Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor mechanics Along with other reviewers, we also have had a very frustrating experience with this set. The throne room consistently comes off anytime we try to rotate it. at first I thought it was because my son made some mistakes in building it so I finally took the entire throne apart and rebuilt it, only to have it to the same results. I tried modifying with a different part in the rotating mechanism, and then it starting popping off in other places. Out of the countless Lego sets we have, this is the first that just doesn’t seem to work, which would probably bother me less if it wasn’t one of the most expensive sets I’ve ever bought. Seriously, unless you will be happy with the throne piece not working at all, I don’t recommend buying this one.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great idea, bad throne room The build itself was fun, and my son was happy to have another Bowser and to get Ludwig. The front part of the castle is nice and fun to play with, however my son has trouble with the throne room. It seems barely held together and the twisting action always seems to screw up or get stuck and then comes apart which leads to me having to pull it apart and reassemble the gear as well as try to get the throne room to balance back on the gears. That connection seems extraordinarily flimsy being mostly held together by a single block on the bottom and two thin blocks on the top. Not a fan of how the throne area is designed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Another review about the mechanism I hate to review any LEGO product poorly. My kids are second generation builders and inherited many of my own sets and bricks from 30 or more years ago. What I’m saying is we are devotees in this house. That all said, the throne room swivel mechanism in this build is *awful*. It’s not nearly secure enough for the weight of the moving parts vs the gear they rest on. Even the plates that swing to the sides as the throne swivels do not really stay in their track. The gimmick is a good effort, but it’s poorly designed and really brings the rest of the build down with its fragility.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Digital-only Instructions make this a bore This set is ok, but it's pricy and uninteresting to build. I get that this is for kids an assumes you'll have the lego app to use with interactive Mario... but taking what would be a nice escape from all of the other screen-based activities in life, this and the rest of the Mario line only offers app-based instructions. Those instructions are also very slow and geared toward small children, with only 1 or 2 pieces per step, animated like a toddler cartoon. When you have a larger set like this one, it just becomes tedious. I would have hoped Lego would have changed this for the newest Donkey Kong sets, but they haven't. It's a real shame.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fixed the mechanism! As many other reviews stated, the rotating mechanism is awful on this build. I kept trying to go back and see if I did something wrong. After a lot time reassembling and troubleshooting based on the instructions, and getting very frustrated to find the problem never got better, I started trying to figure out my own way to fix it. I ended up adding 3 pieces to the bottom of the purple square piece that the throne part rests on, and it seems to have fixed the issue! In fact, it now runs so smoothly and neatly and fits better into the space, that I can’t believe this isn’t how it was meant to be built in the first place. It has not come off track since making this adjustment. I am attaching pictures in hopes I can help some others have a better experience with this build! As a fan of Mario and LEGO I think this is a fun set, but I was extremely frustrated and disappointed considering what was paid for this set to encounter this kind of problem, as it was also my first time investing so much into a set and I had really hesitated to do so in the first place. But I hope my pictures showing the added 3 pieces can help anyone else who has the extra pieces lying around!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fun figures, flimsy castle. Normally, Lego builds feel sturdy and won't fall apart if you play with them. The roofs of the castle are held on by just a single connection point made of a 2x1 plate, and they easily fall off even with very light movement or tapping. The figurines are wonderful as always, but the castle itself feels cheap.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Unstable Throne Room As other reviews have said, the mechanism that makes the throne room swivel is too flimsy for it to be properly executable. We built the castle to exact specifications, and made sure to fit the pieces on securely. It’s disingenuous of Lego to suggest that a known build issue could somehow be user error.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great build, figures, and Play! This set is outstanding! All the play functions and builds work perfectly, and it was fun to build, too. The design of this set is very remarkable, and I just love all the references to the games, Super Mario 64 being the most referenced to here. However, I was a bit disappointed to discover that it doesn't connect to the "Cat Peach Suit and Frozen Tower" set in any obvious way. Otherwise, this has to be my favorite Lego set in my collection!
