A great purchase to inspire budding young scientists!
A few years ago, I bought a different brand of "child" microscope, and it turned out to be WAY too complex--both in terms of assembly and use. Not the case with this product. Assembly is literally as simple as inserting batteries, and my three-year-old was INDEPENDENTLY having a blast in no time. She's examined leaves, coins--even Barbie shoes! Plus, my six year old didn't consider it too babyish to try out, which is a definite plus when you're hoping to get the best use out of a toy and/or educational product in a large family. All in all, this is a great way to get kids interested in science from an early age!

Great product; not sure about magnification
My son loves the idea of this microscope and is always keen to have a look through it but he gets bored quite quickly because, and this may just be a problem with my particular example, the magnification is rather disappointing. In no circumstances is it anything approaching 8x. It seems more like 1.5x - that is, something that is about an inch across will appear under the microscope to be about 1.5 inches. I don't think there's anything I've missed operationally to increase the magnification; it's just rather underwhelming. But the absence of any similar comments here leads me to believe that it's a problem with my item. I would recommend it to a friend, with this caveat.

Very sturdy
We were given this toy to review, I originally assumed our toddler would get the most mileage out of it but it turns out the second grader did. He has a "real" microscope but has trouble with the knobs and is not allowed to take it outside for obvious reasons. He loved that this could go outside and was sturdy. The magnification isn't as high as a traditional one of course, but that was more than made up for in him spending a couple hours outside looking for anything he could find to put under it and look at more closely. He's been dragging it around every time he goes out to play now, and we all know what a beetle and every the leaves from every plant we have look like up closer. :)

Great for introduction to science and discovery!
A perfect toy for a 3 or 4-year-old! My daughter had a blast finding tons of stuff around our house and our backyard and then looking at it "up close." She especially loved when she realized that the smaller the item was, the more fun it was to look at under the microscope. Great opportunity for discovery and curiosity. (For what it's worth, my 1 1/2 year old also is obsessed with turning the light on and off on the microscope and trying to "peek" under it... he loves it so much that my daughter wanted to know why there weren't two microscopes in the box, so they could both have one.)

Its a whole new world under that lens!
I quite like this microscope, its designed and built with round edges, big buttons and knobs, doesn't skid when my preschooler handles it! It has large eye pieces so one's not squinting to look through and the light helps to show the object ever more clearly. Magnification is not too bad, especially for things they love to have a closer look at grass blades, coins, stamps, stickers, lego mini figures, worms, you name it! I always wish these toys came with batteries - so make sure you have 3 AAA, will highly recommend it for little discoverers :)

Low Magnification, High fun
I was very excited to see a child's microscope for one as young as my daughter. It is well constructed (She has been carrying it all over the house) and she got the hang of operating in within minutes. I am not overly impressed with the magnification; 8x doesn't highlight much more detail than I see with my eyes. I have been looking for more interesting things to put under there (so far the penny is the most exciting) and that might help. The target audience, my daughter, doesn't seem to mind the lack of power. She spent quite a bit of time looking at any toy she could fit under it. To see how excited she is looking though the little scope thrilled me and so I have to say, very good toy.

Sturdy and Toddler-friendly
We received this toy in exchange for our opinion and review, but I would have purchased it regardless. My two year old daughter has already been all around the living room finding decorative sticks and acorns to "check out" under the microscope, and has plans to bring it to the backyard after her nap. I wasn't sure that she would understand how to look through the two lenses, but it was very intuitive and she picked it up almost immediately. The orange knobs that control the distance of the microscope from the object are very toddler-friendly, as she can continue to turn the knob past it's stopping point and it just clicks (which she thinks is fun), without showing any sign of breaking. This toy is very well-designed and will continue to be fun as she gets older.

Great easy entry into the world of science!
Our preschooler absolutely loves this microscope. It works and is really easy to use, right out of the box. I love that the batteries are not only included but already pre-installed. I'd worried that it may be too advanced for our daughter since she's only two and a half but after showing her how to turn the dials only a few times, she can do it all by herself. She loves putting her favorite toys under the viewer to see them close up, and I have a feeling that this is a toy that will remain fun and relevant to her as she grows. I'll definitely check out the prepared slides next as I think those will be a really cool way for her to understand even better the power of magnification and microscopes. Overall, great toy, and wonderful entry into the magic of science!
