frequently asked questions

Q: What are The Great Trade-In Events?
A: These are national, in-store events that provide you the opportunity within the event time period to trade in your old, outdated, outgrown or unused qualifying items in exchange for savings when you purchase a new selected item. In past events, these items have included car seats, strollers, travel systems, high chairs, play yards, bassinets, infant swings, bouncers, walkers, entertainers, cribs and toddler/twin beds.

Q: Why trade in an item?
A: Our Great Trade-In Events help remove unsafe or worn baby items from circulation. Included are items that have been damaged or where advances in that product’s safety standards have been made. This is also a perfect time to trade in items your child may have outgrown. In exchange for your trade in, we’re glad to offer you some great savings towards purchasing a new qualifying item.

Q: Does the item I trade in have to have been purchased from one of your stores? Do I need a receipt to trade in an item?
A: No. You can trade in any qualifying item at any of our Toys“R”Us or Babies“R”Us stores nationwide, regardless of where you purchased it. You do not need a receipt to trade in a used item.

Q: Can I bring in multiple qualifying items and receive additional savings?
A: Yes, you can trade in multiple qualifying items to our stores during the program. You’ll receive one discount coupon for each item traded in. You may only use one coupon per each new qualifying item purchased; coupons may not be stacked.

Q: Do I have to buy the same kind of item I traded in? (e.g., a car seat for a car seat, etc.)
A: No. You can trade in your used qualifying item for any new qualifying item.

Q: Why is it important to register my new purchase?
A: Registering your new purchase is the best way to learn about safety recalls quickly and reliably. Be sure to complete and mail the registration card that comes with your new baby item purchase or follow instructions on the card for online registration.

Q: What if I don’t have anything to trade in?
A: If you don’t have a used item to trade in, you can still take advantage of a 15% off coupon. You’ll find it in the Great Trade-In Event catalog available during the time of the event. This coupon can be applied to a qualifying in-store purchase.

Q: Why is it important to dispose of old or secondhand car seats if they still look fine?
A: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), these car seats may look fine, but if labels or parts are missing, or if the seat is past the manufacturer’s expiration date, its safety could be compromised. NHTSA also recommends replacing car seats after any vehicle accident.

Q: Are car seat bases included as a qualifying trade-in item?
A: No. Car seat bases are not included as a qualifying trade-in item.

Q: Do car seats expire? Are there any car seat expiration guidelines?
A: Yes, car seats do expire. You can check your car seat owner’s manual or manufacturer’s label to find the expiration date. Expiration dates may vary among car seat models and manufacturers.

Q: When is it time to change to a new car seat?
A: It’s time for a new car seat when:

  • Your child’s height/weight is not within the manufacturer’s recommended limits for the car seat
  • The car seat has met or exceeded the expiration date noted on the manufacturer’s label
  • The car seat was in a vehicle involved in an accident
  • The manufacturer’s label is missing. This shows the name of the manufacturer, the date the item was made and model number—needed for safety recalls!

Q: Are there child car seat guidelines? How about booster seat requirements?
A: Yes to both. Car seat guidelines differ by state. You can check your state’s guidelines at NHTSA’s safercar.gov. Car seat guidelines/booster seat requirements are usually based on your child’s weight and approximate age. Remember, it’s safest for your child to ride rear-facing until at least 2 years of age.

  • Infant car seats - Newborn - 2 yrs./30+ lbs.
  • All-in-one car seats - Newborn - 12 yrs./120 lbs.
  • Convertible car seats - Newborn - 6 yrs./65 lbs.
  • Booster car seats - 6 - 12 yrs./120 lbs.

Q: What happens to the items that are traded in?
A: Items brought to our stores will be disposed of properly so they can’t be put back into circulation.
We consulted with top safety organizations and they agreed that disposal of used or worn baby items is necessary.

Q: When is the next Great Trade-In Event?
