical backlash and gear grinding... We can make the sequence correctly but the transmission gear grinds (especially on lower gear) a lot. Again, if you want a Technic brand, DISPLAY model, this is the best one you can get. But if you want anything actually operates, it's better to get 42039 + gear parts for transmission + PF parts(with IR controller set). Making 42056 reasonably fast RC with transmission would be a nice challenge for me though.

First Technic Set

By KIJohn

from Kelleys Island

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

This is the first Technic set we have built. I thoroughly enjoyed building this set. We built it over 4 days but I took the photos each time I started and finished a section so I gave actual build time when I started the review. We are also working on the Disney Castle right now. My kid enjoys the regular legos over the Technic. No interest in this one. I enjoyed it though. I would definitely build another if I found one I really wanted. We don't have play experience with any legos. We build them and display them as a hobby and quality time with each other. TV is off, no electronics and we build and talk. It gets to be an expensive hobby but well worth it.

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

This Porsche is something else. the packaging and entire experience is something else!!!! 9/10. The only thing I would change is the colour and the fact the gears are assembled and operate in the incorrect order.

Hidden Treasures

By Intheshopp

from Undisclosed

Comments about LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS (42056):

Out of the dozens of sets I've bought and assembled, this one was unique. It features some truly incredible new functions in this model, like the paddle shifting. The flat engine is really impressive too. The steering works as you would expect, and there's even a forward/reverse shift lever. Also a first for Lego builders is the serial number (VIN) located inside the glove box. My lower rating is because of this: Most of these features are hidden. You can't see the pistons move when you push the car or turn the rear wheels. And the car's best new design, the paddle shifters next to the steering wheels, changing the gears in the transmission, can't really be seen. You can change gears by pushing on the two paddles, but because the engine is hidden, even after opening the hood, you can't see the effect the changes make. This is a really big model, and heavy, and a true beauty. I love this set, don't get me wrong, I'm just disappointed that some of the best things to come along in a Lego model are hard or not able to be seen at all.
